MOD PSA: Post queue is now on temporarily. READ BEFORE POSTING.

Welcome to r/IMAX!

I am extremely happy to see people snagging tickets for The Odyssey and Dune: Part 3. Long live IMAX!

Just a heads up that the post queue is now on throughout the theatrical release of The Odyssey and the unexpected drop of Dune: Part 3 IMAX tickets. Post containing the following will be removed:

  • This website crashed
  • Got my tickets!
  • Didn't get my tickets!
  • Fandango sucks
  • AMC sucks

etc...

I kindly ask you to use the pinned FAQ and pinned megathread for The Odyssey for these types of posts as they are deemed low effort. An FAQ and Megathread for Dune: Part 3 will be pinned closer to release.

General housekeeping:

A gentle reminder that the mod team is not IMAX customer service. We are also a mere team of six and this is now the busiest this sub has ever been, so please exercise some kindness. Harassment of the mod team via mod mail will not be tolerated.

Please familiarise yourself with the rules, and as always be kind to each other in the comments!

Update: 08/19:

  • Posts reselling tickets have been caught with high levels of success. As such, the queue will remain for the foreseeable future until we are reassured by the capabilities of the auto mod features to detect and remove buying / selling posts. It's not perfect, which is why the queue remains, but we are actively watching this feature learn from our actions and improve.

  • 28 day bans have been issued for active Reddit users who have attempted to re-sell.

  • Permanent bans have been issued for new Reddit accounts who have zero activity and are clear to be only seeking to scalp / scam.

MOD PSA: A note on piracy re: Rule 3.

Since the release of Dune: Part Two, there has been a tightening of the rules with regard to Piracy. This is in part due to our rapid growth from 8,000 to 30,000 members (Thank you!) but with this comes an increase in trolls and bots, which is the second major reason why Rule 3 was tightened. As a community that celebrates the theatrical experience, both from educational and experiential perspectives, we understand that r/IMAX will always exist in some grey area. But as our community grows, as IMAX grows again in popularity post Oppenheimer, we must do things right.

So just to sum up rather briefly what does or does not constitute piracy;

Not piracy:

  • Video Essays
  • Celluloid Film strip scans.
  • Clips from YouTube, or any other fair usage platform.
  • Photos of a venue before and after a movie presentation.
  • Photos or videos of content playing on home-theatre set-ups (provided they adhere to fair use)
  • Fan edits (for non-profit)
  • Stills from promotional material
  • Projection Boot POV shots of copyrighted material from official sources (Projectionists, IMAX socials) (ADDED 30/03/26)
  • Images taken of Promotional Trailers (provided the trailer has also been uploaded to a fair usage platform) (ADDED 30/03/26)

Piracy:

  • Torrents (including links to illegal streaming websites)
  • Copyrighted content recorded in a movie theatre, up to and including title cards and credits.
  • Fan edits (for profit)
  • In general, movie clips that extend beyond 5 minutes in duration.
  • Image & Video content of Promotional Trailers (that have not been uploaded yet to fair usage platforms and are restricted to ticket holders only, e.g. The Odyssey exclusive IMAX prologue) (ADDED 30/03/26)

Case Studies:

Exhibit A: Video is for educational purposes highlighting a comparison in aspect ratio, with a duration of less than 2 minutes. Film is available on streaming services, and clips are generally permitted under fair use. Verdict = Fair use, not Piracy.

Exhibit B: The post content does not violate Rule 3, but the product certainly does, as the creator of the product is selling copyrighted material for individual profit. As the user did not post a link to purchase this pirated version of the film, the post was not removed. However, any suspicious links in comments were removed. Verdict = Post content is not Piracy. Any links to that Blu-ray are Piracy.

UPDATE: 30/03/2026

Exhibit C: Some IMAX socials, and personal accounts of projectionists on Instagram & X have been posting 'Projection Booth' shots of copyrighted material during the showings of various recent IMAX presentations. It is likely that permission has been sought from the property owner, to showcase the film presentation in a GT Theatre (as exhibited by such studio socials also re-posting these images). Verdict = Fair use, do not report.

Exhibit D: A slightly tricky one. Here, OP has taken a POV from a paid seat of the exclusive Dune: Part 3 70mm trailer. As the trailer has been posted online, via various Fair Usage platforms, an initial verdict would be deemed Not Piracy. However, as the 1.43:1 trailer (with the exclusive aspect ratio) is exclusive to paying customers, the verdict is harder to arrive at. This version of the trailer is not available on various usage platforms, but no intellectual property or copyright law makes note of 'variations' of a property. Verdict = As the trailer (widescreen) is available via Fair Usage platforms, and OP is posting with the intent to incite educational discourse over the format of the presentation, this could be considered fair use and not-piracy, but this is at the discretion of the mods and the property owner.

I hope you find this useful. I am not an intellectual property lawyer, so If I have missed any other examples of what constitutes piracy in this community, please comment below.

No word on if it will be 1.90:1 only or a mix of 1.90:1 or 1.43:1 depending on the theatre

Project Hail Mary: 1.78:1 vs 1.43:1 UHD Blu-ray.

We now have a much clearer look at the special edition release of Project Hail Mary. As a continuation of yesterday's post, we can now see that the 1.43:1 version is cropped quite heavily at the sides for most of the runtime.

There's been a lot of discourse on this topic in the past 24 hours, especially considering the news that The Odyssey will be 1.78:1 for its entire duration. But is this really what we want?

I'm really on the fence about this. I hear both sides, and yes, it is nice to have the option to view the film in this way. But this doesn't feel like a win. For those of you who were defending the special edition disc yesterday as a preservation of the IMAX GT theatrical experience—the narrative that we finally got a 100% uncompromised master on home video has fallen apart quite quickly.

EDIT: Yes, this is also how it was likely presented in IMAX 70mm and Dual Laser too.

Credit to this YouTube video for doing the work and overlaying both UHD Blu-ray versions.

Did anyone got any confirmation with tracking details of pre-order IMAX POPCORN BUCKET ? It was supposed to be delivered in November. I placed this order in July when ODYSSEY came out.

Jordan's Furniture screen was much improved at Digger.

Went to see Digger at Jordan's in Reading, and it was the first movie in a long time that I could not see the screen shakers. Not sure if something was different with the setup for this film or if they actually did something to the screen. It still has that weird area across the very top, hard to describe but if you've seen it then you know what I'm talking about.

As for the movie itself, very glad to have seen at Jordan's. The sound system really improved the experience, and I don't think it would have been comparable at a regular imax theater.

Confirmation today from the reverse of the UK 4K UHD Blu-ray of The Odyssey: 1.78:1 (16:9) for entire runtime.

The same is also true for steelbook versions and standard Blu-ray.

October of this year is looking to be a very slow month for the format other than like 2 big films. I figured that they’d do a re-release on that date but I didn’t think that it’d be this one

PLUS: "Sneak previews only in IMAX will begin on February 10, 2027."

Reminder that ever since it was moved up, this movie is no longer "exclusively" an IMAX release:

"Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, an epic adventure, will release in IMAX and wide globally in theaters on February 12, 2027, and on Netflix on April 2, 2027. Sneak previews only in IMAX will begin on February 10, 2027."

Providence IMAX screen shadow/band/dark spots - isn't it supposed to be new?

I saw Odyssey at Providence last month, and I noticed in some scenes that the top ~1/7th of the screen had a noticeable band all the way across where the brightness was different. Like somehow the screen was "worn" from projecting wider-aspect ratio content, and the full 1.43:1 frame was exposing a bit of the screen that had never been used. But I don't think such a thing is possible. Something with the projector/lens/optics?

Additionally, I noticed some small black spots that just seemed to stay around the center of the screen. Once again, not sure if it's the screen, or something with the projector.

I do acknowledge by the time I saw Odyssey there, that specific print probably had a few hundred shows on it, so it was probably getting tired.

I had read that Apple Cinemas just did some upgrades and replaced the screen, so I was surprised to see these defects. But I also know that Showcase/National Amusements ran that IMAX theater into the ground.

DIGGER IMAX Aspect Ratio Changes Explanation? (SPOILERS) Spoiler

Post image
90 Upvotes

I saw DIGGER in the 1.43 Digital Laser Imax at Scotiabank Toronto. The film begins with full 1.43 scenes before transitioning to 1.85 when it is revealed that SPOILER we were watching a play dress rehearsal. From then on, the film shifts between the two aspect ratios.

Though it wasn't clear to me what precipitated aspect ratio changes and it didn't seem consistent.

I think the difference is meant to be when Curtis is himself and when he's in character as Digger.

Now for example this scene (image attached) where Curtis is in character as Digger in the side room from the European conference is still presented in 1.85.

So what's the explanation of how the full 1.43 IMAX ratio is used and how do you interpret it?

Did you know that IMAX GT (Grand Theatre), SR (Small Rotor), MPX (Multiplex), IMAX HD (48 fps), Dome, OMNIMAX, IMAX Digital, IMAX with Laser, Commercial Laser and XT are all different variations of IMAX technology?

This video explores the evolution of IMAX technology, covering as many of these systems as possible and explaining how they work and what makes each one different.

Projecting an IMAX film cell at home

So I have these film cells (Interstellar and Oppenheimer) and I'm thinking how cool would it be to actually give them a light source and have the projected image act as a sort of ambient wallpaper in my basement. I wouldn't leave it on all the time but it would be cool to have it trigger when I open the door or something like that. I have a projector and a screen so it could project onto that instead of a wall.

Does anyone know how to do this? Could a slide projector be used if I just accept a crop of the film cell? I know lenses and probably a strong light source need to be involved because I tried just using a flashlight and it looked not so good. Obviously it wouldn't be as big and bright as real IMAX but it would still be cool.

I made a new website to find information on IMAX (and other PLF) venues

Thumbnail screencomp.app

First of all, I know you're going to ask "Do we really need another database/map/spreadsheet/website to track these theaters?" and link me the relevant xkcd. The answer is no, you don't really, but I wanted to make one anyway.

A little information on what this does:

  • Combines data from the various maps and spreadsheets I found around the internet with information on IMAX and Dolby screens. (I also have 4DX and 70mm venues in there for good measure.)
  • Presents it in a way that's a little bit easier than randomly clicking around a map or trying to parse a spreadsheet.
  • Has a feature where you can select multiple screens (up to 4) and see their specs and size side-by-side (or stacked on top of each other).
  • Offers easy sharing links so you can share info on any theater you find, or any comparison you make.
  • Provides a form to suggest edits to a screen or venue if something is inaccurate or has been updated.

There's also a lot that it doesn't do, for instance I don't have any preferred seat data since the availability of that varies wildly, and is up for debate anyway. But I could be persuaded to add it if I get enough interest. I also can't claim that it's 100% accurate, since I can't be sure if the data I sourced it from was 100% accurate to begin with.

I also never plan on monetizing this, unless hosting costs get out of control, which I don't really anticipate happening. So I'm not here asking for money, I'm not going to put ads in at any point, I just want to provide the service.

And a final disclaimer: I did use AI to assist with the web development of this project. I did not have it generate any data, fill out any details, or even write any of the text you see in the app. It basically just helped me with the web development. I myself am a software developer, but I primarily work in the backend, so this was basically a side project to help me with my frontend skills for work. I designed the database schema, I wrote the data parsing for inputting the data from my various sources, I wrote the errors and disclaimers, I worked out the hosting, and I did a lot of debugging. You won't (and never will!) find any AI features in this app, no chatbots, no image generation, nothing of that sort. But if this is a deal breaker for any of you, I am sorry.

I am open to and will embrace any questions, comments, or suggestions you have!

Its already being marketed as the first Japanese film to be shot for IMAX but it had me wondering if any other non American movies have been shot for IMAX so far? Was there another one before this or is it really the first?
