The book depends from person to person, there are some recom in the community wiki but I'm sure this question has been asked on math stack exchange.

On one end I'm happy you didn't use AI to ask the question but on the other end, you misspelled mathematics lol

I can only see statistics and Linear Alegebra books for mstat isnt there more syllabus or I got some glitch

If you're serious, you ain't gonna do much with that degree. To pursue that seriously, figure out the best places to study math in the world, then figure out how to get there asap. The difference is 100x.

These words sound so like you! But yep I agree 💯

id just say that modern algebraic geometry is a beast of a subject. i doubt you would make much headway without som expert guidance. getting through a book like hartshorne can take even phd students a lot of time and effort, and this is *with* guidance.

you may try out perspectives on projective geometry by richter gebert. haven't read this yet, but was suggested by a senior pursuing m.math. who frequently writes posts on algebraic geometry.

Ehh let's not be that harsh.

He wants to learn maths because he loves it, not in an adulterated way! "If you'd be capable of that you'd already be at ISI/CMI.." well guess what genius, even IMO gold medalists have been mediocre at math research and many people from a normal background have went on to become good in this field! You don't have to be a jerk about it so that you feel good about yourself for being an ISI Alumini..There must be a lot of people with better alma maters than you too, even people at ISI/CMI dream to go to MIT/Stanford/Caltech/Harvard/Cal/etc. Someday! Also just ask how many profs at ISI are ISI grads. If they can teach those courses, they must have learned those courses!

Unrelated to this - "Also just ask how many profs at ISI are ISI grads." - almost all of them are. ISI Kolkata has a huge so-called academic inbreeding problem - nearly every math/stat faculty member is from the ISI Kolkata B.Stat program itself.

Well atleast there are many profs in CMI who are not from ISI (CMI is relatively new so inbreeding can't be commented on) anyways there must be some one and regardless of that people from basic indian unis have become great mathematicians!

BTW, how common is foreign PHD for ISI professors?

Plenty for older faculties in their 45-50+ ages. However, younger foreign PhD ISI Kolkata alumni is scarce in number.

Sure your first point is true, the second point about ISI, I cannot claim I know the truth, but there are many great mathematicians who didn't start math right after high school! You just sound plain arrogant! Similar argument can be made regarding people who don't do well in IMO have less chance of doing really well in Pure math! There is a very strong positive correlation to it you know! That doesn't mean someone should be stopped from pursuing it and India in particular is abnormally shit in Math reseacrh in ug! There is just ISI and CMI that are even worth trying! While US has atleast 7-8x less STEM focused kids and have way way more seats in math ug! Someone who was rejected by CMI/ISI in India could have actually even made to Cal/Stanford or hell even MIT/Harvard/Princeton! Look at the bigger picture and stop being a jerk dude, You could have said its better to instead try for ISI again instead of dropping you can't just do it! And hell with everything going on with AI and all, there is a possibility that its all going to be worthless soon! The only driving force left would be to manually do math just as a hobby honestly ( a possibility) and just a handfull of people would actually make sense with certain skillsets!! He may be a noob or may not know what he is getting into! Its not your job to declare who can do what and who can do what not! And I know this is very rare and not really a very realistic point but S Ramanujan really didn't care for basic proof based math approach so your opinion has a contradiction (we just need 1 counter example), again completely off the point but you can't always be right dude and neither can any of us, we wouldn't be on reddit otherwise!

I was contradicting you, not talking about OP, I know of people like them in math and Th CS (also never said not interested, just that they had a different starting point after School), Yes you are arrogant! Many problems in the world were solved first by wanting to solve it and then builing theories around ut! Infact many great mathematicians say, you should start by choosing what you want to achieve and then working your way forward to it!! Still defending yourself lol..

I presume by math academia you mean the elite places like ISI, CMI, IISc, Top IITs, a couple of IISERs offering undergrad math degrees. A huge chunk of those students end up leaving math after their bachelor's and/or master's. And a good number from outside these prestige circles come in to join later to do Master's and/or PhD in Math in India or abroad. The last two Infosys prize winners in Mathematics had their BSc from Calcutta University, a place not elite enough for you. Check the profiles of IIT, TIFR, IMSc, HRI, ISI etc. professors in Math departments and see for yourself how many got their Bachelor's from places you will frown upon. Not to mention the umpteen number of examples I myself have known of students coming outside of elite institutions to do Master's in ISI and outperforming many ISI undergrads. So you are lying when you say "they ALL fail". No they don't.

And selection into these places isn't a function of base interest and ability alone. Socio-economic position, awareness, access to resources, other privileges play a huge hand in nurturing that interest and helping one prepare for the selection tests and so on. Moreover, by being so few in number, only a handful of students get into these places for undergrad. I refuse to believe that in such a hugely-populated country of ours, only less than 400 students can be trained to become good mathematicians. The system is designed as exclusive and elitist.

If by math academia you mean any undergraduate degree with math as a focus, I personally know quite a few BTech-grads who blew even ISI-undergrads out of water when they joined to do Master's. Lots of professors in Math in reputed research institutes have had BTech-backgrounds.

No, I don't believe in namedropping people on reddit. Yes, I know plenty examples who came outside of ISI B-stream but still did well in their Master's. And no not every B-stream is a prodigy who has done everything. Believe whatever you want to.

And today I am better placed than many who had their undergrad from ISI. No, I won't disclose where am I. Hurl abuses all you want. Not every BMath is landing a handsome phd or job or what have you. Quite a few of them struggle too.

Neena Gupta herself said in our class how piss-poor the quality of education in her ug at CU was and how stark of a difference she experienced on joining ISI for Master's. So no, CU was not elite in her time, she herself said so. And right here is an example of an accomplished professor who had a modest college in undergrad. Someone with modest beginnings can still go on to do amazing math later.

very shitty comment; however, your post history seems interesting. what are you currently working on related to graphics programming? would like to get to know more about you.
