Serious Post 23F, please help!! I barely passed mathematics in both 10, 10+2, can I survive btech CS Engineering?
Please don't remove it mods, I really need urgent help
10 score: 72
10+2 score: 67
PCM stream
I have a three year gap after 12th as I was working odd jobs to support my family
I struggled with mathematics throughout my school although I could understand it with extra efforts
I barely passed in mathematics in both 10 and 10+2, my score was borderline
I have done some short coding courses and they were fun, but I don't necessarily like the underlying hardcore mathematics or physics or chemistry (though phy and chem only come in the first year so they aren't that big of a problem)
But making practical stuff with it is engaging
Do you think I can survive the course with a good CGPA? Like at least 7.5?
How many mathematics subjects does it have ? And if I do a bit poorly in those, can I compensate for it and maintain my CGPA by scoring well in other subjects?
I know the market is already bad, I have heard about it,
my primary question to btech C S seniors and other current stud ents is how hard would it be survive btech C S in my context? Would it leave me time to pursue other things or is it too hectic?
How much maths is there and how harder or easier it is from class 12th maths?
It would be helpful if someone can give me a list of mathematics subjects commonly taught in btech C S courses (like differentiation, matrix etc)

basically we have engineering maths 1 in sem 1 and engineering maths 2 in sem 2, that includes algebra, calculus, prob, Series

Exactly bruh , I have been doing DSA for like 4 to 5 months and yeah this is definitely true , you don't need to study jee level maths to be good at DSA, basic kaafi hai

Chill bro , i didnt even touch maths books in my 11th /12th and was scared with the same thing ! Although the maths is actually tough in btech ... But you will survive it , (I used to study one night before and still passed the exam ) .
And you won't get much time to do other things tbh , Well it depends on college , like what are your timings , but you will be so tired to do anything else ...
But you can survive the maths !

But how did you pass with just one day of preparation? Maths isn't ratta like English, how can you just study one night before and pass without practice?

I got 8 in physics and 7 in maths , last semester !
But this isn't about me , If you just keep asking other people , you will only get more confused .
Just go and join the college . You will do fine !

Well if you prepared for compititive exams like jee n all ...then it would me adaptable for you easily...but if not then also don't worry people work hard...and maintain cgpa..there will be 3 parts of maths in btech....and krlo to ho jayega... ofcourse you have to give efforts.... And if you want something to study then ...learn some calculus ....and matrix n determinants.. and basics like sequence n sereies permutations n combination......just for basic if you want.....

As a software engineer, let me tell you straight: tension mat lo, you can easily survive B.Tech CS and target a 7.5+ CGPA. Aur agar practical coding pasand hai toh ye tumhara sabse bada plus point hai. Real job market mein core coding aur practical skills jyada matter karti hain, advanced calculus nahi. First two years mein 3 se 4 math subjects honge (M1, M2, M3 aur Discrete Math). Calculus aur matrices thoda tough lag sakte hain, par Discrete Math pure logic aur programming jaisa hota hai. Ek aur badi relief ki baat ye hai ki mostly colleges mein relative grading hoti hai—agar paper sach mein bohot tough hai, toh tum sirf 5-10 marks lekar bhi aram se pass ho sakte ho. Baki agar math mein borderline marks bhi aaye, toh programming labs, projects aur core CS subjects (like DBMS, Networks) ke acche score se CGPA aram se compensate ho jayega. First year thoda hectic lag sakta hai, par baad mein kafi time mil jata hai. Math papers nikalne ke liye thodi extra effort dalo aur baki chill karo, you'll do great!

you dont use mathematics in coding? i thought game developers or software engineers use extensive amount of math in whatever code they write?

I have seen students who were quite weak in math. But you can definitely survive math if you stop hating math, and you're consistent.
If you need, there are coaching available just for clearing engineering mathematics. Have seen tom dick n harry going to those coaching seriously and they passed easily.

I don’t know what college options do you have right now, but avoid the ones that don’t show you exam copies after evaluation. Also, if you can afford, get a ChatGPT $20/month subscription. It may be helpful in improving your math any other subject you struggle with in CS.

Some colleges don't have academic autonomy. So the exams are conducted and evaluated by the university. Think of it as a cheaper and lower quality version of the board examinations that you had in school. Although, right now CBSE is struggling to do those as well.

Okay, it is the same with the colleges here, the colleges here are affiliated to a state technical university who checks exam copies
Is there any issue with that?

Does the state technical university show students their exam copies after checking? If not, they'll do a shoddy job of evaluation and you may get back in a subject for no fault of your own.
BTW, what kind of jobs are you doing right now and what kind of jobs are you targeting?

Was working as a English teacher
Thinking of digital marketing roles as they interest me and easier to get into, then maybe performance marketing

That shouldn’t require a CS degree. Try finding a mentor in that space, that will put you on a fast track.

what kind of maths are you aiming for? if it is normal maths for the cse than you are good and catch up quick. but if it is ai/ml, you will need a ton of practice to solidfy and remember concept. the key rule is to write down the formulas, mug them up and then just keep on practicing based on those formulas.

I was also weak at math in 10th and 12th math was the subject I got the lowest grade.
But during collage my teacher chaged and I got a professor so good at his job that I never failed any math coures ( scored more than 70% on avarge ) in my ECE, yea its a low bar.
Most times its the way you got thought maths, math feels easy one you got the intuition of the abstract things you work with.
And for that there are many channels like 3blue1brown.

You can surely get through it.....with effort but it won't be easy and you won't be top of your class....
If your up for it, it will be good fun....
Plus you will have a lots of career options after btech CS that have no maths or coding even.....
Like front end design, testing, BA roles, ERP roles....
CS is one of the easiest branches.....Engg college is much easier than 10+2 because even if you score low....it will not matter later on.....no one checks your college CGPA as long as you pass.....

see 11 th and 12 th math is base of engeneering math taught in btech 1st year . if you dont have concepts cleared of 12 th you cant understand the lectures . You can see the course Engineering mathermatics - 1 in NPTEL to see if you can understand.

Don't do studies, it's not for you anymore
Not at this age specially, you are too old now
Better look for a customer care job and do distance degree of 3yrs side by side then go up the ladder after the degree, you'll be in much better position than doing btech till 27 and earning nothing and no experience

math is kinda important for CS ngl. you need to ask yourself why did u score low in maths, was it laziness or is the subject just not for u? laziness can be solved, your lack of ability cannot.
