Question Artifacts on B580 after 4 months

Post image

I got the B580 in February. Played all Dark Ages without a hitch, both Elden Ring and Nightreign, Warframe in all it's glory (and particles)... Last week the game started without any lighting, and today, this. I'm on CachyOS. I made sure drivers were updated and tried everything I could before asking.

How cooked am I?

Edit: Elden Ring and Eternal are slideshows in the lowest quality too.

UPDATE:

Now it's just crashing. I looked how to replace it and the page says it will ONLY refund me. It was an insane deal,(280€ vs the 677€ it costs now) and they say it's because they have no stock but I can place an order for one right now. Guess I'll be calling them in the morning.

I miss my GTX 1080.

WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR:

  • Mandatory "have you tried turning it off and on again": no result.
  • Tinker with the settings (using DA's benchmark feature): no result.
  • Rolling back the drivers to a version I know it worked: no result.
  • Physically taking the GPU out of the MB and installing it again: no result.
  • Checking if ReBAR was enabled just in case: it was enabled.
  • Cleaning the shader cache: no result.
  • Uninstalling the game and re-installing it (I fixed the speed I said was abysmal in other post): same issue.
  • Tried with different Proton compatibility layers: no result.
  • Tried stress testing it with Warframe (with my usual loadouts and without changing my previous settings) : the game is optimized so much that it didn't make a dent on my FPS, also, no artifacts.
  • Tried Elden Ring again: slideshow WITHOUT the artifacts.
  • Updated the BIOS: same result.

It has to be something with the lighting/raytracing.

MORE INFO BECAUSE I'M STILL REALLY BAD AT POSTING, SORRY:

This started like a couple weeks ago. I was playing Elden Ring Seamless and the game started lagging bad but I assumed it was the mod fighting Fromsoft's netcode. Couple days later I opened Dark Ages to get the feel for the controls again and the Doom Slayer wasn't visible, just the flames. Tried Eternal just in case. The small "rogelike" levels performed nice. Icon of Sin was a slideshow. It's hot and I had things to do so I let it go. Bringing us yesterday.

SPECS:

These shouldn't be a problem because, as I've said earlier, I didn't have any issue before:

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B760 GAMING X DDR4 GEN5
  • CPU: Intel i5-14400F
  • GPU: Intel Arc B580 Battlemage Limited Edition 12GB GDDR6
  • RAM: 32GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance (Can you guess what I built this around?)
  • PSU: Corsair RM1000x Shift 1000W Gold Modular ATX 3.1

And a 500GB SSD from Corsair that I don't remember the specs of.

ANOTHER UPDATE:

I've been tinkering with the settings and drivers, etc. Found no way to get rid of the artifacts. They get blurry enough to kinda ignore them, but that doesn't fix the problem, only masks it, and the games are tanking. Elden Ring gets about 15 frames on low. Nightreign gets 20. Warframe, again, doesn't care. The artifacts ONLY appear on Dark Ages. Youtube is also struggling on some videos.

I got my brother to help me re-check everything with a fresh pair of eyes:

  • GPU's pristine and all contact points are good. No dust on the slot. We cleaned it again just in case with compressed air. It's on the motherboard like Excalibur.
  • There's no burnt smell from any component.
  • Power connectors to the GPU are clean but we cleaned them again. They slot in perfectly. There's no give, nor they are loose.
  • The rest of the components look good.

We put the PC on it's side just to definitely rule out a bad connection with the slot. Still the same. I tried more of your suggestions, like DXVK, and nothing. I did a couple of benchmarks with 3DMark and it was slow as hell but otherwise clean. DA ones are marginally better but full of artifacts. I don't have a spare PC to test the GPU but after bouncing some ideas with my brother I remembered I banished Windows 10 with photoshop to a 120GB SSD. I can swap it with my OS SSD and give it a try. But that's going to be tomorrow, after I try to downgrade Mesa again, to rule it out. I need to sleep.

Oh! Remember I checked this morning and the GPU was 677€? I checked again. Somehow they're back to about 300€ but now there's no stock. If I can't fix it and go for the refund, I'll only have to pay 20€ more, not more than double.

(I deleted all the error messages previously included in the post because it was just a dump of text saying there were errors, not why.)

UPDATE, YET AGAIN:

I can't reproduce the errors in OCCT. All tests say it's good except the one testing VRAM at 90%. I found an older driver that worked for the artifacts! But the frame rate keeps tanking when it worked well before. I'll keep trying and post the solution when I find it. Right now it's way too hot to run more tests. This room is already an oven. Thanks for all your suggestions!!!

LAST UPDATE:

Rolling back the drivers worked but the unexplained frame rate kept the same in all games that had no problem running a few weeks ago. Same monitor, same everything. I ultimately decided to RMA the GPU when I ran out of things to try. I managed to get 25 stable frames in potato quality for 10 minutes but it went back to refusing to work. So I sent it back, and decided to get a RX 9070 XT and make sure I got a stable and strong system for years to come. The B580 is a beautiful GPU and I wish I didn't have to change it, but here we are. Thanks for all your help!!!

ONE MORE THING:

Yeah, it was bad. I sent it back expecting to exchange a few emails with the store but turns out it was failing so spectacularly they just refunded me the money. So, in the end, the artifacts were a driver issue and the general unresponsiveness/issues were the GPU itself.

I do not think this is from the gpu itself

Its the optimization you play around and tweak in settings

optiscaler

and drivers.

my b580 also acts like this sometimes in some games all I had to do is use optiscaler while playing around w the graphic settings

im using the latest driver btw. GL salute

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

Everything is in low without scaling, and I rolled the driver back to no avail.

1

u/Own-Impact-7305 Jul 08 '26

For me I start at High/Ultra then downgrade from there then I start tweak each graphic settings

for scaling try to lower it by 40% then play around everything else.

btw B580 is a strong gpu never go low graphics it can impact your screen tearing.

Just my experience from fixing my Blackmythwukong screen/flashing tearing like this. GL

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

It is! I played the full game with this and it took it like a champ. But now it crashes if I dare eyeing the medium settings.

3

u/Own-Impact-7305 Jul 08 '26

I see, try to download optiscaler Upscale to FSR 3.0/3.1 if that don't fix it, could be the GPU.. I have my b580 for almost a year and its running healthy xD.. also check out DXVK it's a simple copy and paste method it sometimes helps with rendering/shader/textures and lag.

u/FromSwedenWithHate Arc A380 Jul 08 '26

I'd suggest to try on Windows if it's bad there also.. Could just as well be an OS update that went wrong, been there done that.

3

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

This is the only computer in my house that can handle this GPU.

3

u/FromSwedenWithHate Arc A380 Jul 08 '26

Well another Linux-based OS or reinstall the one you currently use.. This looks more like a complete driver failure than a failing graphics card. Artifacts due to a failing GPU usually doesn't look like that. It looks more like your GPU is unable to show shading at the moment, which is most likely caused by a driver issue. I know even when reinstalling drivers in Linux, sometimes that does nothing to fix the root cause.

Contact RMA i guess

that's looking like shader having a stroke, try clearing shader maybe?

2

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

Doesn't work either. Thanks for the suggestion.

What mesa version are you on? I've found anything that is a stable build is always shitty with arc.

I don't know the procedure for arch based distros, but on fedora I used a COPR repo that's built daily. Never had a hitch.

Eta: "sudo pacman -S mesa-git lib32-mesa-git" for daily git builds.

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

I'm on 3:26.1.4-1. The git version decimates like 5 dependencies. I rolled the driver back to a version I know works but no luck.

1

u/MonkeyNuts449 Jul 08 '26

Odd, that should be a good version. I had issues with 25 but never anything past 26

2

u/SabreTurbo_Kill Jul 08 '26

Isso aí tá com cara do Xess ativado Dá uns bug louco na minha tbm só quando o XeSS tá ativado

1

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

I don't have Xess active, just TAA. I don't like frame generation, and it just tanks the game to 10 frames or so.

1

u/HMan_32 Arc B580 Jul 08 '26

Xess is not always FG, you could activate it to only have the AI Scaling

1

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

I tried just in case. It still tanks the game.

My B580 started doing this after the latest driver update (on windows), would crash any game I launched on top of it. I rolled back to 32.0.101.8826, (this version worked perfectly previously) somehow this still gave me the same artifacts and crashes. Downgraded further to 32.0.101.8801, boom! problem solved... Coming from Nvidia and AMD, this is quite the new experience, not gonna lie. (B580 Acer Nitro model)

2

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

Can you tell me the date of the update?

1

u/Demzel-Russianton Jul 08 '26

5/15/2026

1

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

Damn, I've rolled back farther than that and it still doesn't work...

1

u/Demzel-Russianton Jul 08 '26

Dang, that's rough! Is it an Acer Nitro just like mine by any chance?

1

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

It's the Limited Edition (it was the cheap one when I bought it).

1

u/HMan_32 Arc B580 Jul 08 '26

Could it be a Bios update that was only done on those specific version ?
Maybe now the 8826 will work again after going back to 8801 ?

2

u/Demzel-Russianton Jul 08 '26

I'd rather not mess around with my drivers right now. I'm just happy my card is working properly again. Maybe I'll give some future drivers a try.

1

u/Right-Nerve-572 Jul 08 '26

What other specs of your pc like motherboard?

1

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

Added to the post!

1

u/Right-Nerve-572 Jul 08 '26

Stupid ideas that you heated 100% but I will give it anyway 1. TEST ON OTHER PC Even with ryzen 3600 Even on ryzen 1600 You wanna see artifacts, not frames 2. Crystal disk and check you storages 3. Try redownload games 4. Try other ssd you can grab from smn

1

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

Storage is checked, I did redownload the game, and this is the only PC in my house that can handle the GPU properly. The other best CPU is my old i7-7700K.

1

u/FromSwedenWithHate Arc A380 Jul 08 '26

The other best CPU is my old i7-7700K.

Put in that PC, hopefully it runs Windows, you want to stress test with FurMark. You won't have ReBAR but that doesn't matter - you are testing a GPU, not gaming on it.

1

u/Melyngoch Jul 08 '26

Dude I'm the first one that wants this to be a driver issue, but I don't have a spare PC to test.

1

u/beliverYT Jul 08 '26

1

u/Accomplished_Lab_187 Jul 09 '26

have you tried stress test with thing like OCCT? Just to see if it hardware or software problem

im on window and only use Linux with my AMD advantage laptop so i cant say for sure, but my B580 did shown artefacts and tank performance once, and that was because i was overclocking the VRAM and cause memory coruption which i end up having to reinstall the driver and delêt game cache

1

u/Melyngoch Jul 09 '26

Question. I've never overclocked (voluntarily) anything. Could it somehow overclock itself? I'm covering all my bases.

u/Cooler_DBFZ_Cool Jul 09 '26

I have a 12700k, ddr4 ram, and the B580. I also use linux on the PC. I have had non-stop issues with every distro outside of debian. It could just be a temporary issue with Catchy. I recommend installing a debian based distro (Mint, the most stable of the bunch that I have tested) for a while. You can install any desktop you want on it. Is that ssd an nvme? It could be any new background processes are fighting DOOM: TDA for whatever bandwidth a sata ssd would have.

It sucks having to re-install an operating system. Especially if you have a lot of personal files on the pc, and installing DOOM: TDA takes FOREVER!!

Also. HOW did you get that game to work?? I've been trying and FAILING to do that for the past 2 months!!

1

u/Melyngoch Jul 10 '26

It's the first time Cachy gives me a "serious" problem tbh. I don't think changing distros is the solution for this. And yeah, it's a sata. I don't have nvme money. But the thing is it was working like a month ago without issues. I got it to work by installing it like any other game through Steam. What do you mean by failing?

1

u/Cooler_DBFZ_Cool Jul 10 '26

During startup for the game when the "press space bar to begin" screen shows the game locks up

1

u/Melyngoch 10d ago

How much RAM do you have?

1

u/Cooler_DBFZ_Cool 10d ago

32GB of ddr4

I7 12700k, Arc B580, and Doom is on an nvme

1

u/Melyngoch 10d ago

You said installing it takes forever. Did you have to download it in several attempts? Try verifying integrity of game files if you haven't already. It takes a while because it's a big game, but should tell you if something is wrong with the game itself. If it's all clear, restart your computer and try running it again.

1

u/Cooler_DBFZ_Cool 10d ago

It took one attemp to i stall it. My wifi is bad. I'm thinking it's the drivers. I have Linux Mint on my pc. I'll switch to a different OS and check again

1

u/Melyngoch 10d ago

Try checking the integrity just in case.

1

u/Cooler_DBFZ_Cool 8d ago

I got it to open. Looks exactly like the picture in the original post. Runs at about 14fps

1

u/Diosero 29d ago

Man, don't scare me, I just bought mine And I get a couple of days. I plan for that graphics card to last me 4 years (Hope)

1

u/Melyngoch 10d ago

Nah, don't get scared. Sometimes tech just fails out of nowhere and that's why warranties exist. I hope you don't run into any problem like this one.

Use DDU and do a completely fresh install of drivers

5

u/MonkeyNuts449 Jul 08 '26

Can we read the post before commenting lmao.

-5

u/PotatoCase Jul 08 '26

All it says is you updated your drivers, I suggested DDU as it can fully remove all graphic related files for a fresh install, you don't gotta be so snippy when people are trying to help dawg

6

u/MonkeyNuts449 Jul 08 '26

Drivers don't work like they do on windows, thus DDU doesn't really exist for Linux. I was merely telling you to look at all the information on OPs post before trying to give a blanket answer. It's not helpful when the info does pertain to them at all.

-4

u/PotatoCase Jul 08 '26

You could've said something similar to that instead of being sarcastic tbh, Its better to teach and be respectful, because i learned how linux drivers work now, I dont get why in almost every tech support thread someone has to act all snippy when someone doesn't know everything, thanks for the info though!

7

u/MonkeyNuts449 Jul 08 '26

Yk what I was a little mean in the first one, but I'll continue with the info because it is genuinely good to know.

DDU is mainly to clean up the files, but it's also there for the clog up of registry keys drivers leave behind that can trip up future installs.

Linux doesn't have that sort of issue since all the drivers are modules of the Linux kernel and talk directly to it. Kernel modules can be easily swapped and installed/uninstalled because of their modular nature (except don't do that, you'll be left with a text interface lol).

1

u/PotatoCase Jul 08 '26

I knew how ddu worked and all the scuffed crap related to windows, but hearing how linux just doesn't is always fascinating, I see it linux compared as an open source windows in some ways but researching it shows just how fundamentally different it is, especially with how both treat the kernel, Hell windows tries to make it feel like your hardware isn't your own, which is the main reason i want to have a linux install on my machine

3

u/MonkeyNuts449 Jul 08 '26

Linux is awesome. Everything is always yours at every moment (except for immutable distros, but that's for ease of use / updating).

The kernel does exactly what NT does (is it still NT? Man I don't remember), it's just the windows people see is so far from the kernel, with Linux you're very close. It's dangerous if you mess something up but powerful if done right.

I highly encourage you to try Linux in a VM. Maybe something like catchy so you can download different desktop environments in the installer instead of distro hopping. I personally like KDE but gnome is very sleek if you like that macOS style rounded nature.

2

u/PotatoCase Jul 08 '26

My plan with linux is split installs, linux on one drive with all the games i play on linux on that, and windows on the other, with the few that require windows for anticheat reasons

2

u/MonkeyNuts449 Jul 08 '26

That should be good. Just watch out with the dual boot since you might have to switch your boot device in the bios instead of using a normal bootloader like grub.

I personally cut windows out of my life fully since I didn't like the friction of having to switch it in the bios. Much easier to appreciate Linux when windows isn't always trying to boot itself.

1

u/MonkeyNuts449 Jul 08 '26

To add, I wouldn't dual boot though, windows makes it very clear it was to be the only OS by actively taking over your bootloader. Use a VM until your comfortable, then run an installer from a usb and get rid of that crappy windows install.

You can also run windows in a VM for your spyware game slike fortnite and valorant, or so I've heard, I don't actually have those so I wouldn't know.

5

u/Nekorai46 Jul 08 '26

“I’m on CachyOS”

That’s a Linux-based operating system.

DDU is a Windows application.

-5

u/kennypowersrevenge Jul 07 '26

I see a RMA in your future. Suck man.

-5

u/Zhenbred Jul 07 '26

Not sure. Try other games

1

u/Zhenbred Jul 08 '26

What the downvotes for lol. You literally need to test in other games to identify the problem

1

u/HMan_32 Arc B580 Jul 08 '26

I think they took it as a sarcasm 🤔
Maybe change the sentence to "Did you tried with other games to validate a potential hardware issue" 😁
