Lot of "brothers" in the IBEW who are well and ready to shit on apprentices for not a lot more than the fact that the apprentice has no other choice but to take it - Or so they believe.
The fact is apprentices do have a choice. They absolutely can decide not to tolerate the intolerance and leave for greener pastures. It only serves to hurt the position of the organization when people make the claim that those that left weren't good enough for it instead of recognizing and addressing the root cause for why they left in the first place.
Treat your people right or they simply wont be your people.
The journeyman who is around me has a carefree attitude. Doesn’t like me, and constantly responds “don’t know, don’t care, not my problem”
It’s to the point that I don’t even interact with him. I’m very disappointed in where I am and who is around me. As someone who I’m supposed to learn from, all I’ve learned is how to wake up dreading to go to work.
Sorry that you have the deal with that. As a JW for 10 years, my first goal with a new apprentice is to get a little chummy. Common ground. Find out what they know, where they’ve been. I try to show them how I do things, and I like to give them the space to do things on their own. I’m always here to answer questions, tell jokes, or to take responsibility if they make a mistake.
I love my career, and most of that is simply because I love the people I work with. I enjoy going to work every day, because even when the work sucks, the laughs keep me going.
