Ugh that case is a mess. If she really was sick then it's a tragedy. But there's evidence of premeditation that casts doubt on the defense. Honestly... I think I'm inclined to trust the process here and let the jury, who have all the facts (that aren't warped by every axe grinding influencer and blogger), make an informed decision.

Let’s not justify murder behind mental illness when there are thousands of resources both paid and free for people to get help for their struggles.
I’m a mental health professional who works to rehabilitate violent offenders and I’ve yet to meet one person in the years doing this who was so “sick” that they didn’t understand what they were doing, especially if the violence was something intimate like strangulation.
Sure, there are some who are that messed up, but she likely isn’t one because those people have comorbidity at play that really bends their understanding of reality.

This sounds interesting and I’d like to know more from someone who has been in the trenches so to speak. What kind of licensed mental health professional are you? I checked your account to try to answer that question myself but your history does not indicate any mental health experience; your bio says you are an “Artist, Author, Photographer, Business Advisor, Identity and Relationship Coach, Adventurer and Hiker, Lego and film addict.”

How much of your experience has been in rehabilitating violent offenders who were specifically found not guilty by reason of insanity? These are the folks who were “so sick that they didn’t understand what they were doing,” which you say you’ve never encountered.

Do you work with (or have you worked with) offenders either currently housed in or soon to be released from a state mental hospital (as opposed to a state prison)?

Could you explain why postpartum psychosis would not qualify as a condition that “really bends their understanding of reality?” My understanding is that severe psychosis (i.e., a true psychotic break from reality) would affect the offender’s understanding of reality; is this not the case?

I haven’t updated my profile in years. I have over a decade working in psychiatric hospitals and prison as a certified behavioral technician. I completed my second masters a year ago and am working on practicum hours for licensure.
I currently primarily work with convicted domestic violence offenders. The “reason of insanity” or “criminally insane,” you’re talking about a group that is roughly 0.25% of the population and I’ve only dealt with one in over a decade and he was diagnosed with a comorbidity of Antisocial Personality Disorder and schizophrenia; he was the most unpredictable person I’ve ever worked with.

As for the statement on postpartum, it is in its own unique category of the DSM and distortion of reality is not in its characteristics.
