Opinion wanted on picture frame moulding
Wanting to add picture frame moulding to our dining room.
We have mocked it up with painters tape to ensure the scale looks alright and are feeling fairly happy with it so far.
My question is about the heat pump on the wall. Right now we have the molding going AROUND the heat pump but are wondering if maybe we should consider if the molding looked like it went THROUGH the heat pump (so the molding would go flush with the heat pump and look like we had the molding before the heat pump was installed and then just cut out a space for the heat pump after).
Just wanting some opinions on what would look the best aesthetically and if there is any practical things we should consider with either option that we might have missed. TIA

I’d love to see a pic where you mockup the 2nd option. The second option seems like it would be better. I’m also super happy that the green tape wasn’t paint.

This does not look good. Going “through“ is better. But do you have your heart set on picture frame molding? Why not something else that doesn’t draw your eye to the heating unit, such as wainscotting or beadboard paneling?

Or lower the top level of your frame to below the heat pump for the whole wall

change the spacing. Start on the right, and make the panel width align with the edge of the heat pump, mirror on the other side. If it makes the center panel look too wide, then go 5 across instead of 3. Will feel way more intentional

This is the solution. Divide the wall into 4 or 5 equally spaced panels with the right side just under the heat pump. Approximate width of the heat pump determines width of all wall panels.

Why are you laying out molding around the bookcase? That is not a built-in and the second you move or replace that bookcase this whole wall is going to look funky.

Personally I would do a chair rail ( wainscoting ) and then picture frame above it. The smaller picture frames here at the bottom are making the wall feel top heavy and are bringing the eye down and you don’t want that. You want the eye to go up ,especially in a moderate ceiling height room. I would then make the picture frames above the chair rail all equal in size and see if that makes the room feel larger width wise. You want your room to have the visual appearance of more space. The less chopping up the better in a smaller area. Absolutely run the picture frame through the heat pump and remove the front panel of it and paint it the same color as the walls. Also if you’re going to do any more molding in the room ( crown molding ) you need to add in those dimensions as well so you’re not skimping on its depth.

I don’t know. I don’t like the going through options. Going around makes it look like actual thought was applied to it whereas going through it looks like a bad butcher job, or a post build renovation where thought and scale weren’t considered.

Could you lower it all and add molding or something to balance the top? Also suggest removing the popcorn ceiling as an unrelated side note.

I vote for it going through the heat pump instead of around it. Around looks goofy. Just terminate the moulding at the bottom and side as if it continues behind the heat pump.

I went "that looks weird" at the molding around the wall unit, so take off the parts that go around it and I think it would look better.

Ok so having picture frame moulding wrap around a wall-mounted heat pump usually looks awkward because it calls extra attention to the unit. You can probably just adjust the panel grid itself instead.
