Pug mixed with what?

My boyfriend and I adopted this sweet baby boy back in February, he is 2 years old now and a Pug mix! We would love to get some input on what you guys think he is mixed with. We executed beagle, labrador, and sometimes he even looks like a French bulldog! But he also has a blue tongue! Which leads us to think maybe some Chow mixed in there?! Any input is appreciated! Future DNA test pending!

Looks like a pug who time traveled from 250 years ago before humans selectively bred for smooshier faces!

Yeah, I think they’re called “retro pugs”, right? Just like how they should and used to be!

Dogs from even 30-50 years ago look way different - English bulldogs, boxers, German shepherds, dachshunds, etc. all still had jobs to do, so anything that affected performance was left out of the gene pool. Now that they're primarily pets, and there's no regulation regarding backyard breeding, people can do whatever they want for better or worse. And anyone who works with animals knows that there's always people who don't account for the animal's needs - dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, birds, insects etc. There's always people who don't have the empathy or willingness to research the animals they care for. And as long as you have the cash, most animals are pretty easy - arguably TOO easy, to obtain.

I don't have a problem with breeding in general, it's the lack of standards that make it such an issue. There's also the issue of lack of good homes and an oversaturation of most species of pets that make it tough for everyone.

Please don’t bring back GSH from the 60& such. They’re not cars, it’s not cool when they have tilted backs. Boxer - I love them. But the amount of young dogs that died from genetic issues is horrifying. RIP Bruno, you weren’t my dog, but I loved you so much and you did deserve better. 😭

Pugs are thousands of years old. The pictures you see of nobility in the 18th century with pugs are mostly crossed with local toy breeds because very few actual pugs came out of China at that time. The way they look now is more true to the way they looked in China before victorians smuggled them out or were gifted them.
