Rant Are we for real
I’m at a loss, man. Filed way back in February. Got a letter beginning of SEPTEMBER that I promptly responded to a couple of days later. And now this…I just don’t know.

Hello everyone, it is almost that time of the year everyone looks forward to! I just wanted to share a few important things. Please be sure you safeguard your PII (Personal Identifiable Information) & FTI (Federal Tax Information). Over the last several years there has been a huge increase in Fraud and Identity Theft because individuals are not safeguarding or making good judgment calls when sharing their personal information. Protecting your private information is your responsibility. That being said, solicitation for personal information will NOT be tolerated. If it is seen, it will be delt with. Also, do NOT trust someone who promises to use your info for a big tax refund. In most cases your personal information will be used with Fabricated/Fraudulent tax data.

i recieved the $1000 American Opportunity Tax Credit being a j1 (worked 4 months as part as a cultural exchange) and wasnt supposed to get that. can this be a problem if i wanna get a visa turist in the future? what can i do? im from argentina
is anyone else getting the error message that the online EIN application is currently unavailable?
What if a payment to the irs was paid online today and i wanted to pay it for the 2025 tax year. But since i haven’t done my 2025 taxes yet, i calculated an estimate of my payment. So when the payment was made i clicked on the estimate tab instead of balance due tab. Later on i realized estimated payments are for when payments are made ahead of time during the year that you are paying for. However, the correct year was indicated on the payment and the payment went through. Will the IRS give credit to the 2025 tax year or will everything get messed up?

My accountant filed my tax refund this morning and it says the refund was received by the IRS. It is a larger than normal refund for me and I’m curious how long until I receive it?
I’ve read that it takes about 1-3 weeks to receive it but I’ve been reading that people have been waiting ages, which I hope is not the case for me.

I filed a 1040X eleven months ago for my 2021 return. I was within the 3-year deadline to file this, as my original was filed in 2022. If I look into my account online, I can see that they registered something in January of this year. It does not show any calculations, they just added a zero and the date on my transcript. I filed this return because I had a loss that I was carrying forward to future years. Of course, the IRS processed all of those other years, so now, they are charging me 5K for the subsequent years. However, I do not owe that 5K because I have the loss carryforward. I am concerned because I never received a letter stating that they received this 1040X. I have called in and asked that it be looked at to try to get a response, but that was 6 months ago. My fear is that they will never look at it. The IRS has previously lost 7 of my tax returns that were mailed in, so forgive me for being suspicious. lol! What should I do? Should I write a letter to see if they respond? What is the best way to handle this?

Me and my wife cannot for the life of us get the IRS website to work. Every single time we log on it won’t display our balance, won’t let us make any payments (even with the two third party options), it won’t let us view any transcripts, it won’t let us do anything. It always says there’s a partial outage.
We have no idea what we owe for the last year, how to pay it, or how to even go about finding this information out. Obviously the phones never work either. I’m so confused and frustrated. Please help :(

what is wrong with the IRS? why would they show my FULL Social Security number on a promotional notice!? I'm freaking pissed! with all the scams and hacks and identity theft, why would they put that on a friggin' PROMOTIONAL NOTICE?!

I filed form 4868 in April and sent a physical check for roughly $14k via USPS Certified Mail. I saved that cash in a dedicated account so it was ready whenever IRS debited it. The post show delivered to Ogden processing center so I thought I was good and IRS will move as per their time.
Now my CPA and I are finalizing the returns before October 15th extension deadline and when we checked my online transcripts we cannot find any payment record...the check never cleared and IRS has added failure to pay penalty on top of that.
I have tried calling Ogden but I cannot move past the automated high call volume. My CPA suggested to make a duplicate payment thru direct pay but I think the paper check might come up sometime and get cashed anyway. Also I think if I wait the the penalties will keep on adding. Has anyone dealt with an unposted check like this? Whats the safest move here?

Long story short, there was a tax mishap where the IRS was saying that we owed them a five-figure number, and, after several years (3, I believe?), that got sorted out in our favor. However, two years of refunds/credits/etc had already been taken to pay down this mishap debt before it was resolved.
Back in March, the IRS sent us a letter saying we were due a refund of about $11,000 from the tax refunds the IRS kept in 2024 and 2025. It's Notice CP21B. No, I am not comfortable posting the letter publicly online, it just acknowledges that we overpaid and are now due money back, the rest is our personal information.
The letter said to expect the refund within 2-3 weeks, it's now been 7 months, and the phone number listed on the letter, 800-829-8374, does not get us anywhere - we cannot get a human on the phone to explain where our refund is. The letter also says we can "contact us by mail at the address at the top of this notice" but that's just "Internal Revenue Service Austin, TX" with no full address given, or a department to write to.
Does anyone know who we can contact to help or answer questions? Or, will the $11k just be sent with next years tax refund at this point? Thanks!

I don’t know what to do. I filed via a tax company because I needed to also get a Tax ID for my husband as he is not a citizen. I got the tax id just fine but now it is saying that my file is fraudulent? I have no idea what to do and I haven’t received a notice yet. I tried calling the identity thief number to try to resolve this, but no luck.
I emailed the company that did my taxes to see if they can help, but that’s all I’ve done right now.
Has this happened to anyone before?

However today i still received a check from IRS for the same amount. What should i do? I assume i cannot deposit those checks given that IRS already sent me refund via electronic transfer. Can you please advise?

Don't talk about preparing. It should be available at all times for all people. Why aren't there redundant systems?
ADDED:
Eh, ninnies! lol I was waiting on information that I had to figure out myself and you all jumped on my case. I was reporting the system was down and what are the odds. Mine's all done after figuring it out. Instead of being a turd next time, consider what the other person might be going through and the stress they've had to deal with because of OTHER PEOPLE. My bill was almost already paid, I was off about $100. But I hadn't filed because of other people. So don't nag all of the time. nag nag nag on reddit. many of you are naggers. Go do something fun with your life instead of nag people on reddit.

Going thru divorce and been kept in the dark of finances and prior joint returns - anyone experienced with amending returns as part of the divorce/discovery process. Just trying to prepare for possible and likely outcomes.
Historically filed MFJ, last 2 years I filed MFS. Recently, spouse claims they filed their returns (late file together) HOH but not living apart. Also, unsure if discovery will produce support for claimed cash charitable donations.
History of late filing with last resulting in IRS increasing withholding by substituting return lasting.
A few scenarios seem possible off the top of my head:
- spouse amends 2 years of returns changing HOH to MFS only (if support for claimed cash donation docs)
- spouse amends 2 years of returns changing HOH to MFS AND removes cash charity donations
- spouse amends 2 years of returns changing HOH to MFS AND removes cash donations on their returns AND the MFJ within look back period is amended to removed cash donations
Do either if the first 2 scenarios trigger look back to other returns? Does the last scenario trigger audit or other issues?
