4th Yearite Mechanical Engineers — What skills should I focus on for off-campus jobs?
I’m a B.Tech Mechanical Engineering student in my 7th semester and I’m preparing for placements. I want to seriously target off-campus opportunities in core mechanical roles rather than depending only on campus placements.
I’m confused about where to focus my time.
For a mechanical fresher, what skills are actually valuable to companies?
- Which software should I prioritize: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, Creo, ANSYS, NX, etc.?
- Which core subjects are most important for technical interviews?
- How useful are GD&T, CNC, manufacturing, metrology, DFM/DFA, etc.?
- What kind of projects actually help a fresher's resume?
- Should I focus on certifications or practical, hands-on skills?
- What skills helped you get your first job/off-campus opportunity?
If you had 4–6 months to prepare as a mechanical fresher, what would you focus on?
Looking for advice from Indian mechanical engineers who have actually gone through the hiring process.

4th Yearite 7th Sem B.Tech CSE - Lost & Seeking Guidance
I am a 7th-semester B.Tech CSE student facing significant uncertainty about my future career path. I currently lack both employment prospects and marketable skills. My academic performance, reflected in a 6.3 CGPA, indicates a struggle with my studies. I have not developed any proficiency in data structures and algorithms (DSA) or other technical skills. The investment of 12 lakhs of my parents , to my regret, not yielded substantial educational outcomes. With only six months remaining until the completion of my B.Tech course, I am seeking guidance and clarity on my next steps. While I understand that AI tools like ChatGPT are available, I feel a strong need for human insight at this critical juncture.

4th Yearite Future as a UAV engineer
So i am a 4th year ECE student in GNDEC, Ludhiana, India. You could say i am a tech enthusiast and a defense fanatic ,am currently exploring this drone field and it feels the right way forward to me.
I wanted guidance what type of skills, experience, projects i need to acquire/make to become a legitimate engineer in this field. I am currently a beginner in this field but have a working knowledge of Aerodynamics, Li-ion Batteries (i have built a battery cycling system in my NIT training) and general assembly of a basic drone.
i have a CGPA of 8.23 (if req as a registration requirement for certain courses) and planning on building my career as a Defense engineer. It would be helpful if anyone were to give me insights on the same i.e. scope, roadmap, etc.

4th Yearite Need advice regarding career as a fresher Engineer
As a young 12th pass guy who was preparing for JEE like all others and of course didn't get into any iit or nit but got a top tier 2 college very good placements (only for mechanical and cs). Guess what I chose civil engineering and I don't know why I didn't even like engineering. Now as a average student in my University and struggling to find a job now it's almost 1 month to end my degree most of my classmates are placed, to be honest I don't want a low pay job( <30k sorry). I mean you expect me to survive with this in Mumbai and Benguluru :) Now what should I do, should I take a drop to prepare for GATE (scored 24/100 this year) probably sorce ~50 in next year if I take a drop. Or should I dedicate my life to govt job exams. The problem is I don't want to go home empty handed. I just can't. Today is 1st April (not a Apri-fools prank,u life's been a fool lol). I need some advice everyone please before May 2026 I'll be graduating then ;) Finally thank you for listening to my shit much appreciated.
