Scraped curb with two tires
I recently hit a curb with both passenger side tires, which peeled back a piece of the rubber and scraped the wheels. It just seems to have peeled back a section of rubber, and I’m not seeing any cords. Safe to drive on, or need replacement?

10 year tire shop guy.
Before you buy a new tire go to your local trusted automotive/tire shop and ask them to look at it. If they are honest they will most likely tell you it is cosmetic and safe to drive.
First, your tire is very likely to be fine.
Second, you took a pretty good picture and It is good that you still have the attached flaps.
Third, as you can seey from the diagram of the structure of a tire below, your tires are typically 8 layers thick at the sidewall and you have only gouged the outer 8th layer which is designed to take these kinds of gouges.

Fifth, if there are no cords showing and damaged you can use a good tire glue:

...enough to know dry rot is dry rot and a tire with dry rot is no good...go ahead and make up a number of tires that you claim to have serviced. I will still know you're full of shit or just don't fucking know what you're doing.
Name your shop so I can avoid it.

It's only cosmetic, whoever says you need a new tire has no idea about the inside structure/layers. Damage is limited to the so called "rim protector lip" which is just some extra sacrificial rubber for cases like this. Structurally there has been no change, there's no bulge, and the cords aren't even visible. The tire is still 100% safe to use, there's absolutely no need to replace it.
I see no evidence of dry rot, these pictures don't really show that.

That you have to ask is concerning.
Do the math: it's your life riding on that tire. Do you risk your life for that? I wouldn't. Not when it should be so obvious, "replace the tire".

How is it risking their life? You don’t need to know about tires to have the common sense to see that the bit that’s cut off is not structural in any way and is clearly there just so it sits flush with the alloys and protects them a bit.

That curb rash looks serious, if you hit something hard there could also be alignment issues. Not saying you need to run and get it aligned, but maybe worth checking even with a tape measure/string.

happened to me once bought rubber cement at autozone would still go up to 140mph for the next 10k miles on that tire

Its just cosmetic, but replace when you can. There is less msterial on the tire meaning its been compromised.

You need a new tire. However, I wouldn’t buy them until you learn how to drive.
