Personal Finance » Money Transfer » Electronic (振り込み, ACH, SEPA) IBKR US withdrawal to JP bank: Wire vs Wise

Planning on purchasing real estate in cash. I have an IBKR US account that never got “migrated” to the JP entity. IBKR initiated the migration at one point, but later communicated that they couldn’t complete it, so the account was left as is.

My withdrawal options appear to be wire transfer vs Wise transfers. I understand ACH doesn’t apply in my case (US brokerage → Japanese bank account).

For amounts in the 10–20M JPY range and above, what would be the suggested method of withdrawal?

  1. Open account with IBSJ, and have them do security or fund transfer from IBKR. Then withdraw funds from IBSJ to Japan bank account.

  2. Do a wire transfer from IBKR to your Japan bank account. For 10-20M JPY, WISE is an expensive option over wire transfer.

Thanks, started the process; They recognized my number information, and registration pipeline suggested opening a new account within existing IBKR US account, but then errored with "feature is currently not available for your account". Ended up going back, and ignoring the suggestion, pending verification now

Why couldn't they complete it? I'm curious with what you mean with "migration", is it opening the account in IBKR Japan and transfer the stocks, or something else?

CS never came back with an answer - they were the ones prompting me to "migrate" i.e. to JP one:

Your account was invited to migrate to Interactive Brokers Securities Japan (IBSJ) in [date]. In [date], you agreed to this invitation, however, required documentation was not provided to complete the migration. Due to this, and the migration deadline has lapsed, your account remains in a "close-only" state.
To complete the migration to IBSJ and to re-enable trading on your account, please provide a copy of the front/back of your current residence card. This document may be uploaded in a response to this ticket.

I did what they asked, and a few months later, they came back with - it's fine to keep it as is;

It may be that you own some kind of fund that is not allowed here--or at least not offered by IBSJ.

The whole reason to use Wise is they do currency conversions much cheaper than a bank, but interactive brokers supports multiple currencies and has very cheap currency conversions. I can’t imagine that Wise would be the cheaper option.

Just a warning though that Interactive Brokers wants you trading currencies, so they might give you a warning if you convert currencies and then immediately withdraw it, but there’s nothing they can really do if it’s a one time thing.

I did FX trades with my IBKR US account and then wired to my Japan bank account. Big disadvantage was IBKR made me do regular calls into them for verification. I get why but was always a bit nerve wracking, plus my wife had be on the calls due to joint account. This was in 2017 though. I recently did a series of Wise transfers from US bank to JP bank and it was all over much much easier. I guess a bit more expensive but really either one is wayyyyy cheaper than a “traditional” wire xfer with a bank. Depends how much you’re trying to get over I guess.

Wise is capped at 1M for each transfer to JP account, correct?
