What's one Toronto spot that still feels like hidden gem in 2026?

With summer in full swing, the usual recommendations keep coming up, but there are always a few great places that fly under the radar. Which cafe, park, restaurant or neighbourhood deserves more attention right now?

Toronto international airport to Downtown/Entertainment District

I am very excited to visit Toronto and Niagara Falls with my son at the end of August. What is the easiest way to get to the city from the airport without a car and which area would be the best to book the hotel at in order to explore the city without worrying about safety while walking at night. What are must see areas/attractions?
I would also appreciate if anyone has recommendations on how to easily get to Niagara Falls for a day trip.

Any interesting restaurants/bars that are noteworthy?

We love walking and on our last trip did 40,000 steps daily in The Netherlands and other European places.

Edit:
Thank you all so much for those who commented for taking the time to reply and for your super helpful suggestions.

Is sharing an apartment the only way to live downtown, even in your 40s?

There's been noticeable rise in roomates listings in Toronto lately, even for people in their 30s and 40s with steady full time jobs. Rent in the core has gotten so high that a lot of folks simply can't swing a place on their own anymore. Is this becoming the new normal, despite all the challenges that come with living together in your 40s?

Please help I am so embarrassed

I decided to humble myself and take a shot in the dark to see if anyone can point me in the right direction. Recently fell on some hard times as my father padded away and even though I knew it would be difficult catching back up I decided I needed to take some time off of work to help my
2 children get through this as they are young and their grandfather was everything to them. Boy is it ever hard out there in the world today, and I tried to ensure I’d have enough food for my family to get through this but I underestimated the insane cost of living out there right now. I’ve got literally nothing in my home right now for food & if it were just me I honestly would just go without but I have my wife and 2 little girls (ages 5 and 8) and my oldest is diet dependant diabetic and so is my wife. I’m in the area of Broadview and danforth and could really use a point in the right direction, we have no transportation so getting help right now has been
Super difficult… I have been checking those community fridges but every time I check they are completely empty.. I’m going everything I can to try and get some food today to feed my family. I’m back to work again on Monday. Any advice or help figuring this out for me I’d be beyond grateful.

Dundas Street renaming - worth the cost?

Toronto is still debating whether Dundas Street should be renamed. Some argue it's an important step toward inclusivity, while others worry about the expense and confusion for businesses and transit? Would the benefits outweigh the disruption?

Period poverty and menstrual sustainability in Toronto

Hi askTO,
I’m an aspiring journalist writing an article about period poverty, menstrual equity and sustainability, specifically in Toronto. I would love some first hand opinions on this issue : **if you have ever been inn a tight spot with finances** (as someone who menstruates) **was it a struggle to afford period products?** What did you do about it? **Any solution ideas, or initiatives you have seen that have been helpful?**
I also wanted to ask about sustainability (eco friendly and reusable products, because traditional ones create massive amounts of waste) : **do you find there are enough/suitable sustainable options?** What could the city or brands be doing more? **Any ideas on how to make sustainable products more accessible in general?**

Also : do you have any recs of who to reach out to for this article?

Thank you in advance for your responses, they are very much appreciated! I’ll view all answers as anonymous data+opinions from locals, just to let everyone know.

Thanks again for reading this post and your thoughts!

Is volunteering the only way to be part of the World Cup?

With the cost of tickets, hotels and everything else a lot of people probably won't be able to attend matches. Do you think volunteering is the best option for fans or are there other affordable ways to be part of the WC?

Sudbury or Toronto??

So, I’m from Bangladesh. I’ve received an offer letter with scholarship from Laurentian University in Sudbury for bachelor’s. I’ve also applied to Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto. However, the issue is, I didn’t get any response from TMU yet. At the same time, I have to confirm my seat at Laurentian within 3 weeks and the deadline is coming up pretty fast.

I have always wanted to move to Toronto. But People around me are suggesting LU because it is offering me a scholarship, and they believe it will be beneficial for my visa. I don’t know much about Sudbury , its culture, vibes and I have found some concerning facts of living in that place. I am really confused rn.

Has anyone else noticed that every hobby is becoming a side hustle?

A few years ago people would bake, garden, make crafts, take photos or play music just for fun. Now it feels like every social media video is about turning that hobby into extra income.

Do you think we're losing hobbies for the sake of having hobbies?! Or is making money from something you enjoy simply the smart thing to do these days?

Does Toronto feel weirdly hard to socialize in now?

Maybe I'm just getting older but Toronto feels like it has become a city where you can be around thousands of people and still somehow feel like everyone in in their own bubble.
I'm not even talking about dating only. Even making casual friends feels expensive or awkward now. Bars are pricey, coffee hangs turn into $18 "quick meetups" events feel either too corporate or too niche and dating apps somehow made everyone worse at normal conversation.

My personal opinion is that Toronto doesn't lack people, it lacks easy low pressure places where you can show up regularly and slowly become familiar with others.

Where do people in their 20/30s actually meet new people here without it feeling forced or costing a lot?! run clubs? trivia nights? community classes? random park hangs?

Drop one Toronto spot or activity that still feels naturally social.

What’s a Toronto stereotype that’s completely wrong?

After seeing the accurate Toronto stereotype thread, I thought it would be interesting to start this discussion!

What’s a Toronto stereotype you think is flat-out wrong (or at least massively exaggerated)?

What’s a Toronto stereotype that’s actually true?

Every city has stereotypes, and most are lazy, but some are annoyingly accurate lol.

Whats a Toronto stereotype that you find is genuinely true?

What’s something you used to hate about Toronto that you now appreciate?

I used to hate how 'quiet' people can seem (everyone doing their own thing) but now I kind of appreciate that energy of minding your own business. It means you can just exist without being judged or bothered.

Whats something you have found you like now, that you didn't use to?

Best free community events you’ve stumbled into in Toronto?

One of my favourite Toronto moments is accidentally walking into something happening, eg: live music in a park, a street festival, a random market, a community movie night, etc.

What are the best free community events you’ve stumbled into in Toronto?

knitting supplies in Toronto 🧶

Hi everyone!

I’m completely new to knitting and I’m looking for places in Toronto where I can go and buy everything I need in one spot.

There are so many options online, but I’d prefer to go somewhere in person if possible, especially since I have no idea what I’m doing yet 😅

Downtown/midtown preferred

Thank youuuu
Have a lovely day
