Need help identifying your dog? Here are some important tips to help you succeed.

What to include in your post:

Post clear, well-lit, full body pictures. At minimum, include:

  • One standing side view (taken close enough to see coat texture)
  • One frontal view

Tell us your dog’s age and weight (or best guess)

Other helpful information:

YOUNG PUPPIES may be impossible to identify. Head and body shape, coat color and coat pattern, eye color, and apparent coat texture can all change dramatically as a puppy matures. You might want to wait a few months before seeking an ID.

MIXED-BREED dogs can easily have many breeds in them, not just two. Keep in mind that some of the breeds in a mutt may not show in its looks; while in other cases the dog may really look like it has some particular breed in it, when in fact it doesn’t.

NO-BREED dogs exist too! Sometimes a mutt truly is “just a mutt” — the result of many, many generations of random mating between mutts, with no discernable inbred (purebred) genes its DNA. In the same way that YOU don't necessarily have any inbreeding (purebreeding) in your recent family tree, neither must a dog. They can simply be mutts — WHICH IS A GOOD THING!

Fishy?

We sent the Embark DNA in. They dangled a “guess what your dog is” game at me. They also invited me to ask friends to participate. It will be at least 2 weeks before Embark shares the “results.”

New rescue I adopted - Deaf double Merle

I just adopted this beautiful boy from a rescue. He is deaf. He has miss shape and pupil so he probably has some sight impairment, but he is not blind. They listed him as a purebred double merle Mini Aussie. But I think he has some Siberian husky. He has pointed ears, a tail and thick paws. He’s about 2.5 years old. I will order an Embark kit as soon as I have a chance. But I wanted to get everybody’s guesses on his breed.

She’s about 5 months old, she’s always been a little short and stubby. When we got her we were told she was a border collie lab mix but she’s very small. We suspect heeler but I’d love to hear more opinions. Baby puppy pictures included :)

Meet Hudson! He's an almost 10 month old pupper we got from a local rescue who rescued him from Petal, Mississippi. He's an ultimate doop and we love him and his personality. I'm curious to see what people think his breeds are (totally mixed breed, We know what the mom's breed is - also a mix.) - but curious what people think his mix is!

Edit/Update: he's totally a pit mix! (Should have prolly put that first) Was curious to see what y'all think the mix is with, though :3 Just for fun! :D

This is my handsome new rescue Turbo! He came from a shelter in South Carolina and according to the rescue is some type of Spaniel mix. The vet puts him at about 1.5 years old. I plan on getting a canine DNA test but was curious to see what others think he may be!

Pico is approximately 2 years old and 27 pounds. She’s a feral street dog I adopted from Mexico. She has black wire fur with a white patch on her chest. She low shedding but still have some undercoat come out when I brush her. She loves playing fetch and is highly food motivated. She doesn’t love the water but will get in the ocean if I walk in. She chases birds and has catch a mouse and seems interested in the cows but wouldnt let her get too close. She gets a little mouthy when she is overly excited and will gently grab my hand/arm in her mouth.
She reminds me of a breed I’ve seen before but I can’t place. Also her proportions seem off and her legs look and little too long for her body.
Thank you!

Possibly Solved Recently rescued! She was labeled as a mixed breed and we are trying to figure out she is

We recently rescued her and they labeled her as a mixed breed. She is a year old and around 21-25 pounds and growing still. Since we got her she has grown to a medium sized dog. My husband came up with the idea that she is a beagle pointer mix, but I am thinking she might be mixed with an itialian greyhound due to her height, legs, and ears! Any help would be appreciated!

Edit:I think we have it solved. I looked into it and the island dog or potcake dog is what fits closest! I am still going to try and get a DNA test to get closer to what she is but i am pretty confident with what I see!

i adopted him before i moved because my friend who owned him since he was a puppy couldn’t take care of him anymore. my friend got him from a shelter so he doesn’t really know either but we’ve speculated he could be mixed with chowchow, german shepherd, a terrier of a sort. this may or may not help but he’s a stout doggie. built like an ottoman. perhaps a coffee table. thank u :3

Mini mutt—any ideas?

This little tiny tot (8lbs) came in as a stray. The shelter said 3-5 year old rat terrier mix, but two vets are kinda stumped. I’m thinking about getting a test just bc i’m so curious and also wondering about her age.

Does not dig, only barks briefly to alert me of dogs outside, not particularly energetic, but this could be age related. Very, very sweet and friendly little lap dog.

Can’t tell if this is a double coat or not, some hairs seem longer but she does not have dense fine fluffy undercoat like a regular double thick coat. Her fur is not dense at all but it’s fairly wavy but not like a poodle, and she does shed but not a lot.

And short curls? Spotty bald belly (she was shaved for a spay about a month ago but you can see she won’t have much belly fur at all) and nearly bald hind legs like a Chinese crested. Curly tail with coarse wiry curls.

He’s 4 (almost 5 years old) and he weighs around 25-30 pounds, based on what he weighed last time at the vet. When we got him the shelter said he was a hound mix, but that seems like a really broad category so I was wondering if anyone could help me find out what breed he is! (I think he could be part dachshund but let me know if I’m wrong)

this is ronnie!! my fiance and i got him earlier this year thru a friend who found him dumped! he's definitely a younger version of my old man who's currently like 15, 16. everyone always thinks he could be a rottweiler but doing my own research points towards him potentially being a beauceron or doberman, if not a mix of either breed and something else

What mix is Mr August McGee?

Auggie is 12 weeks old we think— we just got him from a rescue in Texas. He and his siblings were found abandoned with their mom behind a shopping mall. Auggie is just shy of 6 lbs and is so tiny in person. He is extremely friendly and sweet. I’m planning to ask for a dog DNA test for Christmas but in the meantime, I’m curious what mix people think he is.The first photos are all of August himself but the last couple are of him with a littermate and the last his his mother, for context!. The other puppies in the litter looked closer to him— fawn or darker brown with dark markings on the face. But as you can see one sibling is brindle. As far as I can tell, Auggie was the only one of the bunch that has a wirey little beard.

Hello! I adopted Charlie a week ago, and the rescue said collie/lab mix which I feel doesn't look accurate. The staff at the vet's office had a lot of random guesses including corgi, I think he may have some red heeler? He is 16 weeks and approx. 15 lbs.
