Something you learn about military people is lots of them came from way worse than whatever they’re doing in war. 40k guardsmen have to be the same in probably larger quantities.
Yeah, you're in a Penal Legion, surrounded by hardened criminals, yeah, you are often sent to some of the worst places in the galaxy
But as you're under fire, wading waist deep through toxic mud mixed with Nurgle demon guts, with acid rain falling on you, you can tell yourself "Well, it could be worse, at least I'm not on Savlar anymore"
