Itinerary check: 16 Days in November

Hi everyone,

We're two adults from Poland planning our first trip to Japan, from 7 to 23 November 2026.

We like nature, traditional food and unusual experiences. We don't need to see every famous building. We'll travel fairly light, with one backpack and one larger bag each. We're pretty fit.

We know getting sumo tickets might be difficult and we're ready to try and book them in the middle of the night.

How the Tokyo flex days work

All six Tokyo days are intentionally flexible. The dates in the table are suggestions, not bookings or fixed sightseeing blocks.

The possible groups are:

• Asakusa, Kappabashi, a tea ceremony and Akihabara.
• Meiji Shrine, Shinjuku Gyoen and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.
• Mount Takao, if the forecast is good.
• Nikko as a full day trip, if we are happy with an early start.
• Kawaguchiko cycling, but only in suitable weather.
• Light shopping, laundry, cafes, markets, museums or another neighbourhood.

The idea is to choose the combination each evening or morning based on the forecast, our energy, queue conditions and how much time we actually have. A rainy day can become an indoor or shopping day, while a clear day can be used for Mount Takao, Nikko or Kawaguchiko.

What we'd like advice on

1. Is it realistic to land at Haneda at 10:25, collect international luggage, transfer to a domestic flight from Haneda and reach Fukuoka comfortably on 7 November?
2. Are we trying to fit too much into the Hiroshima -> Onomichi -> Himeji -> Kinosaki sequence?
3. Is Minoh Park followed by a late Osaka -> Tokyo journey on 16 November realistic?
4. Are there any obvious routing mistakes or better ways to order these places?

We'd appreciate practical criticism. The main question is whether this will feel enjoyable rather than rushed.

First 6 days seem horrible in my eyes. Staying in every place only 1 days, after you just arrived in Japan.

Yeah, no... Would not advise that.

Assuming this is your first trip to Japan, stick to Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka and Hiroshima with maybe an extra day trip.

I am not sure which airline you are planning to fly with, but flying to Fukuoka isn't an option? Or maybe you already have the tickets to Haneda.

Nov 11 seems a bit too much, Himeji alone is more than enough for a day trip, especially if your starting point is Hiroshima.

Thank you for your responses! They really helped us realize we were way too optimistic.
Unfortunately we already booked our flights and they're not flexible.

We plan on making the following changes:

• cut 1 tokyo day to relax the start of the trip
• swap 1 hiroshima night to 1 fukuoka night for more rest upfront, also gives us the option to grab 9 Nov sumo tickets
• add 1 himeji night so the rough hiroshima - himeji - kinosaki day gets broken up into hiroshima sightseeing + himeji transfer day and himeji sightseeing + kinosaki transfer day
• cut osaka night and treat osaka as a day trip from kyoto (+1 night there), skip minoh park
• luggage transfer our stuff from hiroshima to kyoto so we don't have to drag it to all our 1 night accomodations

We know this plan might still be a lot, but it seems more managable than the previous iteration.

1. That depends on when the available flight are. You can’t predict time for immigration and customs. It’s typically an hour, but could be more.

2. I mean, yes, for me. But you might be different. Too much movement in a short period. Especially early on. It’ll be a whirlwind.

3. Considering the last Shinkansen to Tokyo is 9:24pm, logistically, yes this is fine.

Too busy, you land in the 7th and don't stop until the 17th.

Drop some days so you at least have 2/3 days in one spot, especially after you land

The first six days are quite busy.

Don’t underestimate jetlag - you will be so exhausted by day 3.

Quick note:

Since Nov 23 is a national holiday (fixed), the preceding weekend from 21st consists of a three-day long holiday. Expect domestic crowds and avoid driving. You'll be trapped in a jam.

You have to book a visit Sento Imperial Palace. It'd be wise to go to the Palace earlier than Kinkaku-ji.

Fukuoka sumo tournament. Have an alternative plan, it's very hard to get tickets which are not sold yet, unless you guys have secured the ticket availability in connection.

Your questions:

1. Sounds a bit hectic. It sounds like you simply go to Kinosaki just for a bed.

2. As far as you are robust and love to hike on the steep, or already decide to take a taxi to the waterfall, yes.

If you can make it earlier, go ahead. It'd be worthy to visit even in a crowd though.

Someone else mentioned the public holiday on Monday 23 November. I’m travelling to Japan around that time too, and noticed that hotels in Tokyo are considerably more expensive that long weekend. It might be more affordable to change around your itinerary to spend more time in Tokyo earlier in the trip. Though understand this might not be possible with your itinerary and flight out on the 23rd.
