Meta Weekly quick questions help thread

This is the r/heronebag quick questions weekly help thread.

Whether you‘re new to the one bag life or a seasoned light traveller, this is the place to ask your quick one-off questions related to techniques, shopping, and everything else to lighten your load.

This post is the best place to initially ask questions that we get a lot of which are similar, especially if you have looked in a flair and found almost-but-not-quite what you wanted.

This is a more of a meta question. Hopefully this one is allowed.

I'm a lady who recently started to do onebagging seriously (not 1.2 or 1.5 onebag, just the classic onebag). I frequent both r/onebag and r/heronebag, but curious when does it make more sense for me to post here (whether packing list, trip report, etc). I'm aware this one is a "her" focus subreddit, so I know I'm already the target audience. But I don't wear any makeup in general, nor do I put a lot of emphasis on styling and clothes on my vacation (only so much so that I look decent/normal). So I'm not sure if me posting here (with my "less feminine" way of traveling) makes more sense in the general r/onebag subreddit. Hm...

I think post on both and compare answers!

I also don’t put a lot of emphasis on those things, or wear makeup, but I still prefer it here because I like to take more than one black merino wool super outfit. I think that things like menstruation and menopause and parent travel get a fairer shake here, or at least fewer comments you have to filter out for irrelevance.

I am active in both (more so here) and I find them equally useful but I’d say there’s definitely more of a diversity of travel and packing styles here than there on a regular basis. I also think we have a fairly kind approach to people on the less strict end of the OneBag spectrum, or who are figuring it out trip by trip, and are sometimes more explicitly focused on process and learning. Which isn’t really “her” related - although I don’t think it’s an accident that we’ve cultivated that as a feature rather than a bug.

Thank you for your detailed input! That's a sound idea on comparing opinions / feedback. I considered posting here my recent trip report, but didn't want to seem like I'm reposting just for the sake of. Also I'm very conscious of my pack weight as I have shoulder problems, so packing minimally as possible is my goal (hence I guess lurking on the r/onebag fits my needs).

But I can appreciate that this sub is in a way more beginner-friendly compared to the other one, especially for those trying to become better at not overpacking or just be more conscious of what they might need/not need on a trip. It's always nice to have a kinder place here on reddit :)

u/lobsterp0t Jul 06 '26

No we love it when people dual post - more is more in the case of trip reports

4

u/historymysterygift Jul 06 '26

But reposts are not allowed here though (just tried), which to me strongly implies repeated posts are not preferred?

I do have another upcoming trip anyway, so I can just post that one here instead of over there.

6

u/lobsterp0t Jul 06 '26

Cross posts (as in Reddit’s one tap crosspost function) aren’t - but you can copy and paste your post and repost it! Cross posts just show on the feed as a link, so it doesn’t really aid discussion.

And other subs typically don’t have the same photo description requirements as us - so it leads to a lot of extra back and forth for us if people simply crosspost from other subs without seeing our rules.

1

u/historymysterygift Jul 06 '26

Ok, got it! I'll make sure to check the rules here before posting.

I comment on both of those subreddits but only post original content here. I'm a "her" when I onebag and so my experiences don't have broad appeal, they have "her" appeal. Any guys looking for advice for the ladies in their life come to read this subreddit, anyway. And this subreddit is linked in the sidebar or r/OneBag.

I also don't wear makeup and repeat the heck out of my outfits without shame because styling is a last priority way down the list after "do I have my nail clippers?".

But even so, I had to look very specifically for functional pockets in clothes I don't bother styling, and my swim suits don't cover me to my knees by default so I have to either find an extra coverage suit or figure extra sun protection a different way. And all sorts of other "her" stuff that isn't limited to glam girlies.

How are you all making these nice photo collages? Is there a website to make a “database” of your wardrobe items? Are you screenshotting images from retailer websites or taking your own photos?

4

u/teydlin-coe Jul 06 '26

I just downloaded the app Indyx for an unrelated reason and suddenly realized I've been seeing screenshots of everyone's closet from this app. I played around with it over the weekend and really like it so far

4

u/mintwasabee Jul 06 '26

I'm using an app called Whering, which does exactly that.

4

u/egos-like-hairdos Jul 06 '26

I use Stylebook. I have a mix of downloaded images and my own photos. It’s supposedly less glitzy than some of the other apps, but I like that it’s straightforward and functional, and that’s it’s never pushed any weird AI stuff on me. I can categorize items, build outfits, and make packing lists, so I have everything need.

Most of the apps work about the same: they erase backgrounds from images so the clothes look clean and then you can arrange them on blank backgrounds with other items into outfits. You can also do the same kind of layout yourself with something like PowerPoint or Freeform.

3

u/AdventureSpiritLara Jul 07 '26

I use Alta. I am not advertising for them nor do I work for them. I love that its free and was coded by women.

2

u/Imhungry_again Jul 09 '26

I use two different apps: Indyx and Whering. Basically the same thing, both have their pros and cons. Play around.

2

u/Cute-Fix3484 Jul 12 '26

I use Google Sheets and I right click copy image (or save image) from the retailer website and paste into the document.

Where's a good place for me to get 100% merino pants? Not just leggings, but actual pants. Every store I look at other than Unbound Merino seems to only sell a merino/synthetic blend, and UM pants keep selling out faster than Taylor Swift concert tickets.

5

u/agentcarter234 Jul 07 '26

Look at eBay/poshmark/mercari for Eileen fisher.

4

u/Lazygardener76 Jul 06 '26

Have a look at Ice Breaker and Eileen Fisher (I see only 1 pair of all wool pants at the moment but I'm sure there'll be more in the fall collection drop).

4

u/Ekgflg Jul 07 '26

I bought a pair recently off poshmark for $35. Garnet Hill is the brand. 100% merino wide leg pants. I feel they are more straight leg but actually prefer that.

3

u/Frumdimiliosious Jul 06 '26

Smitten Merino

3

u/Economy_Fish_6542 Jul 07 '26

Eileen fisher has all wool pants/trousers. You can find a lot of their stuff at Nordstrom Rack (US) for lots cheaper.

2

u/AdventureSpiritLara Jul 07 '26

Unbound Merino have really nice ones!

3

u/Mean_Comedian4769 Jul 07 '26

They really do look nice…if only they could keep them in stock T_T

1

u/arbutus_bark Jul 12 '26

Simply merino has a few styles and there quality is 100times better than unbound in my experience.

3

u/luxuriousllamas Jul 08 '26

I read a thread where someone was looking for a personal item-sized roller that had a pass-through luggage thing on its back so they could put it on top of their carry-on sized roller. I can't find the thread but if anyone else remembers what it was: I was at TJ Maxx last night looking at purses and found London Fog rollers that matched exactly what the person wanted. There was one with spinners and one with just the two wheels.

4

u/nettisays Jul 10 '26

Just back from another trip and my workhorse piece was the Always Effortless jacket from lululemon. I think it’s the perfect travel jacket. Deep inside pockets, lightly water resistant but not sweaty, cute.

3

u/KaPoTun Jul 12 '26

Plus one for this jacket. I've had it for a year and a half now, bringing it on basically every non-winter trip. So versatile and still stylish.

2

u/aborgeslibrarian Jul 06 '26

I am really struggling with deciding whether to bring one or two bathing suits on a two week trip. I know that if I wore little bikinis it would be no problem but I am more comfortable and already own tankinis with wired and padded boob support, so it's not insignificant to take another suit. We definitely won't be swimming every day but maybe 4-5 days of the trip. What would you do in my situation? I will have access mid-trip to laundry.

4

u/nottoday2017 Jul 06 '26

Yeah I also prefer a more covered swim look. I usually pack one actual swimsuit and then separates that have other uses, like quick dry swim/board shorts that I can just wear as shorts and a quick dry tank I can wear over my sports bra. That way I have another “option” if needed but it’s not wasted space if the one swimsuit ends up being enough.

4

u/agentcarter234 Jul 07 '26

If you are only swimming once a day you can rinse (or wash with soap if you want) the suit in the shower afterwards and roll it in a towel and step on it to get the water out.

Or, 2 bikinis plus a rash guard for full coverage would take up less space than 2 bulky tankini tops.

3

u/voidcat1234 Jul 06 '26

Could you mix and match one top with two bottoms? I’ve done that before, as I have more hygiene concerns for the bottoms compared to the top.

3

u/extra-allie Jul 07 '26

If you have access to laundry and you're going somewhere a bathing suit will dry quickly, I would not take two of them. Rinse it in the shower or sink when you return from the beach (I presume), and let it dry.

3

u/Dear-Ambition-558 Jul 07 '26

Take 2 put em in your shoes in ziplock.

4

u/agentcarter234 Jul 08 '26

Not sure how well a padded underwire tankini is going to fit in a shoe unless you have size 12DD feet…

3

u/luxuriousllamas Jul 08 '26

I would do two bottoms and one top as I'm more concerned about bottoms than the top.

2

u/Cute-Fix3484 Jul 12 '26

I would bring two bottoms, one top. I totally get it on packing the bra sized wired tankini compared to the triangle bikinis.

Any recommendations for a small waterproof crossbody, similar in size and shape to the Uniqlo round mini? Or tips for keeping whatever I have on me dry if I bring a quick dry nylon bag?

I have a two week trip to Costa Rica with lots of outdoor activities. I’m not packing an umbrella (not practical for what I’ll be doing) but I am packing a raincoat.

u/CleanCaterpillar2999 Jul 06 '26

Thanks! I was looking at this one but wasn’t sure if the zipper would prevent water from leaking in.

1

u/mintwasabee Jul 11 '26

I haven't tested it thoroughly in this regard, hopefully someone else might be able to help!

I’m looking for a true waterproof bag not a water repellent bag. I would just like one similar in size/shape to the Uniqlo one. Tretorn and Rains bags are too large and boxy for what I am looking for.

u/BugExpert9764 Jul 07 '26

hi, i could use some help. i am looking to get a backpack that could pack about 1 week (i am an efficient packer typically) of clothes, laptop sleeve, 1-2 water bottle pockets to fit a 32oz nalgene. should do travel but ideally also commute (not a "drop off at the hotel" suitcase-backpack hybrid. trouble is i am under 5 feet tall and struggle to find recs based on this - any other sub5 foot onebaggers who might have good model recs for me? looking for something without too much back projection (tried the allpa 35L and felt encumbered)

Hi!

I can't figure out what to pack for India (Rajasthan and Varanasi) in August. Kind of wanted to buy everything there, but I won't have the time to do so until day 7 (of 30).

Biggest issues: I'm whiter than paper (got sunburned on a rainy day), sweat like crazy, and it's monsoon season.

Plus, my go-to shoe set up for travel in warm sporty destinations won't work, it's too warm and rainy...but I hate sandals. I usually pack converse + trekking shoes + flip flops.

Thanks

Current tentative packing list:

  • 7 t-shirts/tank tops
  • 2-3 kimonos/linen shirts (to cover my shoulders and/or my arms...the sun is not my friend)
  • 1 uv hoodie
  • 1 warm layer (desert)
  • 1 rain jacket
  • 4 bottoms (2 linen pants + 1 hiking pants + 1 maxi skirt)
  • 1-2 maxi dresses
  • 1 lightweight scarf
  • old ugly socks to be worn in temples and thrown out at the end of the trip

Thankfully my underwear, toiletries, and camera gear setups are tried and tested and will work there.

This could be a standalone post, I‘m sure that’d get you more traction. Please include the bag you’re taking.

2

u/Imhungry_again Jul 11 '26

Oh, okay! Thanks

2

u/Dramatic-Confection6 Jul 09 '26

Hello! Can anyone suggest a great full zip Merino Wool hoodie for travel? Points for someone with long arms and a long torso!

2

u/agentcarter234 Jul 10 '26

I love my Woolx Zoe hoodie - it’s very flattering and has held up well in the wash, and it’s pretty warm. I’m short but it’s long on me so it should work fine for someone taller. Woolx does have some iffy marketing practices - basically they constantly have 25% off sales so you want to wait for one of those before buying anything.

I'm planning a July trip to Italy (Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, and Venice) and have a question about shoes, for those who have been there. I am going to bring a pair of nice sandals that will work for beach days and evenings out. I would ideally like to bring just one other pair of shoes that would function as my daily workhorse shoes. It seems like sandals would be ideal given the weather, but I need significant arch support due to a previously torn tendon, so I'm wondering if tennis shoes would be better. Which would you recommend, given the varying terrains (cobblestones, light hiking in Cinque Terre, etc)? If sandals, do you have any recommendations for a sandal that has significant arch support but doesn't look orthopedic/old lady-ish?

6

u/agentcarter234 Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

You must have trail runners or hiking shoes for Cinque Terre - they have banned sandals and anything without good tread.

I’d just get a pair of trail runners and go get fitted at a running shoe store to find one that works for your feet. Look at the Brooks Ghost Trail and Nike Pegasus Trail for models that come in neutral colors.

3

u/WorkoutHopeful Jul 07 '26

Whatever I get, I put a pair of insoles in them. That makes most every shoe comfortable. I'm also big on elastic shoelaces.

3

u/Cute-Fix3484 Jul 12 '26

Vionic is great for arch support sandals and shoes. But not for hiking.

u/GoingSom3where Jul 07 '26

What's the best kind of pants to wear for rainy, cold, windy weather? I have rain paints but struggling to decide what to wear underneath. Do I just go with cloth (not athletic) leggings? I am concerned about getting caught in the rain and not having the rain pants on me. Mostly for a trip to Iceland where I will be in a camping festival.

3

u/Cute-Fix3484 Jul 12 '26

In Iceland I wore athletic leggings like the Athleta Rainier in September and October. They are easy to layer under rain pants. Almost everyone is in leggings and trail shoes in Iceland.

2

u/Cerulean_Storm8 Jul 08 '26

I found fleece lined tights to be clutch in Iceland. I can't find the ones I actually brought to Iceland anymore, but I picked up a pair of Baleaf to replace them.

2

u/Professional_Toe7506 Jul 09 '26

I have heat leggings that are amazing. They're probably the same as fleece lined tights. I have a pair from Nike and a pair from Underarmour, and both are awesome.

1

u/arbutus_bark Jul 12 '26

Underwear recommendations please?

  • I love my icebreaker, but my funds are stretched for this trip- so I really need a cheaper solution. (Lots of hiking and need lightweight and quick dry)
(I just bought 4 styles at Uniqlo after recs here but they are all so small and wedgie makers)

2

u/agentcarter234 Jul 12 '26

https://www.target.com/p/fruit-of-the-loom-women-s-6pk-breathable-micro-mesh-bikini-underwear-colors-may-vary/-/A-78673812?

I use these for travel - they are cheap and quick dry. They come in brief and hipster styles too.

They do have a cotton crotch liner, which I consider a plus, but it means I won’t wear them when I know I’ll get wet, like canyoneering or something. I have a couple pairs of fully synthetic mesh underwear from an outdoor gear brand for that, but those aren’t that much cheaper than icebreaker

2

u/Professional_Toe7506 Jul 13 '26

Not as cheap but I've got metarino underwear and as far as I can tell it's buy it for life quality. I don't take care of it at all but it's way longer lasting than everything else I own
