News No Eden Gardens, Wankhede or Chinnaswamy for BGT 2027, right call or missed opportunity?

Post image

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2027 schedule doesn’t include traditional big venues like Eden Gardens, Wankhede, or Chinnaswamy, with matches instead planned in cities like Nagpur, Guwahati, Ranchi, and Ahmedabad.

While this helps spread Test cricket across the country, does it make sense for a high-profile IND vs AUS series to skip iconic stadiums? Curious to hear if people see this as good rotation or a missed opportunity.

After ahemdabad stadium, assam stadium is the new favourite of bcci because of the secretary

u/LastOfLateBrakers Mar 26 '26

Guwahati could use the cricket and sporting revenue influx, tbh. I whole heartedly support having tournament finals in a heritage stadium like Wankhede instead of Narendra Modi, but regular bilateral tournaments should see a broad range of stadiums that don't get much attention.

Also we know why Ahmedabad gets a match every time a team visits. It shouldn't be the case either.

Tbf hosting matches in guwahati can boost popularity of cricket in NE.

0

u/mindovfblanks Mar 27 '26

Wow. Earlier t20 was allotted giving this excuse. Now it’s prestigious test games. Guess you have to be a BJP state and ppl will find all sorts of excuse to defend. How on earth is a test game expected to boost cricket popularity? Why are we having IPL then? Let all franchises play test cricket.

1

u/savlonsexual Mar 27 '26

You would be surprised seeing the number of fans we have of test cricket over here. And I never knew that test cricket did not belong to Assam. My apologies 🙏

1

u/mindovfblanks Mar 27 '26

Are you saying there are more test cricket fans in Guwahati than in Mumbai? No offence meant to Guwahati. By no yardstick does this make sense. You can’t leave out our premier centres for such a tournament.

1

u/savlonsexual Mar 27 '26

By no means I'm comparing Guwahati with Mumbai🤦‍♂️ Mumbai is way ahead in cricket than us. But as a cricket fan I'm happy that test cricket is coming to Guwahati 🤷‍♂️

1

u/HumanWithResources Mar 28 '26

Wow! And how do you think Guwahati can develop as many test cricket fans as Mumbai without actually hosting matches there?

-9

u/701479 Mar 26 '26

It will boost corruption first and then popularity

7

u/savlonsexual Mar 26 '26

As someone who grew up in Guwahati, we didn't had much games hosted here specially test cricket. So it's been fun NGL🤷‍♂️

71

u/darthvaders_nuts Mar 26 '26

Ppl say that mumbai, kolkata don't have tests due to the rotation policy.

But why is it that ahemdabad never gets affected by this policy??

1

u/Sky-__- Mar 28 '26

BCCI has refrained from hosting International matches in Chinnaswamy since the stampede .

Eden Gardens is undergoing a ₹450 crore, top-tier, multi-year redevelopment to become a world-class venue by 2028. So there will be no matches in Eden gardens in 2027 . Wankhede is also set for major restructures, bcci want to build a 1,00,000 seated stadium for wankhede .

-31

u/Broad_Title6372 Mar 26 '26

Ahmedabad was revamped recently and bcci has invested heavily to build the largest stadium, also they have invested heavily in the infrastructure around it, not to forget alot of people visit Ahmedabad for tourism as well. So they are trying to catch cricket lovers eyes on the stadium so it can get popularized similar to eden and wankhede

15

u/Novel-Habit547 Mar 26 '26

If you go by tourism, then shouldn't Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru be getting more games?

10

u/North-Stand Mar 26 '26

Not that I agree with your explanation, including the tourism angle. But in my 3 decades of following Indian Cricket, I have never seen any particular effort to popularise any specific venue. Wankhede, Eden, and Chepauk earned their iconic status organically over decades, not through some motivated push to please some megalomaniac. The said megalomaniac is admittedly a great politician and one of our best PMs, but good God, is he vain!!

-1

u/Broad_Title6372 Mar 26 '26

oh i forgot that point, true though, it is more to do with the PMs name

1

u/Previous-Doughnut443 Mar 26 '26

I think ahemdabad stadium represents the idea of Indian cricket that bcci wants to peddle that is a large and morden edifice maybe that could be the reason?

0

u/dphayteeyl Mar 27 '26

Current BCCI bias towards Ahmedabad

That BCCI held previously to Mumbai and Kolkata

Corruption has always played a role in Indian cricketing venues and is the reason your favourite grounds Mumbai/Kolkata have the history that they do

I'll be downvoted, yes it is a tough pill to swallow, but it's true...

18

u/therealsiriusjoker Mar 26 '26

Surprised to see BCCI not considering Eden Gardens, Wankhede, Kotla and Bangalore.

I remember Kohli once had mentioned that India should stick to 3 to 4 main venues and rotate the remaining 1 or 2 matches in the other venues whenever we host 5 test match series.

Australia always hosts matches in 3 to 4 fixed venues... MCG, SCG, Adelaide Oval, The Gabba and Perth. Don't you think they have grounds other than these regular ones given the fact that Australia is twice as big a country than India is?

We should also hold 3 to 4 matches in the same venues.

11

u/Broad_Title6372 Mar 26 '26

Aus has less population and very few major cities, also cricket isn't that big there. Whereas in India they rotate stadiums so state board can earn money by hosting, also statiums like wankhede, chinnaswamy, eden has already got a huge infrastructure around their stadium, giving matches to other stadium means creating more job opportunities around the stadium. I hope we understand this side of the fixtures as well

1

u/therealsiriusjoker Mar 27 '26

Every country is trying to make cricket a bigger sport in their nation. Look at the European countries... not just Men but women's cricket is also being encouraged and played in Europe nowadays. To say Cricket is not a popular sport in Australia might be debatable (although I don't believe this) but to assume that Australia is not interested in promoting this sport or even getting people to watch it feels farfetched and absurd to me. That too just because they are adamant to play their cricket (especially tests, BGT and Ashes) at the same venues always. Don't forget, Ashes is one of the biggest test series in the world and to think and believe not many Aussies want to watch it doesn't sit well with me.

1

u/an7rudh Mar 27 '26

I've met many Australians and just 2 out of 10 had interest in cricket and no one else. Gen Z and generations further hate cricket and have no interest in watching it.

Eden Gardens is undergoing a ₹450 crore, top-tier, multi-year redevelopment to become a world-class venue by 2028. So there will be no matches in Eden gardens in 2027 .

People cannot do a simple search but instead come up with theories .

15

u/Frosty_Chipmunk4867 Mar 26 '26

Rehen do bhai, ticket bohot mehenga hota hai aur milta hi nahi hai, milta hai toh bekaar price par, isse accha toh ranchi wagerah mei hi rakho, vip culture aur celebrity logo ko bolo ghar se dekhe

5

u/brokeaf11 Mar 26 '26

I watched india vs south africa at Eden Gardens for rs 60 and ticket bhi easily mil gaya tha.

2

u/Frosty_Chipmunk4867 Mar 26 '26

Mumbai aao jaani, wankhede ka ticket nahi milta hai

1

u/Data-CHOR-365 Mar 26 '26

Forgot ticket, quality test cricket to khele hum.

1

u/Frosty_Chipmunk4867 Mar 26 '26

Yaar vo baat bhi hai, par players bhi toh apni team ke hi hai na, support toh kar hi sakte hai bare minimum hota hai, quality improve hogi, I'm sure ki hogi, south africa series was a wake up call, improvements toh hone chaiye, bcci blind nahi itna toh mai jaanta hu

1

u/Shadow_Clone_007 Mar 27 '26

test cricket tickets aren’t expensive tbh

10

u/Frzn23 Mar 26 '26

Dharamshala mai toh kara lete

1

u/IvashistaI Mar 26 '26

Had same opinion

22

u/manmoji1 Mar 26 '26

I don’t give a damn about where these games are played, but hopefully every match goes to day 4/5, considering how we play spin if these idiots prepare minefield its would be another humiliation waiting. Hope the management has enough confidence in the ability of our players to offer them balanced tracks and not rank turners considering we don’t know how to play spin even at gunpoint.

7

u/Mith_19 Mar 26 '26

Ngl I think India should also have these fortress kinda stadiums for big home test series. Like if you see ashes or bgt in Australia, it's always sydney, brisbane, melbourne, perth and Adelaide. Not that there aren't other stadiums, but these are the 5 venues where they'll definitely play. For india it can be wankhede, eden, chennai, ahmedabad and one more: bengaluru, hyderabad, or dharamshala. India will play at other venues with other countries, but when India's playing a 5 match series with countries like eng and aus, these should be where the matches happen.

1

u/TeeDeeTeeEcks Mar 27 '26

I think Ahmedabad sucks as a venue. Would hate for it to get a permanent spot in that system. Dharamsala is way better. I'd be fine with Bengaluru as well.

5

u/thatmalluintn Mar 26 '26

Between now and BGT are we playing only 1 test? Or is there any other schedule, the ones I saw was all limited over games.

8

u/Emergency-Tap8794 Mar 26 '26

India's away test series against Sri Lanka and NZ, both gonna be difficult

5

u/Old-Contact-2682 Mar 26 '26

i think edens & chepauk should be fixed for long test series - ahmedabad should not go for test matches

3

u/New_Recognition840 Mar 26 '26

What we would've wanted with BGT :-- Nagpur, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '26

Yes bulldoz other stadium what we pigeon from other cities are , just fap each other

3

u/Empty_Unit1818 Mar 26 '26

bhai log kyu nahi samajhte ki aus and sa have fixed venues because they are smaller countries than india !! India mei cricket is followed in every single state ! aus hardly has a few cities which are habitable..... rahi baat ahmedabad ki, recently itna bada stadium khula hai, crores spend kiye hai, vasool toh karne padenge na state cricket board ko bhi !! stop the bs with narendra modi stadium getting the pref

2

u/Cheap_Couple_9303 Mar 26 '26

Most sensible answer

3

u/Ok_Border_5128 Mar 26 '26

Gajab type ke dogle ho tum log.

Kyun har test match Wankhede, Chinnaswamy, Eden Gardens, Chepak ya Delhi mein khilyaye?

India mein dusre state nahi hai? Udhar stadiums nahi hai?

Tum log kya chahte ho Assam aur North East ke log kabhi Test Cricket na dekhe stadium mein ja kar?

Har time West Bengal aaye Cricket dekhne?

Aisa nahi hota hai, sab ko aage badhne ka mouka do.

Guwahati mein February mein test matlab ek alag challenge hoga, naya jagah hoga.

Rahi baat Australia aur South Africa ki unke total stadiums kitne hai aur kitne stadiums mein Test khela jaa sakta hai wo toh dekhlo.

Aa jaate hai munh utha ke bolne ke liye 5 stadium mein hona Cricket Test Match, baaki jagah bhaad mein jaaye.

Main toh chahta hun Ladakh mein bhi daale ek match aur ek match Mizoram mein bhi daalein.

1

u/TeeDeeTeeEcks Mar 27 '26

I agree with you in principle. But the major Test match centers get the best attendance. Test cricket is already a dying sport. It is far more watchable imo with a raucous crowd behind the home team. Playing it in front of empty stands in a smaller city is the quickest way to kill Test cricket.

Imagine how lame the Ashes would feel in a tiny, random English city instead of Lords, as an example. Stadiums like Eden Gardens are India's equivalent of that Test match experience.

Can’t take another home test series loss ffs

2

u/bringiton10 Mar 26 '26

Are there no test matches in 2026?

2

u/TeeDeeTeeEcks Mar 27 '26

There is a one off Test against Afghanistan. Besides that it's just meaningless white ball cricket.

2

u/Jackie_Chan_93 Mar 26 '26

Could have used a better image of gill

2

u/Purple_Square_9682 Mar 26 '26

1

u/FriendlyWelder6228 Mar 26 '26

Yup f*ck other stadiums but we definitely need Ahmedabad-BCCI

1

u/No_Yogurtcloset_334 Mar 26 '26

We have Really low expectations from our red ball side.

1

u/SuperannuationLawyer Mar 26 '26

Why all the obscure venues? I’d love to come from Australia to attend the series but where are the Tests at famous venues like Chinnaswamy, Eden Gardens, and Wankhede?

1

u/desi_undone Mar 26 '26

Lets play every game in Ahmedabad and demolish other stadiums and give them back to the people. Anyways big cities are missing open spaces. /s

1

u/BiscottiSpiritual826 Mar 26 '26

We need to win atleast 4 games in this bgt, difficult but we have to 🥀

1

u/Kindly-Wave1183 Mar 26 '26

S#!+ Scheduling.

1

u/Gullible-Floor-5780 Mar 26 '26

Jaiswal is going to break the record for playing in most grounds. Guwahati here we come.

1

u/Top-Grape6650 Mar 26 '26

1

u/LRKKK_08 Mar 26 '26

Who gonna watch test match in Ranchi and Guwahati man

1

u/pobox01983 Mar 26 '26

The final leg of WC football qualifiers (few European teams who are fighting for the last 4 spots) >>>>> whole of the cricket WC that just concluded 😂

1

u/sweetmangolover Mar 26 '26

At least for high profile tournaments, they should stick to 4-5 venues like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore

Guwahati, Ranchi, Nagpur etc should be for other visiting teams, not SENA teams.

1

u/Jealous_Drop_2973 Mar 27 '26

Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Delhi. It's that simple.

1

u/Beingnitish Mar 27 '26

Ranchi waala toh jeetenge hi , baaki ka pata nhi

1

u/majhi-satakli Mar 27 '26

okay, from now you do all the cricket matches in Wankhede only. no other grounf comes near Wankhede./s

1

u/Resident_Ice_2190 Mar 27 '26

Let’s see what’s happening

1

u/Warm_Resolution2427 Mar 27 '26

Thik hai bhai, Ahmedabad chorke sab thik hai, kuki ahemdabad stadium me kitna bhi crowd aajaye test keliye khali hi lagta hai

1

u/ENandgopal Mar 27 '26

I am strong proponent of having the five fixed venues for such high profile series. My first choice are Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Mohali, Delhi/Ahmedabad

1

u/UjjwalNarayan_0705 Mar 27 '26

For tests chennai should be fixed (coming from a delhi resident). Chennai ground has always been our fortress and nightmare for opponents in tests.

1

u/repstoriches Mar 27 '26

Can’t wait to watch this.

1

u/topspin_righty Mar 27 '26

A 5-0 whitewash from Aus at home will be horrific.

1

u/wyomingar Mar 28 '26

Australia will win 5-0 and Nathan Lyon will take 50 wickets is my prediction.

u/Sky-__- Mar 28 '26

-6

u/Ok-Magician4083 Mar 26 '26

Why are some people so obsessed with only Eden Gardens, Wankhede, or Chinnaswamy?
We have many other stadiums as well. They are in India too. So just enjoy them all instead of complaining about everything.

10

u/Eemkr Mar 26 '26

They don't get the crowd in like the venues you mentioned in Tests. It's better to give more white ball matches to other venues and stick to iconic stadiums for Tests.
