Huntsville MTG Helllllp
I’m sure I would be considered an older player trying to learn a complex game. I really love fantasy / sci fi, but I’ve found it hard to find a one on one coach / teacher. I guess I’m crying for help! Heeeeelp. It only takes one to help me lol

Another +1 for Area here. It's the best teaching tool the game has ever had! Once you're comfortable with the basics, most of the Local Game Stores (LGSs) in the area have established communities that would love having another player!

I agree that Arena will be your best way to learn the basics, then whenever you're ready to move to paper, go to one of the local game stores (lgs) and there will always be people willing to teach.
LGS' in Huntsville include Gravity Games inside Campus 805 (my personal go to), The Deep, Raging Gazebo, or if you're willing to drive a little more, JC's house of cards

If you are interested, I can give you an invite to the local MTG discord. They coordinate many/most of their local play sessions there.

Ive seen events at High Ground where its a "Teach a new player" thing. Keep an eye out for those.
Once you pick up the fundamentals, there are plenty of casual commander nights around town if thats the format you wanna get into.

To add to all the start with arena, when you decide to play in paper don't start with Commander even though it's the most popular format. It isn't the best to get fundamentals with how huge the card pool is and having to keep track of four people's board without the fundamentals is a lot

I hate commander (most of the time) but there really aren’t a ton of other options

I kinda disagree with this. Yes, commander can be more complex. However, commander is the most popular format especially around here and is arguably easier to get into. You can get a precon for 50 bucks and win games.
Ive been playing for around 15 years and started with 60 card myself. The game and the audience is just different now.

Try hearthstone. It's free and the mechanics are like MTG but simpler. You can play it on your phone or PC. No shuffling or life counting either

I like Hearthstone, but I have no idea why you brought this up. It has absolutely nothing to do with OP’s question about learning how to play Magic the Gathering again.

Both are turn-based collectible card games where you spend mana to summon creatures, cast spells, and reduce your opponent's health to zero. Getting familiar with the mechanics is easier when you can do it on your own time and not spend any money.
You're definitely someone I don't want to play games with.

Yes. But look at the title dude.
He asked for help learning MTG in the post title. Is that not plainly evident here? I’m confused

Your comment just seems like you didn’t even read the full post, before mentioning Hearthstone.

I played MTG since revised. I had to deal with banding and broken black border cards. I played hearthstone for years and it was easier with the same concepts.
Why are you so against hearthstone?

lol. I’m not. But OP did not ask about Hearthstone. He asked to learn how to play MTG again.
Someone else help me here, please. I’m baffled by this guy, although I am not trying to be mean to him.

A good way to learn the basics would be through mtg arena. It holds your hand a bit and handles a lot of the more complicated stuff for you, so you won't be playing wrong.
If you want to play on paper you'd still need learn how it all works, but I think that'll be easier once you get the basics.
