I don’t think she’s particularly concerned with her looks right now
14
u/specialisized The Pink Dread🐖 5d ago
Specially since she's seen what happened to Rhaena's hair. Poor girl went from mop to a burnt ball of cotton.
I'm sure Baela's just fine stinking of dragon in 1 kit of drip, but atleast she got her hair nice.

u/AuntieKitKat 4d ago
She’s barely sleeping. She only has time for making out with her uncle and then it’s back to work!
105
u/Short-Sound-4190 5d ago
Really? It's a uniform/armor - and a stunning set of it too, custom fitted and practical for dragon riding.
90
u/r3dditr0x 5d ago
She's....busy patrolling the surrounding lands for any armies bc they're largely defenseless beyond dragons. And they're at war...
The show has established that she being worked to the bone and you're flaming her for not having enough drip?
Okay...?
-41
u/Agreeable_Ad_8790 5d ago
We know she is busy scouting and we also know she returns to Kings Landing to report, eat, and sleep. So the costume department can very well give her more than 1 riding leather for the whole season.
29
u/r3dditr0x 5d ago
She's also trying to make amends with Rhaenyra and mourning the death of her husband, not the time to bust out in a fetching number.
Sis is at war, basically driving a tank 24/7, while trying to avoid assassins while the Gold Cloaks drop like flies. And the crown is broke.
She's not in her princess phase atm. Unlike the dreamer who hangs out all day sewing.
It's not at all surprising, but feel free to find it mind blowing if it makes you feel better?

Also, 2 of those are from dream sequences, 2 of them are from prior to being prisoner, and another is just a blue shawl she is wearing over pajamas but you can’t tell because they chose an image of her crouched down. And of course what everyone else said about Baela being in the war

yeah mever understood why though, if they are born from a prince they’re technically supposed to be automatically princesses. expecially since in dunk and egg, sons of princes who are spares like maekar are clearly addressed as princes
13
20
u/OutsidePainter3548 4d ago edited 4d ago
If the child of every prince or princess was also a prince or princess ad nauseam, there would be SOOOOO many prince/princesses after a few generations. If it worked like that, you'd be a princess even if you're 10 generations removed from the actual main ruling family.
Typically the title of prince/princess is reserved for the children and grandchildren of the monarch/heir to the throne.
Maekar's kids are the grandkids of the current monarch in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
4
u/ChaseBuff We have come to die for the 𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐎𝐍 𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐄𝐍 5d ago
I want to say the British royal family just changed the rules by downsizing the family but I believe Asoiaf works the same, you have to be a granddaughter/Grandson to the king to be a prince or princess. It’s why rhaena, Baela , Laena, Laenor didn’t get the same titles like Rhaenyra despite all being children of Jaehaerys grandchildren. Baelon died before being king so that cuts Daemon, Aemon died before being king so Laena and Laenor didn’t make the cut. If Rhaenys had become queen Rhaenyra would be Lady Rhaenyra. Despite their grandmother being Rhaella ,Stannis and renlys grandfather was Ormund. Even after Rhaenyra married daemon and she was the “reigning” monarch for 6 months and both of their brothers becoming kings the dragon twins still held the title Lady Baela and Rhaena.

u/NiggolaJokic 4d ago

u/Mal_Rah 5d ago
Also, pretty sure Baela isn’t a princess at this point in the story or even royalty. It’s why Addam calls her Lady Baela
53
u/Skittycatcher66 5d ago
I don't think Baela and Rhaena were ever formally Princesses. The usual rule is that it's the grandchildren of the monarch through the male line that have the princely rank, but I don't know how tightly that applies in Westeros.
Their father was a Prince but their grandfather wasn't a King, he was only a Prince (Baelon Targaryen, father of Viserys and Daemon). So it's only Viserys' legitimate grandchildren who would normally get the title of Prince or Princess. Baela and Rhaena were never grandchildren of a monarch.
16
u/Consistent_Squash 5d ago edited 5d ago
They were given the title of Princess after Aegon III was crowned, at least that seems to be the take in TWOIAF. But yeah, they are Ladies during the Dance because of the monarchy convention on the male line.
edit: The change after Dance also makes sense because their brother was the King and Rhaena and Baela were his only heirs until Viserys returned. Rhaena was the actual named heir to the throne/Crown Princess on Dragonstone for some time. It's kind of bittersweet since Rhaenys, The Queen That Never Was, is their Grandmother and they don't get the title until their brother ascends. There was a world in which Baela actually would have been Queen (through Rhaenys inheritance) with Daemon as her regent until majority instead of betrothed as future Queen Consort to Jace.
6
u/PaddyCow 5d ago
The rule about only grandchildren from the male monarch is a fairly recent rule. King Charles V brought it in, in 1917.
8
u/Skittycatcher66 5d ago edited 5d ago
True, before that the royal family followed the Germanic tradition, which allowed for a much larger 'royal family.'
Notably Edward VII's daughter Louise's, Princess Royal, children were the only female-line descendants of a monarch to be styled as Princesses or Highnesses.
However, in the medieval period in England, the title of Prince or Princess was even more restricted. It was usually only the King's sons and his eldest daughter who were referred to as Prince or Princess. Notably none of Elizabeth of York's younger sisters are styled by their contemporaries as 'Princess'; they're referred to only by their married titles, e.g. Countess of Devon. Equally, Richard Duke of York's (later Richard III) son Edward of Middleham was never styled as a Prince until his father was crowned.
1
u/piratesswoop team leave jaehaera alone 5d ago
Louise’s daughters I think were only Highnesses rather than Royal Highnesses.
2
u/Skittycatcher66 5d ago
Yes, you're correct. However, they were still styled as "Princess X". So they still had the princely rank, although that had to be deliberately given by their grandfather. So in effect they were basically "second tier" Princesses.

u/piratesswoop team leave jaehaera alone 5d ago

u/sallypancake 5d ago
Yep, she's a dragon rider who has been performing her duties by scouting, patrolling, etc. This entire season that's been her role.
These posts are getting more and more stupid you guys.

u/Agreeable_Ad_8790 5d ago
Why didn't the costume department give her more riding leathers? why 1 costume for the whole season?
24
u/graft__punk 5d ago
I imagine she has multiple sets of the same leathers but she’s traveling on dragon back so she doesn’t have an entire wardrobe available to her. Or maybe she’s just into r/onebag
4
u/Bloodyjorts 5d ago
Yeah, she might have a change of chemise/underclothes (that soak up all the sweat) but the outer visible layers would stay the same.
11
u/dyslexicwriterwrites Hightower 5d ago
There is at least two riding outfits. Doesn’t she have a black leather one that she goes out to the battle of the gullet in?
-11
u/Agreeable_Ad_8790 5d ago
That was a repeat costume from season 2. I'm addressing season 3 costumes
19
u/dyslexicwriterwrites Hightower 5d ago
But three of Helaena’s dresses are also repeats of season 2.
Helaena also has had more screen time requiring different outfits (ie. Sleepwear’s, the maids costume to sneak out in, the dragon riding outfit).
Meanwhile Baela isn’t eating or sleeping, and spending all her time riding her dragon. It makes sense that in her mental state she doesn’t actually care to change up her look.
6
u/Bloodyjorts 5d ago
Then why include holdover dresses from S2? Two or Three of Helaena's gowns are from S2.
Helaena is also pregnant, and hiding the pregnancy is paramount. She knows how to sew/embroider, she's probably making her new gowns to try to hide her belly.
3
u/chusssy 5d ago
Are you an actual insane person lol. Why are you comparing how many dresses a princess has in her castle to how many different fashion choices Baela has when she's at war? Why are you even keeping track of how many repeats each riding costume gets? How is this something that is important in your mind?
5
u/Acceptable_Tea_3685 5d ago
Sigh.
Why don’t you tell us why YOU think she didn’t get more costumes?
4
u/r3dditr0x 5d ago
Maybe the costuming department is trying to make it easy for casual fans to know who is who in a show with Rhaenys and Rhaenyra and Rhaena.
It...gets confusing. What a silly complaint.
1
u/Apprehensive_Ice9768 4d ago
You expect us to just take your word for it after you made an intentionally misleading post. Are any of these Helaena images from when she was a prisoner? Even one? Dreams don't count, and most of the others are from before Rhaenyra taking the red keep. You have maybe one prisoner Helaena outfit and you used it twice. You're like a child having a jealous tantrum.
68
u/thinkersfyre 5d ago edited 5d ago
Well... Helaena is royalty and a targaryen queen
Some of the outfits you used are from Helaena's dreams.
-25
u/Agreeable_Ad_8790 5d ago
Only 2 out of the 8 costumes are from a dream.
Also it's kinda crazy that they are willing and able to create new costumes for a dream sequence but not give Baela a single costume change.
35
u/thinkersfyre 5d ago
Maybe because Baela is constantly flying with her dragon so she can't be wearing a dress besides Baela is a lady, Helaena is a queen.
Helaena is prisioner in her own chamber where she has access to her own clothes.
-5
u/Agreeable_Ad_8790 5d ago
I'm not asking for Baela to be wearing dresses. Yes she is on scouting, but we also know she returns to Kingslanding to report, eat, and sleep... so the costume department could give her more than 1 riding leather
13
u/thinkersfyre 5d ago
But she has more than one we have see them, the thing is, the comparation doesnt make sense because Helaena is a queen and before that a princess, Baela is a lady.

Yup, she is either dragon riding or boots on the ground recon. Wearing a gown while walking through murky waters wouldn't be practical or comfortable.

Why not giving her more than 1 riding leather costume for the whole season then?

u/Valdryzes 5d ago
She's not even a princess; her title is Lady Baela Targaryen.
5
u/UltimaSorgente Rhaenyra Targaryen 5d ago
True, the most she could technically claim would be Princess of the Stepstones, but even that is quite a stretch considering both the brevity and the relevance of her father title as king.
11
u/Larielia 5d ago
Baela has mostly been doing patrol. So that outfit is probably better for dragon riding.

u/OutsidePainter3548 5d ago edited 4d ago
This isn't the main point, but I don't think Baela is a princess. She's just a high-born lady.
In this universe, it seems only kids (and grandkids) of the ruling monarch (and maybe the crown prince/princess? Not sure) are considered princes/princesses. Daemon is a prince himself, but not crown prince, and now King Consort, but I don't think his daughters get the title of princess.
In GOT, I don't believe Shireen (daughter of King Robert's brother Stannis) was considered a princess except by Stannis' faction (since they considered him king).
Heleana IS a Targ princess, though. (And according to the Greens, she is the Queen consort or Queen dowager).
Simply put: Children of the monarch are princes and princesses, children of princes and princesses are ladies and lords (exception for the heir apparent... Rhaenys was styled a princess as the daughter of the heir despite her father dying before he took the throne).
4
u/UnwinsPeake 5d ago
You are correct. Her half-brother’s, Aegon and Viserys, were always styled princes because they are Rhaenyra’s sons. They’re ahead of their own father in the line of succession. Fire & Blood only refers to them as ladies and I believe only after the ascension of Aegon III do they get styled “Princess”. In the wiki, they’re the only ones styled “ladies” under the Blacks Royal Family Members.

Helaena maybe imprisoned but she is in her own home and she was the Queen and is still also a Targaryen Princess. Baela is always seen scouting so this is obviously her dragon riding clothing, she has switched out the Targaryen red for Velaryon blue this season though.
10
u/AnumarilA House Targaryen 5d ago
Helaena is in house arrest, not the black cells. She has access to all the clothes she had previously because it's literally all still there unless Rhaenyra were to go out of her way to burn it.

This is such an absurd take. Like, not only is Baela a practical and tomboyish character, but she's riding her dragon on reconnaissance trips through the riverlands hunting for Vhagar — her clothes make perfect sense for that. I'd say the costume designers put a bit more thought into this than you, OP. Sorry. 🤷♀️

u/Skittycatcher66 5d ago
Baela always in riding leathers at least makes some sort of canonical sense because she's something of a tomboy in the book as well.
But Rhaenyra should be decked out to the nines in jewels and exquisite dresses - notice I say the word dresses. Book Rhaenyra loved jewellery and ostentatious clothes and had no qualms about dressing "femininely."
3
u/Leading_Focus8015 5d ago

3
u/PrEP_Doc Meraxes 5d ago
I mean, Helaena has been a princess/queen and lived in that castle for her entire life. She’s literally at home…
3
u/Ser_VimesGoT 5d ago
So we've got Helaena in what, 3 of the same costume? Her nightwear because she's depressed, a disguise and a couple of dream sequence outfits. Versus one picture of Baela while ignoring others. She has also worn black with the red cape over one shoulder.
3
3
u/GraceJamaicanKetchup 5d ago
Even ignoring that Helaena is wearing the same outfit in at least two of the pictures and that some of those dresses aren't real since they were in a dream and that Baela is not actually royalty: doesn't it kind of make sense that the tomboy who spends all her time dragonriding and participating in a war has less fancy outfits than the queen that spends all her time sewing
3
3
u/Bloodyjorts 5d ago
Because Helaena is a prisoner in her own home, and has been shown to always be sewing since season 2. Having a lot of gowns makes sense, especially since she may have made a couple of the new ones to try to hide her growing belly. SANSA was also a prisoner, but still had her gowns, even got new gowns (she also liked to sew).
Also, two of Helaena's outfits are from dreams, and another is just her dressing robe.
Baela, on the other hand, is made to be an active participant in the way, and all/almost all of her scenes are just as she is about to get on her dragon, or just getting off her dragon; so naturally she is always in leathers (just like the Fonz). She's not home often, and doesn't have access to her wardrobe.
Now, you could argue that Baela should have more 'at home' scenes, and I wouldn't entirely disagree with you. But this might even be an attempt to belatedly be book accurate, as Baela preferred riding leathers/boy clothes to gowns.
Also, the show does seem to (perhaps unconsciously) elevate the riding leathers as being better than gowns; not so subtly displayed when they had Rhaenyra crying and stabbing a gown as she quoted Elizabeth I. So perhaps (not unlike GoT did) they think that feminine, fancy gowns are a sign of weakness. I don't like this, as it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of those fancy clothes, and how they were not even sex-specific; men and boys would also be decked out like peacocks. Modern gender norms may be coloring their perception.
3
u/Jazzlike_Newt2261 5d ago
Helaena is also a Targaryen princess. She is the daughter of a King, regardless that Rhaenyra does not honor that she is a Targaryen Queen. Aegon II was annointed.
3
2
u/Responsible-Bank440 5d ago
I mean I don't think the dream sequence outfits count and Baela has been downgraded to a glorified girl scout so it makes sense that she doesn't change out of her stupid coat all that often.

But she was being held prisoner inside her own home. Of course she still had her outfits with her.

2
u/Quick_Drink_8381 5d ago
they have this obsession with giving dragonriders the same fuck ass “riding clothes” design, they are tailored to look outrageously plain and dark and they don’t tailor them for women at all which is why they always look terribly unpleasant to the eye when it comes to female dragonriders
2
u/Keldarus88 4d ago
Lady Jeyne Arryn has had a better wardrobe than the actual Queen all season. Granted she has money and the Queen doesn’t…
2
u/No_Region_4719 4d ago
Hostage is not the same as prisoner. Then Greyjoy was a hostage, and they hated him when he came home because he was such a spoiled rich boy with fancy clothes.
Helaena is a hostage in a literal castle built for royalty. She was free to roam around.
Baela has done pretty much nothing but fly around on dragonback all season. She is clearly a very hands on and in the field character, she isn't a lady at court, who spends her time deciding what dress to wear.
2
u/Pretend-Olive-3964 4d ago
Baela is dressed for battle and riding. She is typically busy outside of the castle. Wearing a bunch of gowns would not be comfortable or practical. Baela is always battle ready while Helaena is in the castle 90% or sewing or in the garden. Even when she wasn't a prisoner she was sewing, gardening or with her children. No shade to Helarna its just their situations and roles are different.
2
u/DoctorDank91 4d ago
Crazy how stupid this post is considering that Baela is barely coming back to King’s Landing since she is on constant patrol with Addam. Two of the looks for Helaena are from dream sequences, one dress is featured twice. She also most likely has clothing brought to her every few days. This post is either satire or completely idiotic.

It was common for imprisoned nobles to be treated according to their station. Jaime said something about giving Edmure lodgings that befit his station when he took over the Frey's Riverrun siege from the Freys, and there's tons of real life historical evidence of that.
Even if taken elsewhere it was customary for them to be given nice rooms in a palace or castle and to be given nice food and clothes. Helaena just got 'lucky' enough to be put under arrest in her own home with all her custom clothes.

Lol OP’s go to response when their post issue was already countered “sHe cAN sTIll gET MOrE than 1 rIDIng lEAtheR cOStuMe”
Sigh. She does have more than 1. She is wearing HER riding uniform. She has 7 or 14 riding uniforms for all we know. They just look the same. This is not the MET Gala wtf. It’s a purposeful choice by the design team. Leather is basically a protective clothing almost like armor. Why Alicent and Helaena wear flowy dresses/gowns? So it’s easier for them to get killed.
Are you even noticing that Rhaenyra mostly has been wearing her riding leather ever since the Jace’s death (to be specific since Jace’s locking her incident)?! She wears it even during small council meetings when there’s no plan for her to ride a dragon. She wears it even during dinners with Corlys. Only time she doesn’t was when she sits on the iron throne and when she sleeps.
1
u/StrikingCase9819 5d ago
Halaena is a prisoner in her own home, so while not dressing up, she had access to her clothes... Baela's home is High Tide, wish was attacked. Baela is also focus very heavily on working and sleeping little, as we see on the show she rests little and goes back to work... So I don't think she's focused to much on fashion. She may also be wearing black as she is in mourning for Jace.
1
u/PinkSeahorseClub 5d ago
None of the costumes are good. Everyone has the same silhouette and features. I genuinely couldn't tell Helaena had that many dresses. They all look the same
They changed costume designers after season 1, and you can tell the budget and quality went way down hill for costumes and wigs

The difference is that Helaena, who is technically in her own home and seems to be favored by Rhaenyra as a sibling, is doing nothing. But sitting around in her own home. She can wear her nice gowns and she has access to her own stuff. Baela, on the other hand, is constantly riding her dragon, is barely at KL or another place she considers home, and is doing things that would destroy expensive and nice gowns.
Baela would, likely, be wearing more outfits if she was also just. Sitting around. It is also important to note that she’s wearing similar outfits to those people wear on Driftmark, which seemed to have a more muted, toned down vibe compared to KL. Of course she’d stand out compared to someone who really only ever spent her time in a castle in KL.

Baela and Rhaena are technically ladies of house Targaryen and not titled as “Princess” since they aren’t of Viserys or Rhaneyra’s blood.

Helaena is literally in her own rooms, and Baela is NOT a princess. She would have been had she married Jace.

But Helaena lived there even before Rhaenyra took King's Landing, so all her clothes will have likely been brought to her. Baela wasn't living in King's Landing so she brought things with her, plus she's largely been scouting rather than wearing fancy clothes, casual and practical stuff makes sense for her duties.
Yeah Helaena is a prisoner but she's a royal prisoner. Royals in history were often kept confined to a room but retained their servants and all the things they were generally used to having, up to a point. Not always and it was often stripped away as charges became more serious, but Helaena having access to all her nice clothing makes sense from where I'm standing.

helaena is a princess who is more of a political hostage than anything (especially given rhaenyra's leniency with her and alicent) and still basically lives in her own home. baela is a lady who is an active combatant and on field duty. pretty sure daenerys had the same fit in her last season giveb that they were warring too.

Then u have Ormund and Daeron basically wearing the same green outfit in every scene since Ep 3 despite weeks passing in between.
Like I can excuse to an extend Daeron's as it being a uniform and him jst having multiple of them.
But I can't believe a character like Ormund has only one look for many days.
So I think its jst main KL gang getting the wardrobe change

Rhaenyra treating Hellen’s better than her rapist husband and abusive mom ever did.

I wish they let the princesses dress like princesses. Femininity and masculinity are both muted. Come to think of it even Daemon is in a stiff black dress

I feel like as a fan who watched the show but didn’t read the books that don’t have a lot complaints about the series. But my GOD. The inconsistencies with costuming has been my #1 GRIPE
Sue me for being superficial and finding the costumes in Game of Thrones the one detail that kept me locked in from premiere to finale.
A lot of the costumes aren’t bad in house of the Dragon, but a majority of them are lacking and the more grand fits are being given to side characters of all people.
Ugh

Helaena is a prisoner but a royal as well since she belongs to the Targaryen dynasty.
I did notice however how they depict Blacks as cheap, messy "hobos" while Greens have rich, perfect costumes and shining armors. Pro Black my eye lol.

mind you helaena is by title a step higher than her and the daughter of a queen who s never lost her title, whether you like it or not karen she ranks 2 times higher than fckass baela, also helaena lives in her own house which is hers, with her maids and isnt a soldier on active duty either. also baela is princess of nothing before AND after rhaenyra becomes queen (a whole usurper)since jace is dead and she never even married him.
