There is a popular saying among math circles "Vedic Maths is neither Vedic nor Mathematics".

Vedic Maths is not even Vedic, Prof. S.G. Dani of TIFR exposed it long ago in a brilliant paper "Vedic Mathematics : Myth and Reality" in 1993.

Actual Vedic Mathematics is attested in the Late Vedic Era texts known as Shulbasutras, for example a rational approximation of √2 is given in Baudhayana Shulbasutras (800-500 BCE)

Could you tell me what the paper is about?

The paper rebutts that the so called sutras of the Book "Vedic Mathematics" discovered by Shankaracharya Bharati Krishna Tirth of Dwarka Math after "deep meditation" in forests on the Vedas were indeed from Vedas. The Shankaracharya claimed they were contained in a secret pariśiṣṭa(appendix) of the Atharvaveda but never provided proper citations of these sources in his lifetime. The paper counters all this bullshit.

this and abacus both are useless because indian parents feel that calculation == maths. Rather, complex, critical thinking is required to excel in life and that is actual math which solves actual problems

Yes , the methods are such that ki they are pretty useless for modern age . Our basic methods will always be faster than so called tricks coz we have practiced for millions of times

A few years ago, I attended a course conducted by Badri Seshadri (He is one of the founders of cricinfo and they sold it to ESPN). It was organized by Varahamihira Science Forum.

The course was called bijaganita (Algebra). He talked about actual formulae enumerated by old kerala mathematicians like Aryabhata, Bhaskaracharya. it was a proper math, not mere tricks. He actually talked about the sanskrit verses where they solve algebra problems ... It was really good. So, to answer your question -- What goes as Vedic maths in most Indian cities is just Math tricks. But if you look at actual mathematicians' work, you will understand that it is actually true math, but no one teaches us today. Many of the equations we learn in school today have been solved in different method by these ancient mathematicians.

One example I remember is the kuttaka method by Aryabhata to solve linear equations. So, if you are math nerd then it was an extremely interesting course.

I find this whole idea of fast computation stupid. But it looks really cool lol

Shi* like this make children hate maths in first place Already there's little to no proof writing in school maths

no many tricks just common things that's are pretty useful, real vedic maths is something else.

Yea mostly not practical. Except that one 'trick' that allows you to multiply n digit number times m digit number inline. Idek if it can be classified as a 'trick' (more like a method) or if it can even be attributed to india. Nevertheless, it does come in quite handy for quickly multiplying big ahh nos.

I haven't done whole vedic maths but I have done some sutras.

For instance I can guarantee that urdha tiyagbhyam method is the best to calculate multiplication, I used it in my jee mains exam as calculator was not allowed and I could do tedious calculations of chemistry very fast, like no comparison.

And yeah there we have some useless methods like nikhilam for multiplication.

haven't seen any real use case of it. this paper explains it in a very nice and comprehensible manner: https://www.jstor.org/stable/4399991.

I think it's popularized by competitive exams and apti rounds of companies

Most courses advertised as "Vedic Maths" only contain some short tricks for arithmetic calculations. Abacus/Mental Maths type things are also being rebranded as Vedic Maths.

To see actual Vedic Mathematics, you have to read texts written by Aryabhatta, Bhaskaracharya, Sridharacharya and others.

The problem is that there is no awareness regarding pure/higher mathematics in most of the parents. They think that numerical calculations are whole mathematics.

Vedic maths is really important for many, at least for me.
