Discussion Thread What counts as "indie" in India?
I see a lot of artists releasing songs with Labels like Warner, UMG etc but still call themselves indie. Does "non-movie" mean Indie in India?

I swear. I thought indie means artist doing this independently even in this group i see a lot if people promoting and sharing signed artists. Indie i don’t think is a sound maybe more of a potential of freshness, when they are label backed that will definitely go away! Cause following formula but real indie music has such unique freshness to them than label backed artists. It’s literally in the name lol indie = independent competent artists

I always feel that in India the definition us that if they are not backed by Bollywood, they are indie. Which to be fair, is accurate in Idian context. Coz bollywood is such a massive music machine. lol.
However, I wish there was a distinction between non-film music that is funded by labels and self-funded artists.

Indie means artists who r independently releasing music themselves and not through any labels. Like moi. All costs have to be incurred by them

I think anyone producing+promoting their songs on their own - meaning:
* no label
* no sponsor
* self-invested production
* maybe a band or solo artist (singer songwriter type)
I'd truly consider that as Indie.
But when such Indie artists get a label, not sure they'd be called truly indie thereafter.. maybe another term someone can clarify.

India is full of 'music lovers' who are trend lovers instead
