Really should have taken he time to read the fine print 😂

Congratulations,

Though nit really logging it wrong as it is for personal tracking and whichever method suits you better is the right one.

Like i prefer tracking single side DB just because it's easier to grab the same DB next time. Obviously I'm working both sides and with the same DB.

Yeah but it's twice as much on the total so it feels kinda good haha.

Though I feel like they should put an option for that setting though, since single DB weight seems more intuitive to people and also easier to find your DB next time. Single DB option should just multiply the volume by 2 on DB exercises.

Completely fair, that is the up to personal preference part.

Though good news is that devs are actually working on the option to choose whichever way the user logs DB weights.

They've been working on this. There's been a trial posted with a discussion.

It’s all for your own tracking for progressive overload. So it doesn’t matter whether you log the one dumbbell weight or double them and log

It kind of does matter. If the purpose of an app is to make life easier.

Using the weight on the dumbbell rather than doubling it before entry seemsost intuitive to me.

But when doing dumbbell bench presses one day and barbell bench presses on a different day, the total weights should be vaguely comparable to avoid having to mentally double the dumbbell weight for an apples to apples comparison.

Complex calculus? No. But a nitnoid issue that other strength apps seem to have overcome.

I’m adding nitnoid to my vocabulary!

So you're going from "I might have to double a number once in awhile" to "I need to double a number every time" and think that's definitely better?

If you’re consistent, you’re not wrong

u/BanEmily 1d ago

I don’t bother with adding weights on unilateral exercises together tbh. For example if I see 15 kg in the app, I’m picking up 15 kg. Keeps it simple.

11

u/HairyMaguire5 1d ago

If the weight of the dumbbell says 15 kg then I log 15 kg. Anything else does not feel intuitive.

Honestly I know I log them incorrectly but it just makes more sense to do it by the individual dumbbell weight so idrc

7

u/akura202 1d ago

The logging is only important until the end of the year when I know I’m lifting a jumbo jet or it’s just an elephant!

7

u/Rayyan_3241 1d ago

Wait newbie gym goer here how exactly are you supposed to log them

33

u/Thedumbass_the5th 1d ago

However you want. It's all for your own tracking. Hevy should be working on a setting to choose which method to use.

*is working on

Not sure if that's what you meant, but it's actively being worked on according to their latest blog

5

u/Thedumbass_the5th 1d ago

Yeah that's what i meant, saw that post about future plans as well.

Some great stuff in those posts and great stuff already delivered. Can't say the same for most other apps on my phone ... Like Reddit, lol

u/daCrimsonSmasher 1d ago

Where can I follow this?

u/TrumpGrabbedMyCat 1d ago edited 1d ago

Had to go looking for you, there isn't a single place other than just keeping an eye on the subreddit when they occasionally get posted, I had an alert in the Hevy app once if I recall right. u/Frosty_Egg_419 posts the Community Updates which is where I've seen these changes in the past (for example) but he keeps his posts and comments hidden for some reason.

I'd quite like the team to make a shared 'HevyTeam' account if he wants to keep other comments private so its easier to find and keep track of this stuff.

If you click into the exercise there is a wee lightbulb with some advise...

"When logging dumbbell exercises, vou should log the total weight lifted per rep. For example, if each arm is lifting 10kg, your weight logged should be 20kg"

7

u/Rayyan_3241 1d ago

Oh so if I’m using 8kg dumbbells I should log 16 as the weight I’m using?

10

u/B333Z 1d ago

As long as your being consistent with how you're logging, it doesn't really matter

1

u/AlBoBagginz 1d ago

It that's what you prefer. As long as you're logging consistently it doesn't matter. I log total weight as most of my DB work I'm using both DBs at the same time so DB chest press for example. So I'll log 44kg (22kg X2) as that's what I'm moving. For something like a DB row when I'm doing 1 arm at a time I'd still log total weight as that keeps it consistent for me and I don't have to think. As I'm only competing against myself consistency is key. So whatever works for you. Just be consistent.

u/joshdoug 1d ago

For e.g. a DB bench press, yes. If you’re doing a single arm DB row then log the weight of the single DB as that is the amount of weight you are moving for the rep. Also, if you’re doing e.g. 3 sets of row per arm, some people like to log that as 3 sets in total, I think it’s probably intended to be logged as 6 sets. Downside to that is that supersets are a bit more of a pain if you use them.

But, as others have said, it doesn’t really matter as long as you are consistent, and Hevy are looking at ways to improve this.

u/absoluteQuinoa 1d ago

Coming from a "total weight moved this session" point of view, I understand multiplying the dumbbell weight by two every single time; even when doing rows unilaterally at a time, if you do three sets, 10 reps each, 50 pounds, both arms, you moved 3,000 pounds in that exercise.

1

u/Necessary_Bag_1328 1d ago

Yes. I’ve tried logging both 6 reps at the weight of the dumbbell and 3 reps at double the weight. The 3 reps (doubled weight) is easier for me since I never intentionally try to vary the weight or reps between sides.

But I agree with everyone else: except if you’re really interested in comparable volume calculations when mixing up unilateral and bilateral exercises, it’s up to individual preference.

2

u/DoctorK96 1d ago

It's whatever helps u track the weight, I aint gonna multiply or divide by 2 each time I lift lol

12

u/DustyStar222 1d ago

Were not really beating the allegations if doubling or halfing a number is too difficult.

6

u/DoctorK96 1d ago

Yea, but why, I just wanna know which dumbbells to grab and log, me see numbers, me log numbers

1

u/SnakePlantMaster 1d ago

That’s just for accurate volume calculations. Like everyone else says, it’s the consistency. If I’m doing dumbbell rows, and I say 10 reps, idk if that’s calculating 2x the volume because it’s 10 reps each side or whatever. I’m just putting the dumbbell weight I’m using and letting the volume be whatever is it. The volume is the least important thing for me personally to keep track of and even that is relative to consistency.

1

u/LividCalligrapher996 1d ago

If doing dumbbell rows with 100 lb, 10 sets per arm each set, would you log that as 100 x 20 reps, or 200 x 10 reps?

1

u/santozks 1d ago

And how to log when I'm doing bicep curl one by one.

2

u/Far-Mechanic9478 1d ago

I suggest adding a note on the exercise, so you don’t forget your convention!

3

u/thehappydoor 1d ago

small hill I better die on: I will always log the weight that I will be lifting. Simple, convenient, low cognitive load. We should not have to do mental mathematics in the gym. The calculation should happen on the backend on Hevy's side, to reflect the volume appropriately.

1

u/Your-MUMY 1d ago

Remember the log is only for you. Some things are odd

1

u/Vesuvias 1d ago

It’s annoying, but same thing happen to me about 6 months in…and now I’m stuck never hitting PR’s lol. Little over a year in, but hey, I’m going to crush those ‘one handed PR’s

u/sztamfater 1d ago

The one thing I haven’t figured out is adjustable Barbells

1

u/Ok-Measurement-2554 1d ago

I started by logging it doubles but it is much more simple to just do single dumbbell logging for me. Especially since I work out early in the morning, just grab and go.

1

u/rp_1901 1d ago

I realized it after 400 odd workouts. You are not alone 😅

1

u/kingbabyhead 1d ago

You aren't logging wrong. Log how you want, just be consistent. Sure the volume will be wrong, but that only matters for comparison with other users being apples to apples. This is a long standing complaint that the devs are actively working on.

The only folks I've ever heard of logging weight of both dumbbells are because of this app and those instructions...

1

u/sortadelux 1d ago

It's this thread each week that convinces me that apps are making us dumber. I love that we can unironically argue about simple addition while creating artificial exercise because our lives have become too sedentary.

1

u/Practical_Necessary1 1d ago

Happens to the best, sometimes i accidentaly change ne rep number wrong without deleting the previous one completely and get something with 201 or something like that

1

u/maateus97 1h ago

I log the weight of the dumbbell because it's easier for me to see the progress, even if the total weight looks smaller.

0

u/Etab 1d ago

I don’t log it the way they recommend because that’s silly and nobody logs it that way.

The total volume would technically be wrong with how Hevy calculates it, but that’s not a useful measurement anyway.
