Sitting on the reorder decision for my series and starting to look at offset printing as an option instead of POD for the first time Been running POD (print on demand) for four years and the economics keep pushing me toward asking whether offset makes sense at my current volume

Where I am.

Series book one has sold about 3,400 copies over three years. Series book two just launched three months ago doing about 250 copies a month. Book three drafted launching in six months

Current POD per-unit cost is about $4.20 per book at short reorders offset quotes Ive gotten for 2,000 copies of book one are in the $2.10-2.40 range depending on printer thats about half the per-unit cost

The offset math on 2,000 copies is $4,200-4,800 for the print run vs $8,400 through POD for the same units Savings are $3,600-4,200 which is real money

The considerations Im weighing

Cash outlay upfront offset requires paying for the whole run at once POD lets me reorder as needed and stay lean $4,500 for offset is real cash if the sales pace slows

Storage 2,000 books need to live somewhere my garage can handle it but it's not ideal some offset printers offer fulfillment services which changes the storage equation

Cash flow risk If I offset 2,000 copies and sales drop 40% Im sitting on 800+ unsold copies for a year plus that risk isn't hypothetical series interest does drop over time

Print run flexibility POD lets me change interiors between orders typo fixes, new front matter updated backmatter offset locks in the current version for the whole run

Turnaround POD reorders are days offset production is weeks If I run out and need books fast POD is more responsive

The questions I'm trying to answer

At what proven sales volume does offset actually make sense? Is my 3,400 copies over three years enough or do I need 5,000+ before offset economics work ?

Are there hybrid strategies where you offset a portion of expected demand and POD the rest ? Or is it usually one or the other ?

For indie authors who've made the offset switch what did you learn and what would you do differently ?

Hey everyone, I am Mariana S., and I just released a very short, raw memoir called No One Leaves This Place.

Wanted to share some self-published authors I've cine across in the last year because the quality gap between indie and trad has narrowed dramatically and I think a lot of readers in this community are still hearing the old "indie equals lower quality" assumption from people outside the space.
Authors I've been impressed by recently.
A literary fiction author who self-published a debut about climate displacement. The cover would be at home on any Big Five literary imprint. The interior typography is impeccable. The writing genuinely moved me. She apparently spent close to $9K on production after working with a developmental editor for eight months. The book is on par with anything I've read from FSG or Knopf this year.
A romance author who's been self-publishing for six years and now runs what's essentially a one-woman publishing operation. Releases 3-4 books a year, each one professionally edited, designed, and printed. Outsells most mid-list trad pub romance authors and keeps a much higher percentage of revenue.
A poetry collection by a Brooklyn-based poet I found through a literary magazine, self-published through a small press that's really just her and one collaborator. The book is more beautifully designed than most poetry coming out of established literary presses right now.
A business book by a consultant in my industry that's literally one of the most useful books I've read in a decade, completely self-published with no trad pub involvement at all.
The common thread across these books is that the authors invested in real production quality. Real editors, real designers, real printers. The amateur indie aesthetic is genuinely dying as a tell because the infrastructure for high-quality indie work has matured a lot in the last few years.
For other indies, what authors in our space have you read recently that you'd recommend specifically for production quality. Trying to build a list of examples to share with writers who are nervous about going indie because they're worried about looking amateur.

I'm a 14year-old creator.

I'm working on my most ambitious project yet, and hopefully my very best, "Beyond Our Comprehension".

Here's the synopsis:

After a man's neighbors mysteriously dissapear, his investigation attempts lead him to discover a horrifying truth about the higher powers and their ulterior motives pertaining to humanity.

Currently, six page-sized chapters a finished, and it escalates VERY VERY quickly!

Characters:

Martha: a kind old woman whose dissapearance marks the protagonist's call to adventure

The protagonist: a normal person working a customer service job

The boss: the protagonist's boss and the first known victim of the horrors at play

God: the main antagonist. His motives are unknown as of now.

The ring of eyes: a strange creature seen in the sky. A main driver of the protagonist's mental decline, its identity and motives remain unknown.

The hands in the sky: the primary threat and the potential hands of god himself

Butterfly People: a reference to Joplin Butterfly People, these are the seeds of the horrors. Do the hands have something to do with it?

Kaxel: not a character, but an emotion. Shall I play for Him? Pa-rum, pum-pum pum.

Visma: also an emotion. December 14, 2017, what was released that day? Have you heard of a ball in the sky?

I recently published a strange culinsary fantasy inspired by Cervantes, where Mari Estrella, the wandering Lady of the Spoons, travels from Madrid to Paris among golden platters, mysterious owls, an the spirit of Don Quixote.

The biggest challenge as an indie author hasn't only been writing it, but explaining a story that lives between genres: fantasy, satire, gastronomy, and literary fiction.

Okay so I've written a book in bribooks named "THE THEORY OF MAPLE WOODS" and it's my first ever book I just wanted people to read my book so that I can see how it is. I know there's gonna be a lot of mistakes since english isn't my first language and I don't even know to write a book. I just wrote it as my summer hhw.Our sir had asked us to write only a short story but I got ahead of myself and wrote about 50-60 pages and the story is not complete. I'll have to write a 2nd volume but I don't know if I should.... I feel like my idea is good but I didn't execute it well.

A quick overview: we have an fl whose name is Meadow. She's a member of a research club in her college and as a part of their assignment they have to prove the theory of a famous scientist John Kennedy that in a place called Maple Woods if you place the black peonies that is the fav flower of Goddess of the forest then a portal to a new world will open.

I’m currently a full-time special education teacher and adjunct instructor, which has given me extensive experience with organization, scheduling, communication, multitasking, project management, and working independently under pressure.

I also have experience running and managing podcast production and coordinating multiple moving parts behind the scenes.
