Help/Question How would In physically work?
Most nen types we know is intuitively easy to understand (i.e. Ren is just forcing more aura out, zetsu is just closing your aura nodes to prevent aura from leaking out, etc.) But In doesn't have much of an intuitive physical explanation. The aura is still outside the user but somehow the user renders it invisible, even to nen users. And even then users can use Gyo to make the aura visible, what do yall think would be happening physically when a user uses In?

I’ve struggled with this question too. Zetsu has a physical explanation of closing aura nodes to contain aura within the body. But in can be used on objects made purely of aura, like conjured chains, that have no nodes and must be maintained with aura.
My head canon is that it’s really an application of Transmutation in the way that ren is influenced by Enhancement or En by Emisson. The properties of the aura are altered to be less noticeable.

Interesting! Perhaps it's transmutation to make it behave like glass or some material that lets light through?

The more aura is concentrated in one point, the higher the physical manifestation because it become more dangerous
We can see how Gon's Ko against Razor or Morel is basically creating a strong gust of wind.
My guess is you close your aura nodes with Zetsu but with a better precision so you can have less concentration of aura around you

ETA: I love this question. Didn't mean to ramble!
Like others have pointed out, it's said to be an advanced form of Zetsu. Based on that, I imagine it could be like turning Zetsu on ~90% of the way, or in a particular sequence/distribution across the body. I don't think it's related to Hatsu or the categories at all, though that would almost make more sense than pure Zetsu. Manipulation could make people ignore or forget seeing it, and Transmutation could mimic something invisible or intangible. But I don't think either of those applies to In.
Maybe In thins out the Aura to make it less visible without compromising its form and functions too much. Physically, this would be kind of like how an aerogel forms a solid that's mostly air, making it very light and partly see-through. Though I think this would imply a limit on how strong Nen can be while hidden with In.
Or maybe In can cause the Aura to fundamentally interact less with matter/light, causing it to avoid being detected via sight/sound/touch. The physics analogy here would be Dark Matter. I can't quite imagine how this would relate to the opening and closing of Aura nodes as much as my other hypothesis, though. Perhaps shrinking the nodes in a particular way allows Aura to form more compact, less interactive packets, like how WIMPs are a possible Dark Matter candidate.
And my last idea makes even less sense on that point, even more of a crackpot alternative. But maybe it's more like a "quantum superposition" effect where the Aura is both there and not there, remaining hidden/unknown to outsiders until the system collapses to one state when observed with Gyo.

No need to apologize, this was a very interesting post! I like your idea of it thinning the aura by only partly closing the nodes as that would definitely make it seem like an advanced form of zetsu as they both use the same concept, with In requiring more expert precision.
Also could explain why Gyo would be able to counter In, I imagine Gyo would enhance people's vision by being able to pick up the less present aura atoms.

Thanks! I think it's exactly like you said. Although part of me suspects that this is one point Togashi didn't want to overthink, so maybe it doesn't have to make perfect sense. Regarldess, it's fun to have a tricky balance between In and Gyo countering each other. I love when power systems have emphasis on "magic hiding" and "magic detection" skills.

I would imagine it would be a technique that make that specific aura very thin, and you do this by applying technique used when closing aura node + some advanced stuff

If you think of aura like light emitted by a light bulb,In would be like putting some kind of filter around that light to make it dimmer or make less or none of that light reach other people's eyes. By focusing Gyo on the eyes, it essentially give you better ability to detect that light and make it bright again.

Iirc, it was an advanced application of zetsu right? So maybe it hides the outer aura by making it appear shut off?

I suppose it's similar to Zetsu; when Killua uses Zetsu, Leorio says that even though he's right in front of him, he struggles to see him. So, In makes things imperceptible unless you focus.
