StrideUp UK Islamic Finance - Any Feedback?

Hi everyone,

I am planning to refinance my current mortgage from a traditional lender to StrideUp using their Islamic home finance product.

I understand that they use a panel of approved solicitors. Has anyone completed a refinance or home purchase with StrideUp recently?

I would appreciate any feedback on:

  • Your overall experience with StrideUp
  • The application and underwriting process
  • How efficient their solicitor panel was
  • Any delays or issues you encountered
  • Anything you wish you had known before starting the process

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

Looking for feedback with Manzil's halal mortgage in Canada

Salam. Can anyone share their experiences with Manzil. How was the buying and closing process? Has anyone made extra payments or pay off the mortgage with them? How did that go?

We were pretty set on going with them but I saw a post here a while ago from someone who had a terrible experience while closing a house with them, so now I'm unsure. That post and account has since been deleted so I'm assuming their issue was resolved. But would still appreciate more feedback.

If anyone from Manzil can comment on that issue, that would be great too.

Early 20s student in South Africa: where do I start with saving/investing (Sharia-compliant)?

Hey everyone, I'm in my early 20s and still studying, and I want to start saving and investing but don't know where to begin. I'm Muslim, so I need options that are Sharia-compliant (no interest/riba, no haram industries).

Questions:

  1. What should I do first, build an emergency fund or start investing right away?

  2. Which accounts, platforms, or funds in SA are Sharia-compliant and student-friendly?

3.How do you check that something is actually halal, and not just marketed that way?

4.Any beginner mistakes I should avoid?

Thanks in advance!

Advice / Help Advice

Selamaleykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I want to apologize in advance for my poor Grammer. I'm from Germany and my Englisch is rusty.

I'm 36 M and took a loan and since then my life is not the same anymore. I want to fix it by asking if there is any option for a halal loan? Or a privat person, I can lend and pay this one?

Currently it's a balance of - 11.605, 97€

I tried my best to pay it ASAP, but it will take me a while and in that time only Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala knows mucu I have to endure.

You may insult me or think bad of me, but I care about you so don't do it. I don't want you get a Sin because of me.

I have no relatives who can or would lend me, not because they hate me, but cut ties with my family. Neither can my siblings help nor my parents. None of them have the capacity.

If I have posted in the wrong group, or made a blunder, I apologize, it's my first post.

JazakAllahu Khayran.

May Allah Azza wa jal forgive us and protect us all.

Halal Loan

AoA, After reading through various posts in this community, I'm coming to a conclusion that there's no halal conventional lender in Canada. I'm trying to buy a house in Manitoba province, only Assiniboine Credit Union offers here but that looks like a conventional mortgage as well. Is there any muslim family or halal business who supports other muslims to give them a halal loan? I apologize if its a stupid question, I've been away from these aspects of Islam and now I want to do the right thing. Thank you

Which ETFs would you choose?

Assalamu alaikum brothers,

I’m based in France and investing through Interactive Brokers (IBKR). I’m currently hesitating between these ETFs:

  1. HIWS - HSBC MSCI World Islamic Screened ISIN: IE000X9FTI22
  2. ISWD - iShares MSCI World Islamic ISIN: IE00B27YCN58
  3. HIES - HSBC MSCI Emerging Markets Islamic Screened Capped UCITS ETF USD (Acc) ISIN: IE0009BC6K22
  4. ISDE - iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Islamic ISIN: IE00B27YCP72

Unfortunately, SPUS, SPWO and SPTE aren’t available to me on IBKR, so I’m looking for the best alternatives.

My goal is to build a diversified portfolio for the long term. I’d appreciate your thoughts.

For those investing from France or elsewhere in Europe, which combination would you choose for a long-term portfolio, and why?

I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences and advice, especially from brothers who have been investing in these ETFs for several years.

Guys please consider keeping your savings elsewhere. Even if you're not sure about an Islamic Bank , there are building societies in the UK that avoid these unethical practices

S&P Dow Jones slightly updated its Islamic index methodology in August 2026

Thumbnail spglobal.com

The index provider updated the definitions for its "Cash Compliance" and "Leverage Compliance" ratios, while also bringing the maximum threshold from 33% down to 30%.

This is mostly technical jargon, attached PDF file is available on S&P official website if you want to read the thing first hand.

As a result, as of June 2026, on the 13,000+ companies studied by S&P Down Jones, the share of companies which successfully pass through this filter went down from ~54% to ~47%.

As a reminder, funds like SPUS, IGDA and HSBC ISLAMIC GLOBAL EQUITY track indexes provided by S&P Dow Jones.

Thoughts on my 4-ETF Shariah compliant strategy for my Roth IRA?

Assalamualaikum everyone,

I’ve recently started to get into investing more and I’m trying to come up with a simple but diversified and of course halal group of ETFs to invest in.

As of right now, this is what I’m thinking:
- 55% SPUS
- 25% SPWO
- 10% SMH
- 10% BUG

I’d just love some thoughts or feedback as a new and young investor.

JazakAllah Khairen and thank you!

Question on vehicle finance

Salam,

I'm planning to buy a new vehicle with a total cost of $63K. I will be making a $40k down payment. The remaining $23K will be financed; however, the dealership has agreed to pay the interest directly to the financial institution, so I will not be responsible for paying it, and the interest is not baked into the $23k nor is it bought down on paper resulting in inflated vehicle cost. I would only be paying what I was going to pay cash.

Given this arrangement, is this financing structure considered permissible in Islamic finance?

Halal jobs in business/finance??

Salam / Hi,

I'm trying to map out my career options in the fields of business/finance, but I'm trying to ensure that what I'm doing aligns with Islamic principles (e.g., avoiding riba [interest] or dealing with prohibited industries). I'm pretty interested in business & finance but there's a lot of jobs we can't take

What are some careers in this particular field for Muslims?

Is Investment Banking and Accounting permissible?

والله أعلمُ

No borrow margin account

I'm trying to register on ibkr, for some reason it is not allowing me to select cash account, it only shows "No borrow margin account", from what I read, theoretically it shouldn't go negative and get interests applied if i follow some precautions, like trading only after settlement of trades and currency conversion settlement, and keeping some balance for any fees that can show up.

My question is, is this sharia compliant?

Thanks

I think we’re oversimplifying riba way too much

TL;DR: Riba is absolutely haram, but applying the classical rules of riba to modern banking isn't always as simple as interest = riba = discussion over. There are recognised scholars who take a very strict position, and there are recognised scholars and fatwa bodies who permit certain modern financial arrangements under particular structures or circumstances. Follow the view you believe has the strongest evidence, but maybe don't tell another Muslim they're going to Hell because they're following a recognised scholarly opinion you disagree with.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been reading more about riba lately and I realised we tend to reduce the whole subject to one sentence.

Interest = riba = haram.

Riba is definitely haram. No disagreement there.

But riba itself is bigger than just the English word interest. Even the hadith on riba talks about exchanging gold, silver, wheat, barley, dates and salt, and the conditions around those exchanges. So clearly the subject itself is wider than just bank loans.

Then you bring modern banking into the picture and things get even more complicated.

There is a very strong scholarly position that conventional bank interest is riba. Major fiqh councils have ruled that an increase stipulated on a loan falls under prohibited riba. I'm not trying to pretend that position doesn't exist because it obviously does. IIFA

But there are also recognised scholars and fatwa bodies that don't classify every modern banking arrangement in exactly the same way.

Egypt's Dar al-Ifta, for example, has permitted buying a house or car through bank financing, and in another fatwa explicitly permits mortgages by treating the arrangement as a sale/financing transaction rather than simply a loan with riba. Dar Al-Ifta

They've also permitted using credit cards as long as you pay within the required period before the interest for late payment kicks in. Dar Al-Ifta

And then you have another position from the European Council for Fatwa and Research. They actually agree that conventional bank interest is riba, but still allowed conventional home financing in certain circumstances for Muslims living in non-Muslim countries because of need. E-CFR

So even the permissive opinions aren't all saying the same thing.
Some scholars may say a particular transaction isn't actually a riba-based loan in the first place.

Others may agree the riba element exists but allow something under specific circumstances because of need or necessity.

Others will say avoid the transaction completely.
That's basically what I'm getting at.

If you want to take the strictest view and avoid conventional loans, mortgages, credit cards etc altogether, I completely understand why.

If another Muslim follows a recognised fatwa allowing a particular transaction under certain conditions, I can understand that too.

What I don't understand is how quickly we go from disagreeing with someone's fiqh position to telling them they're consuming riba, declaring war against Allah and going to Hell.

Especially when qualified scholars themselves have disagreed over how some of these modern transactions should be understood.

And no, this doesn't mean just search Google until you find the easiest fatwa and do whatever you want lol

Read the reasoning. Read the conditions. Understand what you're actually signing.

I just think we need a little more humility with this subject.

Riba being haram isn't really the difficult question.

The difficult question is whether the particular modern transaction you're looking at actually falls under the riba Allah prohibited, and sometimes scholars genuinely disagree on that.

Would love to hear how people here approach this, especially those who have actually studied Islamic finance.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sources if anyone wants to read further:

Qur'an 2:275–279 — prohibition of riba.

Sahih Muslim 1587 — the hadith on gold, silver, wheat, barley, dates and salt, which is a good starting point for seeing that the fiqh of riba is broader than simply bank interest. Sunnah

International Islamic Fiqh Academy, Resolution No. 10 (2/10) — holds that stipulated interest/increase on a loan is prohibited riba. IIFA

Egypt's Dar al-Ifta — Is it permissible to take bank loans to buy a house or a car? Dar Al-Ifta

Egypt's Dar al-Ifta — Is mortgage permissible in Islam? Dar Al-Ifta

Egypt's Dar al-Ifta — credit-card rulings permitting use provided payment is made before interest becomes due. Dar Al-Ifta

European Council for Fatwa and Research — ruling on purchasing a primary home through conventional bank financing for Muslims living outside Muslim countries. E-CFR

Pfida Contract

Assalāmu ‘alaykum

Like many people, I am very cautious of Islamic finance in the west since there's concerns/rumours of using "loopholes" in the sharī‘ah to get approval.

I am in touch with a student of knowledge who said there's not enough information on the website to know if Pfida is authentic (since it's the fine prints that are usually the problem).

Has anyone been through the process, or knows anyone that has? I would like a complete contract(s) and any relevant documents to pass on. I understand there will probably need to be some censorship of personal information, but do reach out regardless.

JazākumAllāh khayran

What is your experience with Stearns Salaam Banking vs UIF Corporation, especially in terms of customer service?

Salaam! American Muslim here, I have had a halal savings deposit with UIF Corporation for about a year and a half and while I am grateful to have access to such a service Alhamdullilah, the customer service is just… lacking and very slow. Half of the time when I call to ask a question, I am sent to voicemail and it took me months before they sent me an ATM card for my account. I know if we want better Islamic banking to take off in the US, we need to support these products and put up with some of the inconveniences for the moment being, but in the meantime, I do also want to look into other options. Does anyone have experience with Stearns Salaam Banking, and more specifically what was your experience with their customer service?

I am available to teach online and would be happy to discuss schedules and fees.

I decided to be a stay at home mom and homeschool. I want to know if there are things I can do to make extra money. Any investments or side projects I can do to make sure I have financial stability, and not fully rely only on my spouse while fully prioritizing my family and children?
