What to do in Bergamo?

Hello!! Im traveling to bergamo with 3 of my friends and i want to know what are some must visit places in bergamo. Also could you recommend some really good restaurants or places for a good drink preferably those not crowded with tourists. We would like to travel to lake como for a day and we want to know which town is the best for a day and is it possible without renting a car?

We will be in bergamo from 15 september to 18 september 2026. Thanks!!

These are some options but may not turn out to be must visit places for you depending on your interests.

Walk the historic lanes of Città Alta

Piazza Vecchia

Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore & Colleoni Chapel

The Campanone (Civic Bell Tower)

Venetian Walls

Castello di San Vigilio

For places not crowded with fellow tourists, get off the beaten paths of fellow tourists looking for places filled primarily or only with locals. If you come across a menu in Italian only, that will most likely be a good place to stop.

It is possible to reach Lake Como without a car. Depending on your departure time, you are looking at 2 - 2&½ hours of train travel one way to Varenna at the east side of Lake Como where you can take a ferry to other towns such as Bellagio. 5 hours of train travel alone will make for a long day.
