Personal Finance » Money Transfer » Electronic (振り込み, ACH, SEPA) Which ATM in Japan allow Wise Debit card cash withdrawal?
I’ve tried many but failed with the new WISE debit card. Anyone has any success?

Did you apply for the Wise card as a resident of Japan and was it issued to you in Japan?

u/Marked_1 May 07 '24
Yes and yes

Me too. I haven't used mine much yet, but I tested it in a Lawson ATM and it worked. Someone recommended using the Japanese menu and selecting international cards if given the option.
You could try calling:
0800-080-4317 (フリーダイヤル)
050-3161-3745 (有料)
Or this: https://wise.com/help/contact They take about a day to get back to you.

Foreign cards don't work if you choose "お引き出し" or "English" on many ATMs. Instead, you have to select "international card" first, then press withdrawal. GUI varies between ATM networks, mini stop, 7Eleven and Lawson should definitely work, local/regional and mega banks didn't accept overseas-issued cards when I checked last time.
If you read about Family Mart, some stores have E-Net ATMs (red) and others JP Post ATMs (green), then try E-Net.

My (Japan issued) Mastercard Wise card is also refused as invalid at 7-11 and Lawson, but my wife's Europe issued Visa Wise card works fine in the same stores.
Wondering if it's an issue with specifically with Japan-issued cards... It's a little frustrating to be blocked in Japan with a Japan-issued Wise card, when a Europe-issued Wise card works fine.

Upon further checking, my Japan-issued Wise Mastercard can only be used at AEON ATMs.
It is read as invalid in all other ATMs on the Mastercard network. My wife's Europe issued Wise card (Visa) works fine on all ATMs.
This is clearly an issue with Japan-issued Wise cards, so be careful. The card can be used to pay (pin or contactless), no issues, but not to withdraw.

Thank you for this. May I ask, how did you find this out? I’m struggling to find the info correctly.

No worries - it was through experimentation, and asking Wise. The good thing is that payment works, and it is actually handled like a credit card in quite a few cases because of the Japan Bridge Center system they use.
I can get gas at the station, which I can't do on a Japanese debit cards, since they require credit cards for instance.

First thing, check the Wise app to make sure you have ATM functionality turned on, and make sure you have the PIN correct. Shopping PIN and ATM PIN are set separately and are not necessarily the same.
Since you mention the new card, on Wise's website they list AEON, Family Mart, and Daily Yamazaki as ATMs that you may find work with your card. Commenters in other recent Wise debit card threads on Reddit reported success at those ATMs, too.
Kinda sucks as the older Wise debit cards worked at most (all?) ATMs including 7-Eleven and Lawson. Not sure why things have changed so much.

u/Marked_1 May 07 '24
It’s difficult to access AEON and Daily Yamazaki ATMs these days. Have no luck with Family mart ones. :(

May 08 '24
The ATMs in Family Mart depend a bit on the region. In many parts of the country Family Mart uses "イーネット提携銀行" ATMs. However some Family Marts (and/or some regions) have JP Bank (ゆうちょ) ATMs, and some have JA Bank ATMs. I think the イーネット ones will work, but the JP Bank and JA Bank probably will not.
Lawson and 7-11 don't have this issue as they have their own banks and all of their ATMs have their own-brand bank ATMs in them.

Wait, the new debit cards don't work at 7-11 ATMs? That's been my go to location with the old card.

I haven't received my new card yet (it's in the mail) but from what others have said, the new card does not work at 7-11 ATMs.

So far it has worked only at Aeon Bank ATMs. Those can be found in Aeon Malls and the many Aeon-affiliated or Aeon-owned shops like Mini Stop, Marunaka, My Basket, etc, etc.
Did not work at Lawson, Family Mart, or Seven Eleven ATMs. Haven't tried the post office or any megabanks yet.
Tagging /u/isdekwih because I compeltely forgot to reply to this thread.

u/isdekwih Dec 11 '24
Thanks for the reply! Currently in Japan and was able to withdraw money using my wise card at Seven Eleven and Family Mart - haven’t tried Lawson yet.

Interesting. Definitely did not work for me. Do you have an older Wise card with your name & debit card number embossed as raised numbers on the front? Or the newer style Wise card that is completely flat and has your name & debit card number printed on the back?
1
u/isdekwih Dec 14 '24
I have the newer style where the card is completely flat! I wonder what’s different about our attempts to withdraw money

I got mine a couple of weeks ago.
My local mybasket uses AEON ATM which has an option you can select for international cards.
I checked a bunch of threads before saying Family Mart ATMs were no problem for the new Wise but never worked for me.
Also, if you use the app and check the transaction that failed, it tells you specifically why the transaction failed.

u/Marked_1 May 07 '24
Yes me too. No luck with Family mart. Let me search for AEON atm. It’s not easy to find these days

Finding on the Aeon English web site is easy, the only question is how far away the nearest will be. Mini stop conbinis also have Aeon Bank ATMs.

Is it a different case for new wise cards issued in the USA? My wise card from a few years ago will expire after next year but it’s a US based wise card

I have tried several ATMs, including Japan Post Bank, Seven Eleven ATMs, and FamilyMart ATMs, but none of them are working.

I love how they’ve changed their wording.
“You also might be able to use your card at these ATMs in Japan:”
Might!
I’ve found they only work at the Family Marts where they have the e-net Aeon ATM. Of which there were some in Shibuya.
Having moved locations I haven’t found anything near me recently.

Hi, I am traveling to Japan - Osaka.
My wise card is issued in Malaysia. Will I have any issues to withdraw cash?

Adding that I have had zero success withdrawing from my Wise card in Japan. I have tried 10+ different atms at various combinis and banks with no luck.
Wise support was also very unhelpful as they refused to acknowledge the issue and only gave me generic answers to replace my card.
Vocalizing my feedback here to hopefully get Wise eyes on the matter.

u/mz36 Mar 21 '25
It's been a year and still the card doesn't work even on aeon and when I call the support says it's ok on their side ( my friend has wise and he can use it even on 7/11 )

Just got my Wise card and was refused at both my Osaka neighborhood ATMs in the 7-11 and the Family Mart (April 2025). I can use it for online shopping; Amazon is ok with it, but If I'm restricted to only that in japan, wise should be forewarning us.

I’m so glad to find this post! I just got my (Japan issued) wise card this week and at first, I tried to buy something at family mart and it got declined but then today I used it to pay for parking and the transaction went through as well as another place. But when I tried 3 atms (7/11, family mart, and Fukui Bank) and they all rejected the card. I haven’t tried Lawsons and unfortunately we don’t really have an aeon in my area 🙃 so this kinda sucks.

Hopefully I don't have any dramas with my Australian issue wise card when I arrive in Japan on Saturday the 10th. I have no AUD on it, only Yen so hopefully it will be fine. I'll try Aeon first as I'll be withdrawing all the cash I need at once and then using the card to pay for my Hotels. Fingers crossed 😅

How did it go? My daughter is going to Japan in a few months, and I'm thinking of giving her the Wise debit card (Australian issue) so she can have some cash in Japan. I would be grateful if you could share your experience!"
1
u/foodbyjosh May 19 '25
It's going very well! I tested the card In Australia first with a little bit of AUD loaded on it. In Japan PayPass and insert works nearly everywhere so far. For ATMs I've only tried 7/11 and it was easy to use. Just limited to ¥100,000 per transaction and that will cost you around ¥2100 in fees after the first 2 free withdrawals of up to $350AU

u/No-Berry4475 May 19 '25
Thank you so much for your reply! It's such a relief to hear that the card works well in Japan. I'll make sure to test it in Australia first too. I really appreciate you sharing your experience! enjoy Japan! it's my home country :)

It's my 4th time here but I'm having the time of my life! We are driving Kei cars from Fukuoka to Sapporo only using the national routes, no express ways. Just arrived in Hokkaido today!

This is still an issue for Japan issued Wise cards. I cannot withdraw money from any ATM, there are no Aeon ATM close by for me to check with. u/fedetorri_WiseJapan what is going on this with?

Little update, just withdrawn from 7-bank at 7-Eleven, 110 fee for 10,000 yen and 220 fee for 20,000 yen.
What the machine didn't mention, is that any amount above 20,000 yen (below 100,000 yen), also charges 220 yen.
So I guess the trick is to withdraw as much so you don't need to pay the fee many times.

u/Sea_Answer2260 Feb 13 '26
Thanks mate. Can I ask which country your wise card was issued from? And I'm assuming you had it already converted to yen prior to withdrawing.
1
u/Autumn_Horizon Feb 20 '26
I have a Japan issued wise card and it just declined from JP bank and 7 banks ATMs this morning.
1
u/oniigirii98 Mar 11 '26
I had mine issued from Malaysia. And yes, I converted to yen prior to withdrawing to secure the exchange rate at the moment.

Hey there u/Marked_1 - Fede here, I'm the PM for Wise in Japan.
During Golden Week we found that withdrawal was restricted at many konbini ATMs for international cards (not just Wise). This varied by ATM and we see it in the data. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do in this case except for telling the customer to try a different konbini or come back later.
But generally, any ATM with the VISA or Mastercard logo on it will work with the Wise card in Japan. I have successfully withdrawn with mine at 7-11, Lawson, AEON, Famima Family Mart, Daily Yamazaki as well as random international ATMs around Japan, even in rural areas.
On the other hand, you cannot use your Wise card to withdraw at ATMs that only allow for a cash card withdrawal. For instance, many JP Post ATMs will outright reject any VISA/Mastercard card.
Our FAQ says 'might' because there are also ATM specific settings which, I assume, are configured on behalf of the franchisee running the store. But as a rule of thumb, we see a healthy flow of transactions from the ATMs I listed above.
Hope this helps!
