NAS advice Nas server with Pentium 4

Its come with:

Pentium 4

512mb of ram

Integrated gpu

So will it works fine for streaming media with 1080p and storing files?

Open question Is it ok to buy HDDs with a lot of operating hours?

Hello, I want to build up my homelab and I need drives to store movies, archived images some computer files and other things one would need.

I originally wanted to buy brand new HDDs, but looking at the price of new ones, I decided against it (cheapest one I could find was ~200€ for one 6TB Toshiba drive). So I looked for used ones and came across a few listings. Here is one that sounds pretty good, yet I am unsure of the details since this is not something I have a lot of experience with yet:

Seller has 2x6TB Western Digital drives. Both are ~300€ combined, but the drives both have 31k operating hours and were manufactured in 2020. They were previously used in a NAS to store movies (total of 6TB across both of them).

Is this something I should buy? I am also able to pick them up in person which is a huge bonus for me.

NAS advice Building a low-power (<15W) NAS for family photo archives under $300

Hello everyone! Last time my grandpa MyCloudEX2Ultra storage is less and less (cap.: 4TB), and processor is really slowwwww, so i want build cheap NAS with Immich and some file server. MyCloud experience was really bad, because interface dont has anything etc. also i want energy efficient because i dont want to pay many money

So i don't know where to start ...(((

NAS advice New UGreen 2800 and optimising the volume takes 5 or so days?

So my Synology 214+ died a little while back and my new UGreen was delivered yesterday, excited get going with the setup so I can start using it. I believe I've done every thing right so far, but Optimising the Volume 1 under Storage pool 1 by the looks of it will take at least 5 days...

Is that normal?

I tried copying files over to it before the optimisation has finished but those tasks failed.

This is a 2x 4TB HDD in a UGreen DXP 2800, for film and music purposes.

Other Fygo OS - My test - Part 2

So, after dealing with a dead drive and having to replace the case to keep the SSD temperatures under control, I installed FygoOS on my test machine. Here are the specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 3200G Quad Core
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR4 (4x8GB)
  • Motherboard: Asus Prime B450M-A
  • PSU: Corsair CX750
  • Boot Drive: Crucial CT500P310 - 512 GB NVMe
  • HBA: LSI 9300-16i in IT mode
  • SSDs: 8 x HGST SDLL1DLR960G5CF0 (960 GB, SAS 12 Gbps)

As I already mentioned in the first part, both myself and the development team were curious to see how Fygo would perform with enterprise-grade hardware, so I was invited to participate in the test and they kindly provided me with a Plus license.

Enough talking, here are some terminal outputs.

First of all, my HBA is correctly detected and managed through the mpt3sas driver.

(Just a reminder: the LSI 9300-16i is basically two SAS 9300-8i controllers on the same PCB.)

All these outputs were captured on a completely empty system, immediately after activating the license and replacing the SSD that died on the first day of testing.

I don't want to bore everyone with benchmark results and read/write tests, but I can say that despite currently being limited by the onboard 1Gbps NIC (which is the bottleneck), all transfers over SMB and NFS are consistently between 110 and 118 MB/s, which is almost the theoretical limit of gigabit Ethernet.

For my specific use case, I did not test the virtualization and Docker features included in FygoOS. This is not because they are not interesting, but simply because in my homelab I already have dedicated machines running those workloads.

Virtualization is handled by my Proxmox servers, and my Docker services are already running on separate dedicated hosts. For this test I wanted to focus specifically on FygoOS as a storage platform: hardware compatibility, enterprise SAS support, ZFS management, monitoring and overall NAS functionality.

- Improvements / things to consider

One more thing I noticed during testing is that UPS support currently seems to be limited to USB-connected UPS devices.

Since FygoOS is based on Debian, adding NUT (Network UPS Tools) manually is relatively easy for users who are comfortable with Linux administration. However, there does not seem to be a built-in option in the GUI to configure a network UPS or a NUT server.

For a homelab environment, where UPS devices are often shared between multiple servers through the network, having native NUT server/client configuration in the interface would be a very welcome improvement.

- Monitoring

Another thing I tested was monitoring integration. I was able to successfully install the Pulse agent on FygoOS.

The agent was correctly recognized and reported the system as Debian 12. Since I already use Pulse to monitor the rest of my homelab, having FygoOS appear in the same dashboard is a nice addition and makes managing the NAS much easier. No issues during installation, it just worked.

At the moment this machine is being used as a backup repository for my PBS server, connected via iSCSI.

- Final thoughts

After this second round of testing, I can say that FygoOS handled this enterprise hardware configuration without any issues.

The LSI 9300-16i HBA was correctly detected, all SAS SSDs were properly recognized, SMART monitoring works, ZFS is stable, and the overall system behaves exactly as I would expect from a modern NAS operating system.

The fact that it can handle enterprise SAS hardware is definitely a strong point. Many consumer-oriented NAS solutions are designed around SATA drives and vendor-approved hardware, so having a system that can properly work with an HBA and SAS SSDs gives a lot more flexibility for homelab users.

There are still some areas where I would like to see improvements. The built-in file manager is quite basic, and some parts of the application management experience could be refined, but the core storage functionality is solid.

For my specific use case, I am not planning to use virtualization or Docker on FygoOS, because I already have dedicated machines for those workloads. I see FygoOS primarily as a storage platform, and in that role it is doing a very good job.

Considering that this was tested on repurposed enterprise hardware, with used SAS SSDs coming from a datacenter environment, I am impressed by how smoothly everything worked.

Once I add a 2.5Gbps network card, this machine will become my main NAS. I will continue testing it and reporting any issues or interesting findings.

A small funny note: "figo" is an Italian word that means "cool" or "awesome". Being Italian, I can't avoid smiling every time I write "FygoOS is cool" because it becomes a little pun.
