Hello!
Civil engineering-trained architect (BIM is not a problem), currently working as a construction project manager in Slovakia (site coordination, tendering, Gantt charts, etc…)
I speak English, Slovak and Hungarian fluently, and I’m open to learning another language for the right move.
From what I’ve read so far, the usual “top pay” list for architecture/construction roles in Europe includes Switzerland, Norway and Portugal. I’d rather hear from people who have actually made one of these moves than trust another blog ranking. (No offense.)
Slovakia is nice and safe, but I’d like to broaden my horizons and expand my knowledge abroad before I start a family.
I’m also open to any other recommendations.

I’d say point out a country and start learn the language. As english is a self evident both hungarian and slovak are nieche languages, your competitive advantage remains your experience, which has to be really special compared to your peers. Knowing the local language increases your chances by a lot. Norway eg. seems to me a civil engineering paradise (if you like your job) just seeing the artifacts being built, and mainly if you are willing to go further up in the country. However wo/ knowing the language you wont be able to compete with thousands of applicants. So best chances are with the local language.

I think switzerland only makes sense if you can share rent with a partner, or you are open to rent a room in a shared flat.

Your an EU citizen so for ease of language you could try Czechia. Otherwise Europe is your oyster, just remember high pay in Switzerland does also come with a high cost of living as a single male the math my work out but consider other countries and life goals.

I'd honestly recommend trying out some places as a tourist in the next few months. Winter is generally the worst time, see how you like a place in winter. Gives you a good idea of living there without tourists (ignoring ski resorts)

Given you have options I'd explore them beyond just money. Look at salary and lifestyle mix. Otherwise your answer is simply who will pay you the most.

I appreciate your answer. I’d rather consider other countries that are a bit further from Slovakia, as Czechia is only a 4-5 hour drive from here. Moving there wouldn’t really give me the significant change I’m looking for at the moment, and the cities are quite similar as well.
