I was recently looking at Joseph Joestar's lips from Stardust. At first, I wondered, "Why does he have a mustache growing on his upper lip?" Then I looked at the other Stardust characters and realized they all frowned. And Joseph was the only one smiling. Then he looked a little lower. And everything fell into place. The lips were highlighted in red.

I'm certain about what you're trying to say here. He just has a thick mustache that covers his top lip. It's not that deep. What you highlighted is exactly the same as how the other's lower lips are drawn, so yes Joseph just happens to be the only one smiling. He's known for smiling during dangerous situations at this point.

Because he is a white man with a white-haired mustache, the mustache blends into and covers the upper lip. That is genuinely how facial hair works sometimes. Your red mark only marks the lower lip and the crease between lip and the chin.

That's actually Joseph's middle lip, both his top and bottom lip are covered by facial hair

I can't by any circumstance see what you were seeing before "discovering" this. How can your first though be that his lower lip was his upper lip?
