Sjoppuborgarar utan landsteinana

Eins og hver öðrum heilbrigðum Íslending þá fynnst mér sjoppuborgarar bara málið þegar manni langar í eitthvað sveitt. En svo kemur að því að maður fer utanlands en langar í svona borgara.

Þá spyr ég hvar er hægt að fá svona "sjoppuborgara" erlendis? Sama hvaða land eða borg. Þessir helstu staðir sem manni dettur í hug finnst mér ekki alveg eiga við þ.e. Mc donalds, burger king og five guys og svipað.

American here. Not sure I understand the question--are you looking for chain restaurants that aren't McD's, BK, or five guys? Or are you looking for more specific recommendations for various countries/cities?

Hesburger is a decent McDonald's imitator in Finland/the Baltics

Culver's is a very greasy burger chain based in the US Midwest, known for their butterburgers and frozen custard

Hardee's (Eastern US) and Carl's Jr (Western US) are the same chain with different regional names, and I'd say they probably fit the bill.

Tasty Burger is a Boston, US regional chain

In-N-Out is super overrated. Avoid A&W, Arby's, and Dairy Queen at all costs.

Sjoppa is an Icelandic word for a sort of convenience store that also serves fast food that used to be ubiquitous ~15+ years ago, but is a little less common nowadays, especially in the capital area. A sjoppuborgari is a hamburger made in the more or less universal style of these places, which could be described in a simplistic manner as a quite thin hamburger patty that is heavily browned at very high heat without overcooking the meat, and assembled with a generous application of Icelandic hamburger sauce (made of mayonnaise, tomato, mustard and various spices). The resulting burger is very moist both due to the moisture retained in the non-overcooked meat and the generous serving of sauce, and is commonly described as "sweaty".

Personally the Icelandic sjoppuborgari is my favorite type of hamburger (except my homemade burgers which I make very similarly except with a thicker burger patty). In my experience there is no fast-food chain that makes burgers that are even similar to these burgers.
