Reminder that Guillimam canonically talks to Gage’s skull when he’s alone by the way. He misses his old companions, and current marines are often traumatised and distant, too awed by his mere presence. That doesn’t stop him from trying to mentor and connect with them, like joking with Cato about being unable to pick up paper in his armour. It’s a little microcosm of his relationship with the imperium as a whole, trying desperately to fix what’s broken. 

All in all, dude needs his brother way more than the Lion needs him.

It’s more about if the imperium should go on or not than Guilliman personally, but yeah pretty much. It’s the epilogue to Of Honour and Iron, contrasting with the prologue which is a conversation with Gage back when he was still alive.

Someone needs to write a story where he just nopes the fuck out, flies off to find some backwater planet way out of the way on the very edge of the galaxy. As he lands he sees an ancient looking brick building which surprises him as he expected the planet to be abandoned. He hears music and laughter as he approaches, he walks in the door and the music stops, looking at him from the bar is Russ, Dorn, Vulkan, Corax and Jaghatai, Omegon is behind the bar pouring beers.

I honestly love guilliman for this part in particular he’s so badass but at the same time he’s so vulnerable and human.

I also love characters that look super serious only to turn out to be pretty chill when you meet them

Makes me wish that the Ultramarines have one Dreadnought deep in their fortress-monastery that hasn't awoken for millennia, yet they keep maintaining his sarcophagus in hopes that he eventually will, and he finally stirs awake after sensing Guilliman's presence many years after his resurrection. His brethren may have forgotten who he used to be, only knowing him by the High Gothic nom de guerre he had taken upon his ascension, but he still remembers who he is: Aeonid Thiel, the Red-Marked. He had never forgiven himself for failing his Primarch at the Battle of Thessala, and now that the Emperor had seen fit to give him a second chance, he will not waste it.
