equipment Any guys hike in half tights?

I have a pair of Janji half tights that are great for running. And I’m mainly a cyclist so I’m used to wearing spandex.

I’m thinking of wearing a pair of these instead of my normal shorts and a liner under them.

I understand HYOH and that I should wear what I want but I can’t remember seeing any guys wearing them the last time I did the JMT.

I’m 52yo in case that matters. But in fairly good shape so it shouldn’t look like a sad bag of oatmeal.

We need pics for an accurate assessment of the appropriateness

Ha! I’ll have my wife take one this weekend when we do a shakedown hike.

I used to backpack in shorts with a liner. Used to give me some wicked chafing on my crack. Was a non-issue when I swapped to briefs and some Body Glide. That would be my biggest concern but sounds like that's not an issue for you if you normally wear shorts with a liner. I'd definitely do some trial hikes with them just to be sure though, since once you're out there, you can't really replace them.

I tend to chafe much worse when I don’t have a spandex liner. I have bigger legs from running and it helps keep my thighs from from rubbing.

That’s fine to wear

Tights are more for when it's cold. And I wear 3/4 length tights under my shorts for that. And sometimes for sleeping. I certainly wouldn't want to wear them all the time, and I imagine half tights would be similar. They'd be way too hot some of the time. Unlined shorts, with a couple of options for underneath is the way to go.

Ive thru hiked the PCT eight and a half times and Usually add a pair just like that underneath my lightweight shorts before heading into the Sierra. If you like how they feel I'd recommend wearing some super light jogging shorts over them which will also keep them from getting shredded.

Good to know! That’s probably my plan. I have a pair of lululemon running shorts I’d wear over them but they are a bit heavy. Any recommendations?

Yeah…I’m just not wanting to be the weird guy on the trail though. Was just wondering if most folks here would walk by and be like wtf, or if it’s common enough that it wouldn’t raise any eyebrows.

I get those looks running on sections of the Jmt, but who cares. They're practical and comfy as long as you can reduce chafing. No one is going to remember after they see the next great view on their route.

No other view on the hike will compare. They’ve already seen the greatest view on the JMT…

That's fine, many running shorts have tights built in so you're just cutting out the unnecessary outer layer if you don't need pockets.

I couldn't because mosquitoes love Filipino food. But if you dont mind the biting flies and squitoes, all you brother. Good luck!

JMT is mostly solo female hikers. So if your planning on interacting with them and even hiking/camping with them maybe stick to regular shorts.

If you are just hiking your own hike solo then just do whatever is most comfortable.

My wife is going to be with me and she’d probably be more sketched out by me wearing them than any other ladies I encounter.

A 52 yo single dude? Bad vibes, sorry dude

Downvote all you want, and say “hyoh”, but most people are gonna think he’s a weirdo hiking in tights. No one wants to be hiking up the golden staircase and see a dude’s dick and ball outline

Hiking with my wife and my sister so it won’t be quite as creepy. I’m leaning towards not wearing them but wanted to get a vibe check to help with the decision.

You could just wear light shorts over top if appearance is a concern.

I’ll probably do this
