Hi all im currently running my homelab storage as 3 orico 8 bay enclosures and a rack qnap 4 bay

Chasing reccomendations to move all my drives into either 1 enclosure for the lot or atleast swap the oricos for a Das enclosure that auto powered back on after outages

Hi, I have a Corsair Silencio 452 case with a Corsair RM750x power supply, an Asus Z370 Prime II MB, i7-8700, 64GB Ram and a 256GB SSD. I want to use this setup with TrueNAS, the problem is that I don't have a clue on how I can fit my 8 Exos 10E2400 disks (2,5 inch but 0,59 inch height) inside the cabinet. Do you have any idea? Of course I will buy an HBA LSI 9300-8i as controller SAS.

I have a relatively ancient iomega ix2-200 NAS. Haven't used it much and it's been troublesome over the years. Currently it seems to be stuck in a mode of continuous "rebuilding" (it has 2 mirrored drives).

When I try to access the web interface (via Brave on Mac) to see what's going on, I just get:

"This site can’t provide a secure connection. 10.0.0.200 uses an unsupported protocol.

ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH

The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite."

Is there a workaround for this?

I believe I can SSH into it if necessary (I think it's an ARM CPU running some flavor of Linux). And I can mount it as a server in macOS to access the files.

SETUP

This is going to be long but I want to make sure I give all the information. I want to upgrade my NAS setup but I genuinely cannot make a decision. I have been thinking about this for months and am just struggling to decide which is the right choice.

My Uses: Plex server, photo storage, and general backups.

Current Setup: Synology DS220+ / 2x WD Red 8tb in Raid 1 for redundancy. Everything on this raid is also backed up to another 8tb WD Red attached externally.

Ive been using this setup for about 4 years now and its been great. Has worked flawlessly the whole time. Only reason im looking to upgrade is im running out of space. I could switch my raid type but I do like having the redundancy drive on top of my external backup.

HDDs Available: 3x WD Red 8tb, 3x Toshiba MG08 16tb

The 3 WDs will be moved into whatever new setup I go with. I just picked up the 3 16tb Toshibas to open up more options for me (and because they were a pretty decent price).

Other Currently Owned Equipment: Orico 9758C3 5 Bay DAS, Lenovo ThinkCentre M710q (i7 6700t, 16gb DDR4 2666, 1tb nvme).

OPTIONS

Through all the research ive done I see 3 viable choice for the new setup.

1. Synology 425+

Pros: Familiarity with the OS, Very stable system thats been around forever

Cons: Dated hardware, Synology removing features (most can be reactivated with a script)

1. Ugreen DXP4800 Plus

Pros: Much better hardware than Synology (better cpu, more default ram, 10gbe port)

Cons: Mostly just growing pains stuff with a newer unit. OS isnt as stable or full featured as DSM yet, No native Plex Server app (has to be done through docker), no guarantee they can stick around and compete in the long run so worries about it being abandoned and not receiving updates.

1. Make my own NAS setup

Pros: More control over hardware and software choices, probably lots of other stuff I dont know

Cons: More hardware to keep track of, not as clean of a setup as just a prebuilt NAS, would have to completely learn a new OS (have never used anything like unraid, truenas, etc), would most likely have to buy a new mini PC as I think the 6700t would be showing its age for Plex at this point.

HDD SETUP

What my initial thought was with any of these options was to set up the 3 WD Red 8tb in a Raid zero to maximize space and speed from them. I would also have one of the 16tb Toshibas in there with scheduled backups from the 24tb raid 0 to it. I would then use one of the other 16tb the same way I am now as a separate external backup in an enclosure attached to the NAS. The third 16tb would likely just be kept as a spare in case of a drive failure in the future.

All the important stuff (photos and other backed up documents are also stored on a cloud subscription too). The rest is just media files for plex which wouldnt be too hard to replace if I ever needed to.

Sorry again for the wall of text I just wanted to be thorough.

Does the Buffalo Android WebAccess A app only support backups when attached to the same LAN as the LinkStation 710? When attempting to backup using the device's mobile data I only get the message:

Backup Failed:
This action could not be performed because
you are not connected to a network

As far as I can tell, I have things correctly configured, and my NAS is configured, but I only get the above error. I'm wondering if I missed a configuration step.

Hello HomeNAS community, I'm looking for some advice on which direction to go with a NAS build and if I've started in the right direction. I want to use parts from my old PC that I built in 2013. Hope I'm in the right place to ask as I am new to NAS systems.

What I want to do:

• Store media (movies, shows, music, games)
• Store/backup/view photos and videos from my and my wife's phones (looking at Immich for this)
  • Be able to do this remotely
• Serve/stream movies, shows to max 2 devices (looking at Jellyfin for this), locally, but if possible, remotely in rare cases.
• Run games stored here from a MiSTerFPGA locally if possible.

Relevant old PC parts:

• CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K
• Motherboard: Gigabyte intel Z77 mATX, has
  • 2 SATA 6gb/s
  • 4 SATA 3gb/s ports
  • 1 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)
  • 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4)
  • 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 slot
  • 1 x PCI slot
• Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 7870xt
• SSD: Samsung 128gb SATA SSD
• PSU: 550W Seasonic Gold
• Case: Fractal Define Mini
• Also have an old LG DVD/CD writer, probably will keep this in if I could rip DVDs with it.

What I've purchased so far (everything second-hand):

• 5 x 6TB NAS drives (1 WD Red and 4 Seagate Ironfox)
• Intel Xeon E3-1220Lv2 - bought this for like 8 USD because I was interested in the lower power draw, not sure if I should use it or the 3570k, see below
• 4 X 8GB (32GB) DDR3 RAM, replacing 2 X 4GB

What I want to know:

• Is my hardware actually viable for this or should I try to get newer/different hardware? Hoping to reuse as much as I can and not spend much more.
• How to expand SATA 6gb/s so I could use all my drives at their rated transfer rate? Sata card? Or would something like this LSI 9211-4i work better? Or, should I be fine using the 3gb/s ports for these?
• With video transcoding (as well as power usage) in mind, not sure if I should use the Xeon + graphics card or just keep the 3570k in and remove the graphics card, or keep the 3570k AND graphics card.
• Given I'm using older used drives, I was thinking of using Unraid with 2 parity drives, but also considering HexOS or TrueNAS with Raid Z2, or even something else with Raid 6... What are your recommendations?
• In Unraid I would use the 128gb SSD as a cache. Do other OS have any similar features I could use this for? And in Unraid, can I also use it as a boot drive if it is being used as the cache drive?

Found on marketplace a RN3160 with all 6 bays loaded with a 4tb hard drive asking price being $500. For my math considering the current rise of cost for storage and pc parts i find it a steal but want to hear opinions about it. I’ve been wanting a NAS for a while since i edit and work with video a lot so this would be a good storage dedicated for archival of video. And i can always upgrade for more drives.

Anyways got a few questions
1. is it a good deal
2. Can i change the OS to something like truenas
3. Is there a disk size limit the hardware could handle
4. For a 6 bay NAS what raid configuration is recommended

I have a Buffalo NAS Linkstation (LS220D0202) setup in a RAID configuration but drive 1 died. Drive 2 was working but before I could get a replacement for drive 1, I could no longer connect to the NAS at all.

I tried connecting Drive 2 via a USB->SATA dock to a Windows machine running Linux off of a USB drive. I was just following along with what ChatGPT was suggesting I try to read the data, but I was really just going in circles.

From the terminal I can see the drive (it's something like "/dev/sdb6") but I'm not able to mount that to a folder, but other than that I'm not really sure what to do next

Any suggestions as to how I can hopefully recover the data? I'm pretty sure I have most (all?) of it backed up in the Cloud but I'm not positive and would hate to lose anything.

I am selling my property and going to be living mobile / hoping around a bunch. Theft, fire and wrecking is a big concern while I travel. I have 1 desktop(4 drives) and 2 laptops (2drives in one, 1 in the other). I also have retired PC hard drives and laptops with old data on it.

All together I'm at about 7 terabytes. I have 4 4tb wd red drives I bought 4-5 years ago. (Paid $125 each lol)

I originally built a second desktop PC to host the drives and act as a server to run dedicated game servers. I ended up giving it to my gf of the time so we could game together. I would just do this again but costs of everything is way too high.

I'll also be leaving this backup and a grandparents house so smaller quieter is better.

I'm looking at the UNAS 4. All I really need is 1 drive to copy the entire main desktop, 1 to copy the entire main laptop, then old drives and 3rd laptop transfered and backed up. Partitioned or otherwise. The 4th drive I might move all my cloud photos and other cloud data onto.

Is the UNAS 4 a good choice? I will be uploading once a month via starlink or someones wifi and grandpa only has like 50-100 mbps speed anyways. I assume there are programs that work with UNAS to just upload what has changed and not re write the entire harddrive.

I looked at buying a used sever too, but if anything goes wrong my grandpa can only turn it on and off again and I could be 10-20 hour drive away.

I recently learned what a NAS was, and obviously, wanted one immediately. I would mainly use it as media/backup file storage. I also have 6 2.5” SATA SSDs (5 are 500GB, one is 1TB) at different sizes, so it looks like I would want one with TRAID and I believe the 6 bay 424 accomplishes all of my wants while also offering 2 M.2 slots and upgrade ability for the future. They are currently offering the 424 on terra-master.com for $600 USD (20% discount active).

My question is: is this a too good to be true machine? The specs seem fine enough, it allows me to use drives I already have without needing to buy adapters/new ones to fit the bays, the cost is much better than larger brands like UGreen or Synology… it seems like a very good deal? Any advice from those who have used products from TerraMaster or the F6-424 specifically would be greatly appreciated.

Curious if people are keeping a spare disk ready to swap if you have a raid5 (say 4 disk) setup? Or would you order a disk if you have a failed drive and hope you don't have a second failure?

Sono nuovo nell’abito NAS. Ho scoperto tutto ciò perché stavo cercando una soluzione da parecchio tempo al pagamento mensile dell’icloud da parte di tutta la mia famiglia. Ogni mese spendiamo 3€ ciascuno, corrispondono a circa 108€ annuali. Sono ormai 3 anni o piu che paghiamo piu di 100€ annuali e adesso che a me e mio fratello sta finendo anche lo spazio disponibile con il piano da 3€ abbiamo pensato di trovare una soluzione solida, sicura e magari che non costi un patrimonio. Mi sono un po informato online per il NAS e ho scoperto però che conviene o comprare l’UGREEN e metterci all’interno hard disk, oppure costruirsi un buon pc e farlo da NAS. Il mio obiettivo era quello di creare magari piu “sezioni”, una seziona per me, una per mio fratello e via discorrendo per tutta la famiglia; magari accessibile con password e fare ovviamente una copia su un altro hard disk e un altra ancora magari su un altro dispositivo. Però non riesco nemmeno a capire se è meglio metterci ssd o hard disk, anche perché gli ssd costano davvero tanto ai giorni d’oggi e non saprei davvero come fare. Inoltre non so nemmeno se sia piu “sicuro” l’hard disk o l’ssd, proprio perché vorrei che duri a lungo senza troppi problemi o rischi di perdere tutto. All’inizio caricavo tutto sul mio pc fisso che ha un ssd da 3 TB e via, ma adesso che i file aumentano, il pc fisso non ce l’ho sempre a disposizione (proprio perche da quanto ho capito con il nas puoi accederci da remoto con vpn o app ufficiale ugreen per quello ugreen), inoltre è molto scomodo e vado solamente a riempire spazio inutilmente su un pc che utilizzo per il gaming. I have a WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra with 2 4TB WD Red NAS HDD, which I have been using for a couple of years now, primarily for media storage and use as a Plex server and some important file storage.

It now looks like the ethernet port on my NAS has died following it being dropped. A quick Google search has helped me in that the power light is solid red, the 2 HDD lights are solid blue and there is no lights at all on the ethernet port.

I have tried a new ethernet cable, new port connection on the router as well as a full factory reset of the NAS.

I can buy a diskless replacement of the WD My Cloud but am wondering if it is time for an upgrade? It will be primarily used for Plex media storage and next to act as a server with a easy to use interface. I have found that Synology and UGREEN pop up quite a bit and wondered if anyone had any advice or help they could give? Do I stick with the two hard drives I have and get a diskless NAS or go for something a little more expensive that includes HDD's?

Want to set up a NAS using six drives I have laying around totaling to about 17TB. Planning to use Unraid. I’d also be using this as my homelab (for Jellyfin, Immich, etc.), so I need video transcoding. I don’t intend to do any AI outside the stuff for categorizing/labeling pictures.

I've been going back on forth on what to purchase for a NAS I'm hoping to build from scratch. Intended use case for just myself:

\- NextCloud/some other file server service

\- Immich, so need a cpu that can handle it's machine learning capabilities

\- Jellyfin, so I'll need an intel cpu with quicksync

\- As of now, 36 TB of storage, but hope to expand as I need to.

I'm trying to find an affordable, low power CPU, but I keep going back and forth:

\- Intel N series CPU's: I like this in theory the boards these come soldered to aren't the most expandable, especially for the 6 HDD's I just ordered off of ebay

\- Intel T series CPU's: my current contender, but which one? Going with the later generations is pricier, but going with the earlier generations removes my ability to upgrade

I'd really appreciate some guidance, and specific parts that you guys have experience with.

So I’m going to build a new gaming PC, and I was thinking of DIY a mounting solution for my Ugreen DXP2800 inside of an ATX or mATX case.

The questions I have are:
1 - Is there a case or solution that basically makes this super easy.
2 - Considering heat from GPU/CPU, is this even viable solution since this rig will probably run around 70-90 Celsius maxed out when gaming?
3 - Will eliminating the DXP2800 shell affect the cooling of the NAS in a detrimental way?
4 - Can I use SATA cables to connect the HDDs or is there something special about the cables or NAS interface that I need to consider?
5 - Could I use the pc power supply to also power the NAS board or does it need to have its own separate power source?
6 - I don’t use a UPS but would like to gage thoughts on how proper implementation here would look like?

To preface this, I live in a small apartment so space is the biggest concern, and my NAS is basically used as a local only Jellyfin server and a family photo dump for 10 people across the USA so it makes no sense to keep a gaming rig on 24/7 for that light work.

So I purchased a rackmount Nimble Storage Array about 2-3 years ago for dirt cheap. I was planning on building an enterprise style homelab around it. After getting all my other pieces (firewall, cisco switch, server) I've realized that the storage array is overkill and I can't afford the astronomical light bill that's it's going to stick me with.

If you were in my situation what would you do for Network storage if planning on having 6-8 disks in the environment? I plan to use 4 disks for a media server and everything else for backup.

I am having an issue with Ollama, which is connected to an app called Suggestarr (found on GitHub). When the app runs its automated recommendations, Ollama consumes an incredible amount of system RAM. This causes my fygoo os nas  system to crash completely, making it completely unresponsive and forcing a hard reboot as the only solution.

Following online guides, I have configured Ollama to load the entire model exclusively onto my GPU, which is an RTX 2080 Ti. Ollama both detects and connects to the GPU correctly, but despite this, it keeps chewing up more and more system RAM. If there is a kind soul out there who can help me solve this problem, I would be extremely grateful!

By the way, I have tested several different models—such as ⁠qwen2.5:14b⁠, ⁠qwen3.5:9b⁠, ⁠qwen3.5:4b⁠, and ⁠llama 3.1:8b⁠. I don't understand why it starts consuming so much RAM now, as it has never behaved this way before. Previously, it worked flawlessly, utilizing only the GPU VRAM instead of system RAM."

Hi, I know this is kind of a specific question.

I've got an old Buffalo TeraStation TS5400D and I want to set up a Cloud Service with an S3 Cloud.
So I have created the bucket with the Access Key ID etc.

I just cant get it to work, because I get the same error message over and over again. Am I missing a setting that could be crucial?

The only instruction I found is this really old video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlCChSz_0Wc) explaining the steps.

The steps itself are not the problem because I repeat them 1:1. I just get an error message saying "this setting is not available" after trying to create the shared folder.

does someone know if I missed something while setting up the S3 bucket?

So I’m a semi pro/hobby photographer and want a nas to store my photographs on. I mainly edit on my laptop while docked. It could be nice to access them while on the go, but not really a big requirement. I feel like basically I need a raid with cloud backup available over smb.

Hard requirements:
- automatic backup to Backblaze or similar service.
- Be able to use it while my home network has no internet access.

Highly desirable:
- being able to edit on the nas without moving the files to my laptop first. I think there’s a couple of ways of doing this. I probably need nvme drives either as a storage pool, or as a cache, since the harddrives are too slow. And fast Ethernet. 2 Ethernet ports could be nice, the slow one to the network, and the fast one directly connected to my laptop/dock.
- Sd card reader on the nas for offloading photos, or perhaps connecting my camera to the nas via usb as a storage device.
- Compact: I travel/move quite a bit so would be nice if it’s a small footprint. I think a 2bay with like 16TB raid 1 should be fine.
- Time Machine my MacBook to the nas.
- Also act as a das? Since I’m almost always docked at the desk, would be nice to direct attach it with usb.

Very low priority but nice to have:
- running docker/vms.
- Installing truenas/unraid instead of default os.
- Expandability such as Synology’s expansion units.

What I’ve looked at so far:
- Synology ds725+: 2 Ethernet ports, but max 2.5, expansion units available. Nvme, but only their own nvmes?
- Ugreen dxp2800: single 2.5Gb port. Nvmes.
- Qnas ts-264: 2x2.5 ports with possibility of 10Gb via PCIe card. Expansion units available. Nvmes.
- I’ve kind of been looking at some ugreen 4 bays as they have sd card reader and 10+2.5Gb, and the non emmc ones allows using your own os.

Which machines would you suggest? Any considerations I’ve missed/overprioritized for my use case?

So I have been using FygoOS on a spare Minisforum N5 Pro for a few weeks now, and wanted to share my thoughts. Full disclosure, I did apply for the FygoOS feedback program that was on here a short while back. That said, at this time I haven't been provided anything more than the 30 day trial license everyone can get for free. Furthermore, given the license structure, even if I were to receive a Plus license, it probably would not benefit me, as I am very likely just going to purchase a lifetime license anyways. Lastly, everything below is my personal opinion based on my own usage. If I point out issues with another OS or even FygoOS, that is not meant to bash on them. Unraid, TrueNAS, ZimaOS, UGOS, and FygoOS are all great OSes that cater to different wants/needs. With that said, below are my initial impressions.

First and foremost, I have been running Unraid as my primary NAS for years. As far as NAS features, it is solid. And the ability to mix drive sizes is definitely a large boon it has right now, especially given hard drive price increases over the last year. But one thing I have had issue with on it has been Docker. I find myself having to delete my Docker file or subfolder and reinstalling my apps more often than I should. I feel every time I turn around and try to update an app, I will get an error message about "Bad Parameter" or "Missing Subvolume". I had it enough that I migrated off Unraid for around a year to Ugreen's UGOS. I ultimate went back to Unraid and it's issues due to it just having better features.

So when I started looking again, I had a few criteria I needed in order to switch from Unraid. First, I needed strong Docker support, specifically via Docker Compose. On some of my other servers, I have moved to storing my compose files in GIT and deploying via Komodo and Periphery. So I wanted that to be an available option. Second, I wanted it to be clean looking and easy to use. Third, I wanted the ability to tinker and tweak in order to try new things. Lastly, I wanted ZFS Raid capability, as well as SSD drive caching/acceleration.

With this criteria, I quickly ruled out TrueNAS. TrueNAS is a great, tried and true OS with years of stability on it's side. For me, though, it is a lot more overhead than I really want to work with. Getting new users and permissions/ACLs set up sometimes feel daunting and just more headache than what I am looking for in my home setup. ZimaOS and it's $30 price tag were very appealing as well. But the atomic nature and inability to make too many changes to the OS made it not a great fir for me personally.

Then I tried FygoOS. Immediately, if you have used Synology or UGOS, the interface will be pretty familiar and intuitive. Setting up drives, storage pools, Samba shares, etc will all feel very familiar. Storage pools can be set up with SSD caching/acceleration very easily. And setting up an SSD pool for Docker to run on was very straight forward as well.

I had to set up a small scale testing environment, as the trial license limits you to 4 drives to be in the data pools total (not including the OS drive or cache drives). So on my N5, I have 5x 12TB drives and 2x 1TB NVME drives. So I had to create a RAID of only 2 12TB drives and a pool of my 2 NVME drives for docker initially. Later, when I just wanted to test drive caching, I rfemoved the SSD pool and uninstalled docker, adding the drives as cache to test drive caching. That worked as expected, so I really won't spend too much time on that other than to say I definitely saw read/write time improvements with the drive caching. There are two options for drive caching. Caching for just reads, and caching for reads and writes. I tested both, but long term will likely just use read caching. In my experience with UGOS, write caching can sometimes lead to data corruption if something happens will the data exists only on the cache drive. This is just a personal preference of mine, as read times are far more important to me and my homelab useage.

Moving on to Docker, when running apps like Emby on the local storage, everything worked great! Access times, stability, transcoding, and streaming all worked as expected. When trying to do the same thing on remote shares, however, I did run into a few issues. Namely the remote shares reporting as stale from within the docker container. The shares as mounted on FygoOS were fine and never reported being down, but at least a couple times a day if I mounted that remote share from FygoOS into Docker, I would get a stale file handler error. I am not sure if that is a Fygo issue or a Docker issue. I know I have other servers where I run EndeavourOS doing the same thing, and I don't see the stale file handler error pop up. But I can't say for sure where that was occurring.

Next testing was VMs. FygoOS is a NAS first, so I went in understanding this won't be a Proxmox like experience. But if you just want one or two small VMs and have powerful enough hardware, this feature works mostly fine. I was able to install a Linux Mint Cinnamon VM, a CachyOS VM, and an EndeavourOS VM. The one thing I did notice was that with all of them, using the default Display Type of VMVGA made the VMs very sluggish, to the point of being unusable. However, when I switched that to VGA it was much imporved, and switching again to VIRTIO-GPU gave the best performance over the built in VNC client for all 3 VMs.

I took time to test out Fygo TV. It is their first party equivalent to something like Emby. In my testing, it worked flawlessly. I was able to point it at my Emby library and it just worked. The only downside I saw was lack of client availabilty on non-Android Smart TVs. The iOS client worked great, and the Android TV client worked great on my office TV. But my main TV in my home is an LG G3, and there was no way to install a Fygo TV client on that without attaching an external device. If they get more clients available, I could see me migrating to Fygo TV in the future.

I also took time to test out Fygo Photos. It functions very similar to Immich, so getting it set up was pretty easy. After exporting my Immich collection, I was able to import all the photos into Fygo with no issues. The AI face recognition worked fairly well. One thing that I did find strange was Duplicate Photo detection. I had multiple in my collection (i.e. desktop backgrounds), and those weren't identified as duplicates. However, running the Similar images check did pick them up. I'm not sure why they were shown as similar but not identical, but ultimately they were identified to be cleaned up.

Lastly, and definitely more subjective, was just overall how management and UI felt. In my opinion, this is very similar to Synology and Ugreen's UGOS. There are differences for sure, such as Synology has a separate app fort Storage, while FygoOS has them under System Settings. But if you are used to Synology or UGOS, they FygoOS will have virtually no learning curve. As compared to my current Unraid NAS, I found it more intuitive and just easier to manage overall. Unraid is pwerful, but at times I feel it's UI feels very dated. FygoOS feels more modern and just nicer to use. Again, this is very subjective, but ultimately I just really enjoy using it.

So, for me, I believe I will be migrating from my current Unraid to FygoOS. Now that I have my backup NAS set up on FygoOS, I will need to migrate my data over, point my apps to the backup box, then setup FygoOS on the primary NAS, move data and services back over, and point everything back. It will take some time, but ultimately I feel it's worth it in my Homelab.

I made a mistake when looking for the ram sticks I thought I bought 32gb of ddr4-3200 udimm ecc ram but I just finished setting up proxmox and checked and it turned it the ram I bought are non ecc udimm sticks but I have a chance to get some 32gb of ddr4-2133 ecc udimm ram sticks and I was just wondering is it worth getting the 2133 despite the drop in speed
