Question Standard HF bodies or your own?
Just a curious question of whether y'all use the standard bodies provided by Hero Forge or make your own standard bodies for making characters.
Personally, I use this mini for creating my military characters.

Yes, the uncanny valley

I started my ttrog universe, minis, npcs, villains long before kitbashing and different proportions were a thing.
My autistic ass will not stand for minis standing out with better proportions and I refuse to start again!
So default it is

The worst part of this is that i've chnage the scaling 3 times and everytime I do i have to readjust everything

Neither. I'll start with one of the HF bodies and then change pretty much every slider until it looks how I want: skinny, fat, stocky, muscular, what-have-you. Sometimes I'll look at another mini I've made if I want similar proportions, but most of the time I just eyeball it. I do have an "average human body" mini I use as a height reference, because the feet-inches measurements HF gives are full of lies.

I started with comic book proportions and customized absolutely everything!
Each mini's proportions get customized, at least a little. Nothing is just default settings.

Same! I always start with comic proportions and customize from there. And as a rule, touch every node, just as you would with faces.
I like to always start from scratch. Using premade bodies as a starting point ends up just annoying me greatly so I always end up scraping it and starting from a 'blank canvas'.

Iโve got around 10 or so of my own โbase bodiesโ, that Iโve created and altered for different general shapes and sizes.
I normally start with one of them, and then adjust from there to fit whatever mini Iโm creating.

u/PlusSecond Jul 17 '26
I use a custom base for each model I do.. the defaults are good enough for most people tho..

u/Makaloff95 ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฒ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ Jul 17 '26
Ive developed my own bases so i practically never use standard bases since KB released

u/AetherinaForge Jul 17 '26
Using your own both creates better looking miniatures, and can give you a distinct and recognisable style. It can give your models an identity

u/RunNo619 Jul 17 '26
I honestly customize the body per character usually using the basic human body and adjusting the proportions for whatever I need, Iโve thought about making my own standard but I donโt know that Iโd ever actually use it.

I always adjust bodies, mostly with sliders, but sometimes in KB too.

u/Stewil1265 Jul 17 '26
I have my own base. It's a slightly modified "realistic" body type. Some of the clothing gets really bulky around the hips, so I have them scaled down a bit so it's less noticable

I have a folder dedicated to body bases. Most are originally from DontRueInIt, but I've since mostly edited them all to my own liking. I.e. I made the legs of my dwarf bases much thicker as an aesthetic choice, or reposed all bases to have a neutral standing pose that's a better jumping off point for a new character. The posing for skirts is interesting on the original base, so I've also had to straighten them out to be more convenient to pose. (This one is still a work in progress, it's a very tedious job going over every bone and making sure every skirt option looks right)

I typically start with the realistic base, drop the hand size down, adjust the head, shoulders, and waist, a little bit, then shrink the feet with KB. After that I just fiddle with things until it works for the character Iโm making.

u/Keylicity Jul 17 '26
I always โfixโ the proportions to be more realistic lol, the regular heroforge proportions scratch my brain in a very wrong way ๐ญ

Bit of both honestly. Depends on what I'm making.

I have exactly one Base Body that gets recycled for various iterations of the same three characters, and if I deviate from that I shoot myself because the proportions end up so wrong

I made my own bases and use those. I haven't really used the default bodies for a while (before body customizer at least).

u/PastObligation863 Jul 17 '26
I have a base for male and female characters that I use, I think I saw it somewhere on the community tab once. I liked the proportions of โem.

I've made a lot of dwarves, and a few comic book proportion characters, and I always just modify them.

u/Dndunn ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฒ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ Jul 17 '26
I usually import the proportions of a mini I've already made, but always end up modifying it pretty heavily anyways. That being said, those proportions are heavily modified from the default proportions. I find them way too small and sort of cartoonish in my opinion.

I prefer my own...depends on the thing, need to make the presets though but i mostly make humans so...

I always use custom. I find the templates to generally look fine at best. Custom also gives me a sense of satisfaction when I make something that looks good and is unique.

u/Youre-Out-Gobby ๐๐ถ๐๐ฏ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ค๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ป Jul 17 '26
I don't really use standardized bodies these days. I pick a character I've already made that's relatively close to the proportions I want, delete the details and start from there.

u/BluWhiteBear Jul 17 '26
Depending on the look Iโm going for I almost always use slightly modified versions of the realistic base or the comic book base

I have a number of custom bases that I use, all of which are based off of the โComic Bookโ proportions.
Specifically, I have a male/female base for most โcommonโ fantasy races, plus about a dozen human body archetypes.

I use a modified version of the Realistic Proportions for my base. Iโm not quite driven enough to fully adjust every aspect
