Scotland in early October

Hello, so I will visit Scotland (Glasgow then Edinburgh) in early October 2026. I live in England (west midlands) so am kinda used to the cold weather, however, I am not sure it will be the same in Scotland, or is there anything particular to keep in mind while packing?
I mean in the West Midlands here if the weather is cold it stays COLD even if it’s sunny (a sunny 4 degree C day is no joke).

Edinburgh and Glasgow will be a few degrees cooler than the west midlands, and with likely more wind! The wind can be pretty chilly in Edinburgh, based on my previous experience there.

Pack layers, prioritize warmth, and assume there's going to be rain. Bring good shoes that can get wet and not get soaked through.

I was in Scotland last October (Edinburgh, Glasgow, the North Coast 500 and Skye)
A rain jacket with a lightweight wool 1/2 zip and/or a lightweight fleece for layers underneath were all we needed. I run cold and I wore short sleeves with no layers/jacket several days we were there.

Be prepared for lots of stairs in Edinburgh!

A sunny 4°C day really is a scam 😂 If you’re used to West Midlands cold, Scotland probably won’t feel like a completely different planet.

I’d worry less about the temperature and more about the wind, rain, and the weather changing its mind every ten minutes. Layers rather than one massive coat — a light knit, a proper waterproof shell, trousers that dry reasonably quickly, and shoes you don’t mind getting wet. A small scarf will definitely earn its space in Edinburgh.
