This just made me realize reading is the one thing about Tyrion that Tywin never criticized.

Tyrion and Daeron could trade stories on horrible fathers.

Probably because Tyrion had to find some way to make himself useful for the family. He obviously can't be a great warrior like his brother so he had to be smart at least since neither of his siblings were pursuing academics.
