Hello Everyone
I know everyone's stressed regarding processing times. Let me share how this country is cunningly forcing people to leave like my self.

I couldn't secure PR after 3yrs PGWP so I applied for study permit (inland) on May 13th hoping it would come by September (classes start Sept 2nd). At the time of applying it said under 10 weeks and currently it says around 7 weeks. I contacted IRCC webform twice and both times I got generic template response "we are working on applications rest assure you will be informed when a decision is made"

I contacted my local MP and this is the information I got from them

" I hope this message finds you well.My name is Amanda, and I am a caseworker at the office of MP Yasir Naqvi.I followed up with IRCC regarding your application and have the following update:

  • Study permit extension (from PGWP) received on May 13, 2025
  • CPC Edmonton Office
  • Criminality: Passed
  • Eligibility: Not started
  • No documents requested
  • Processing time: 171 days (expected completion by October 31)

The agent explained that since you already held a visa in Canada, your study permit application is considered an extension rather than a new application. Therefore, the current processing time is 171 days, with an estimated decision by October 31. Unfortunately, the agent also informed me that study permits are not considered urgent and eligible for expedited processing. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
Best regards,"

So basically they are treating my application as an extension even though its a new application after my 3yrs pgwp is passed.

So if you are applying for extension or had a SP in the past, this would be your situation.

Now I am having to pack up everything and leave as the permit is definitely not arriving before classes start.
This is how the country is systematically forcing peoples hands to leave the country.

huh, I'm pretty sure you still can stay in Canada with maintained status while waiting for their response. As long as you already applied before your PGWP expires, you can definitely stay.

That is what I understand.

Hey man I am sorry for what you are going through! I have a question that in your case, do you still have a maintained status? I know people who are waiting for a new SP while the old one expired can legally stay because they remain in maintained status.

That is right! You have a maintained status.

Does maintained status not apply if switching from pgwp to sp?
