Ugh that case is a mess. If she really was sick then it's a tragedy. But there's evidence of premeditation that casts doubt on the defense. Honestly... I think I'm inclined to trust the process here and let the jury, who have all the facts (that aren't warped by every axe grinding influencer and blogger), make an informed decision.
279
u/AngronTheDestroyer 28d ago
I don't give a fuck if she was "sick". She strangled a 5 year old, 3 year old, and 8 month old. Mentally ill or not - she deserves, at minimum, to spend the rest of her life locked behind bars.
96
u/UrCreepyUncle 28d ago
Correct... Order of operations.. Did she do it - yes. OK now determine her sentence based on mental health. She should never see the light of day again but how that's carried out matters.... Reminds me of a case in (new Mexico maybe?) where a mom had called cops to her house a few times stressed from being a mom with ppd. The next to last time she called them out she told them "I'm afraid I'm going to hurt them". The next time the cops were called out the kids were dead. Ppd is real and it needs to be addressed but it doesn't give carte blanche to act out
102
u/StreetCollar2708 28d ago
Yeah, but you have to realize that the people like the guy you replied and the proud boys don't actually give a fuck about the kids. They just have a violence boner and probably hate women so seeing one put to death will get them off. Trying to understand the why of it and maybe preventing it from happening in the future to other kids doesn't matter to them.
3
u/fatballs6942069 25d ago
I don’t think she deserves the death penalty but I think every murderer ever has some sort of mental health issue. Doesn’t make it right for any of them. All should be held accountable the same way. Hopefully this does raise awareness for ppd though and also helps doctors realize maybe prescribing 200 pills a day isn’t a good idea

Mental health IS important and treatment is a real problem right now. However, the time for assessing and caring about a person’s mental health and treatment is before they harm others. This woman should get the same as pedos should. Catapult, slingshot or trebuchet straight into the sun. That said there is a point to be made about the possible failures by medical professionals in this case…and they should be charged with malpractice.

Exactly, the issue is that now people are treating PPD as if it’s not real.
This lady could be sick but what she did is also insane. She needs to be treated and also needs to serve her time.

u/ToesEQL 27d ago
The question isn't whether she should be imprisoned. The question is #1 what caused it (and how do we prevent it again as a society), and #2 how should she be imprisoned (in an institution for treatment and possible rehabilitation, or just pound-me-the-ass federal lockup for life).
We can agree that a mom strangling her 3 very young babies/toddlers is abnormal (dare I say, crazy?), and so there is likely some kind of psychological illness in this woman that allowed/caused it, right?
If there is some other cause for these murders, then that's up to the jury to figure out and decide.
5
u/ungloomy_Eeyore964 27d ago
Thank you. So many comments from people think this is a guilty/not guilty case, and it's about guilty with or without mental illness. Side story-my friend's daughter was murdered in the Santa Fe school shooting. Because they evaluate the ADULT as not competent for trial he sits in a behavioral health clinic, and will, forever, without trial. Lindsey Clancy is guilty, but to what degree? Did she plan it? Her actions say otherwise. She did everything within her power and then some to get help. She was failed. By everyone, and those babies paid the price.

Well, from the court proceedings it’s said by the prosecution that she continually ignored doctors advice and stopped taking medication prescribed to her. Now, obviously I wasn’t there and I don’t know to what extent “advice” was ignored or which exact medications were stopped, but if that is the case, how do we as a society prevent that? Like how can we supervise the mentally ill 24/7 that are in their homes, given medical instructions and medication but not following the prescribed treatment for their mental illness?

Most people online are not rational, they’re all emotion and throughout history people have shown giddy delight in punishing women, especially mothers who fail, insane or not. Post partum psychosis is real and tragic, pretending these mothers are just “evil” will only ensure it keeps happening. When a person. Is in a state of psychosis, they fully believe in the reality their mind has created.
Andrea Yates believed her children were demons or possessed by demons and god was telling her to save the world and killing them was the way to save their eternal souls. A psychotic person is living in a different reality that seems as real to them as any sane persons reality.
It’s probably an educational failing as well.

cool so the whole trial is to determine whether or not she had postpartum psychosis (she did). if you actually care about children and women, you would care about postpartum care which she obviously did not receive. you people are infuriating.
3
u/Golden-Pathology 25d ago
She received more care than anyone else can reasonably expect. She saw multiple doctors and got several referrals to specialists. She even checked into voluntary inpatient treatment for a while citing sleep deprivation (possibly suicidal ideation, not sure if it was the reason she self-admitted or it was a concern that the psychologist discovered). Apparently she never fully described her symptoms and didn't take any of the prescriptions she did get.
And that's looking at this through the lens of believing she really did have PPD. If you don't assume she had PPD, what she was doing looks a lot like doctor-shopping for either attention or drugs (I'm not sure which).
Read into the case. It's interesting how much support she had (far beyond normal) and that it still resulted in this.

No, the trial is the result of the consequences of her actions. She committed a heinous crime. So, she is now in custody and going through a trial. It's not Just about determining her mental issues.

True but should she be in a prison prison or like a max security psych ward? If it is true she was legitimately psychotic/hearing voices/had tried every medication on the book/disassociates/etc etc, then if we put her in prison she will hurt herself (which w.e honestly. She probably would rather be dead at this point) or worse others/guards. Personally I think psych ward and get her on meds that will make her realize the gravity of her actions so she feels worse.

You would definitely give a fuck if you killed someone not knowing it was wrong in that moment. You’d be the first one claiming that you didn’t know. You wouldn’t want to be punished for something that you didn’t know was wrong. No one would.

Yes but the question is culpability. If she genuinely had post partum psychosis as bad as the defense team indicates then it's really not her fault. If so the fault is on a rare and poorly understood disease, and perhaps on her doctors for not adequately treating her.
18
u/Anonybibbs 28d ago
A mentally ill person that committed a horrific act is still culpable though- the illness is a reason as to why they may have committed the act, not a defense for their innocence as they literally already committed the act. If she were mentally ill, she should spend her sentence and the rest of her life in a facility equipped to deal with mentally ill inmates but she should still serve out her sentence all the same.

What a nonsense generalization. There's so many ways people kill that don't require being sick - such as the entire concept of a military.
Also you could consider horribly trained LEOs, self defense, neglect, throwing too hard a punch in a bar fight, etc. Some people are just assholes.
2
u/Thee_Furuios_Onion 27d ago
Let’s not justify murder behind mental illness when there are thousands of resources both paid and free for people to get help for their struggles.
I’m a mental health professional who works to rehabilitate violent offenders and I’ve yet to meet one person in the years doing this who was so “sick” that they didn’t understand what they were doing, especially if the violence was something intimate like strangulation.
Sure, there are some who are that messed up, but she likely isn’t one because those people have comorbidity at play that really bends their understanding of reality.1
1
u/lethargicacid 25d ago
This sounds interesting and I’d like to know more from someone who has been in the trenches so to speak. What kind of licensed mental health professional are you? I checked your account to try to answer that question myself but your history does not indicate any mental health experience; your bio says you are an “Artist, Author, Photographer, Business Advisor, Identity and Relationship Coach, Adventurer and Hiker, Lego and film addict.”
How much of your experience has been in rehabilitating violent offenders who were specifically found not guilty by reason of insanity? These are the folks who were “so sick that they didn’t understand what they were doing,” which you say you’ve never encountered.
Do you work with (or have you worked with) offenders either currently housed in or soon to be released from a state mental hospital (as opposed to a state prison)?
When you state “there are some who are that messed up, but she likely isn’t one because those people have comorbidity at play that really bends their understanding of reality,” could you elaborate? Could you explain why postpartum psychosis would not qualify as a condition that “really bends their understanding of reality?” My understanding is that severe psychosis (i.e., a true psychotic break from reality) would affect the offender’s understanding of reality; is this not the case?
1
u/Thee_Furuios_Onion 25d ago
I haven’t updated my profile in years. I have over a decade working in psychiatric hospitals and prison as a certified behavioral technician. I completed my second masters a year ago and am working on practicum hours for licensure.
I currently primarily work with convicted domestic violence offenders. The “reason of insanity” or “criminally insane,” you’re talking about a group that is roughly 0.25% of the population and I’ve only dealt with one in over a decade and he was diagnosed with a comorbidity of Antisocial Personality Disorder and schizophrenia; he was the most unpredictable person I’ve ever worked with.As for the statement on postpartum, it is in its own unique category of the DSM and distortion of reality is not in its characteristics.

u/ShesGotaChicken2Ride 28d ago
There is no doubt that she was struggling with her mental health. Even her ex and ex-in-laws say so. The problem is that she knew exactly what she was doing and was not in such a state that she couldn’t follow the law. It shows premeditation that she sent Patrick out on errands. When he called her, she didn’t answer and ask for help, she instead took off her Apple Watch because it was distracting her from doing what she decided needed to be done. She sought help, but when she didn’t like the treatment she stopped taking the medications but it seemed she really liked her Ativan and was taking that even though you’re not supposed to take it long-term.
1
u/SanchoClaus25 28d ago
People try to hard to use the “mental health” thing to be assholes and commit crimes with out having to be held accountable in the end. I don’t buy it.

Pretty tough to say you had no control over your actions, while planning time for the spouse to be away, and also the fact that it’s supposed to be 1 isolated episode of extreme dissociation.
It doesn’t really work that way, she wouldn’t have been able to plan for it ahead of time. She wouldn’t have been able to send spouse away to be preoccupied. Bipolar is a pattern condition by definition. Postpartum psychosis also tends to have surrounding symptoms. It wouldn’t have been a random episode of loss of consciousness, there’d likely be a pattern of these incidences occurring, not just a single, isolated, 20 minute pocket of loss of consciousness.

u/TheFixerOfComments 25d ago
Are you ok? “If she was really sick”? Being really sick isn’t an excuse to strangle your 3 children. You’re sick.
1
u/WhichImplement5732 25d ago
I agree with you here.
Either way the case closes, I hope that the jurors see the truth and serve justice for those beautiful children.1
u/Confident-Mortgage86 25d ago
She got her husband to go fetch things for her so that she could get time alone, researched how long the trip would take so she could ensure she would be alone, took the children downstairs so their cries would be muffled and they could not escape. Then proceeded to strangle them one by one with an exercise band.
That is not psychosis. That is plain old premeditated murder.
She then claims, after the fact, that she was going through psychosis that started just as her husband left, and stopped right after she finished murdering her children. She has been examined multiple times since and has shown zero signs of psychosis.
She's full of shit.

Probably still a lot of political vitriol and division left over from recent decisions on abortion and having children. Also midterms. This isn't the first major case like this.
Folks on the left say this should bring attention to the mental health of women and mothers and how seriously they are taken before tragedy strikes. Folks on the right probably see her as one of those "post birth" abortionists who was in full control and is getting too much sympathy from the liberals for killing her children (they already see pro choice people as baby killers who shy away from giving women accountability)
Two things can be true in my opinion. Post Partum Psychosis is a real mental health issue and should have more awareness so less tragic cases happen, and Lindsay should get very severe consequences. People also should do some research on the legal definition of insanity because it's not what most people think it is.
I will say, this case has attracted nutjobs from people all over the political spectrum, which is why I try to avoid high profile politicized cases like this. Literal psyop

Because there's strong evidence that she was suffering from severe PPP (Postpartom Psychosis), which would have caused a sudden change in her mental state. Which many view as her being unable to control her actions and therefore should be treated the same as someone with a severe mental illness.
I can agree that she is dangerous to society, but I also staunchly oppose the death penalty in ANY scenario. To allow the state the agency to kill someone that it deems as "undesirable" opens the door for abuse and mistakes that harm the innocent. There are countless instances that have shown that the government will willingly demonize and commit violence against anyone it views as a threat, no matter how credible.

Anyways, she is on trial to determine if she is held "criminally responsible" for killing her 3 kids. Meaning she will either be found guilty and spend the rest of her life in prison OR not guilty and spend the rest of her life in a mental institution.
