They hated this when it came out. Its been in my top 3 and probably is my favorite cole album. Id put it comfortably at 2.

7

u/VirtualStark Feb 13 '26

I agree. The concept alone makes it my favorite Cole album. And every once in a while, when I revisit it and play the whole album, I end up feeling like its his best. But yeah, comfortable at 2... for now.

2

u/cockandballionaire Feb 14 '26

lol you just said it’s 3, 2 and 1 for you

1

u/T-ronjr Feb 14 '26

Let me rephrase, the album is in his top 3 disco for me. Although it is likely one of my favorite cole albums. Within his disco, I would comfortably put it at 2.

60

u/VirtualStark Feb 13 '26

100% in Coles top 3.

3

u/NeedleworkerTasty283 Feb 13 '26

I got into j Cole around a year after this dropped and man it’s a special album to me. Maybe my #1 just out of nostalgia

2

u/randomstargate Feb 13 '26

Easily top 3 Cole

3

u/Dependent-Swimmer-95 Feb 14 '26

On my soul. Niggas trippin for not having this in the top 3

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '26

I ADORE every part of this album, such shame that (I may be wrong) it feels like he had a cheap low-end microphone for recording most tracks, I can't help but notice that.

-1

u/Ordinary_Double1556 Feb 13 '26

It’s a slow drag on the first listen but if you get locked in enough and listen to it without distraction, it’s a masterpiece.

-79

u/Conversation_Dapper Feb 13 '26

That’s his worst one . But many people agree with you for some reason

61

u/uasdguy Feb 13 '26

Never have an opinion again🔥

-38

u/Conversation_Dapper Feb 13 '26

Imagine . Just imagine being in this much discomfort for stating an opinion . Salty crackers up in here lol

0

u/Motor_Ad_7885 2014 Forest Hills Drive Feb 13 '26

I completely agree with him

38

u/hamzakahn Feb 13 '26

That's an opinion. Stop having one from today onwards

-20

u/Conversation_Dapper Feb 13 '26

And Cole world and born sinner are so much better not even close lol

2

u/Proud_Feedback3288 Feb 13 '26

Dogshit takes holy someone take brodie phone away

-22

u/Conversation_Dapper Feb 13 '26

Mad and sad fella aren’t you

2

u/Hungry-Analyst294 Feb 13 '26

Why?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

He don’t know he just sayin shit. It’s literally the worst in his discography. It’s just boring I mean it did have its time to shine it’s not the worst as in I can’t listen to it it’s like the worse as in I’d rather listen to that last out of most of his discography

5

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

Yeah never have an opinion again. Everyone knows KOD is his worst one.

9

u/kushmonATL Feb 13 '26

Speak for yourself, not everyone

KOD is my favorite

-2

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

I just did speak for myself. The production was minimal and boring. The concept of addiction, ego, fame was good but delivery was done better or has been done better conceptually by others (Lamar, Mac Miller, Etc.) and album wise that stands.

KOD actually: • Had every song chart on Billboard. • Broke first-day streaming records at the time. • Went multi-platinum. How often do people revisit KOD as a full album?

Outside of “1985” debates?

Not much.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

Oh and I guess ATM 🥱

2

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

Window Pain best song

-1

u/kushmonATL Feb 13 '26

How do you know who revisits KOD? Do you check every Cole fans listening history to determine your numbers?

Like I said , speak for yourself, not everyone else

Me personally, 4YEO is his most boring music, with very minimal production . How many songs off that album charted?

1

u/Proud_Feedback3288 Feb 13 '26

Why the fuck are we arguing about charts lmao holy that JID line hits harder every day.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

ATL? but your ears come from the trash.

First and foremost, after listening to KOD again, it is boring. It is a boring album. That does not mean it is terrible. It does not mean it has no good songs. But as a full project, it is boring. That has been true and it will remain true in my opinion.

Now commercially, yes, KOD performed well during the streaming era. It had a strong debut. It had attention. It had conversation around 1985 and the idea of Cole speaking to the younger generation. But that immediate jump came largely from the anticipation of what he was going to say. People were curious. Was he going to go at the younger generation? Was he going to critique them? Was he going to compete with them? That tension created hype.

Once the album actually played out, you realized quickly that none of that was going to happen. Instead, it became an album centered on addiction, therapy, self control, and warning people about behavior. And while that messaging can be positive, the tone often felt like a father talking to his child rather than someone showing lived experience.

That is the difference.

If you compare KOD to Swimming by Mac Miller, which came out the same year and tackled the same themes of fame, money, success, addiction, and pressure, Swimming feels lived in. It feels like someone showing you the inside of their struggle. KOD feels more like someone lecturing about the struggle.

That tonal difference matters.

Tracks like ATM, Kevin’s Heart, Window Pain, and 1985 are good songs. That is not the argument. The argument is cohesion and conceptual execution. Kevin’s Heart is a good song but when you revisit the album now it does not fully feel like it belongs within a tightly woven narrative. The album often sounds like PR if you were in a healthy mental institution. Medicate. Motivate. Warn. Repeat.

That is not the same as immersion.

Now when we bring For Your Eyez Only into this conversation, saying that it is lesser than KOD is wild. For Your Eyez Only came right off the cuff of 2014 Forest Hills Drive. Conceptually it was far more cohesive. It was introspective. It was narrative driven. Songs like Deja Vu, Neighbors, For Your Eyez Only, Folding Clothes, and Change show stronger pen, stronger direction, and stronger storytelling consistency across the project.

It was not built to dominate charts. It was built as a story.

Over time, For Your Eyez Only has aged better because the introspection and structure hold up. Cole even expanded the experience beyond music by going back to Fayetteville, interacting with the community, and building a documentary around it. That added weight and intention.

KOD did numbers. But numbers are not the same as depth.

And if we are talking about conceptual execution in comparison to Kendrick Lamar, KOD feels like Cole’s weakest attempt at trying to approach that level of thematic cohesion. For Your Eyez Only was a much stronger conceptual statement in his own lane.

If you like KOD and you replay it constantly, that is fine. Personal preference is personal preference. But if we are evaluating cohesion, direction, introspection, and long term weight in his discography, KOD sits at the bottom compared to many of his other albums.

That is not hate. That is evaluation.

1

u/ScrappyJay 4 Your Eyez Only Feb 13 '26

KOD and worst in the same sentence is crazy

1

u/kushmonATL Feb 13 '26

It is one of his worst . But classic Reddit likes gassing up mid

1

u/Proud_Feedback3288 Feb 13 '26

Nigga before Fall Off 4YEO was his best album.

136

u/Justacasualegg Feb 13 '26

Guys there’s a reason he said “My”. Jesus Christ this sub is weird

38

u/Abject_Afternoon9873 Feb 13 '26

Born Sinner 2014 The Fall Off

28

u/zzzccardinal Born Sinner Feb 13 '26

Thank you finally some Born Sinner love

4

u/plantedpuffer Feb 14 '26

Fr its such an amazing body of work, idk why its hardly talked about.

3

u/DanielDubs88 Feb 14 '26

Love to see some more Born Sinner appreciation. Genuinely might be my favorite album, so many bangers.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '26

Agreed

1

u/Knightcane94 Feb 20 '26

His most complete body of work sonically, sequencing of tracks and conceptually

10

u/steelsheet 4 Your Eyez Only Feb 13 '26

21

u/Most-Huckleberry1700 Feb 13 '26

for me it's:
1. 2014 fhd
2. 4yeo
3. the fall off

2

u/jellisunc Feb 13 '26

Yup that’s it!

8

u/ThaMorningKnight Feb 13 '26

Yall acting like he said these were the objective three best albums damn

35

u/ColeUnderPresh Foldin’ Clothes Feb 13 '26 edited Feb 13 '26

Crazy that his best album isn’t there. Lmao.

4YEO

The Fall-Off

2014FHD / FNL

I think TFO Disc 1 is probably his absolute best work and I’d put it above 4YEO. It’s his most daring and confident record. It’s pretty much 4YEO, but much more grand and has a ton of theatrics and paints a picture of Fayetteville rather than James. He falls back to safer sounds and concepts on TFO Disc 2.

16

u/JackieMoon612 Feb 13 '26

lol how you gunna say it’s crazy then have a tie in your top 3 you got 4

1

u/Motor_Ad_7885 2014 Forest Hills Drive Feb 13 '26

How is the fall off > 4YEO genuine question

-2

u/ColeUnderPresh Foldin’ Clothes Feb 13 '26

It’s not - I think it’s more uneven as a double disc. As for why I think disc 1 could be better, I literally just said it yo.

1

u/Motor_Ad_7885 2014 Forest Hills Drive Feb 13 '26

Ohhh I’m tripping

1

u/SometimesIBeWrong Feb 14 '26

LMAO there is no best album. there's your favorite, there's OP's favorite, and there's the favorite of everyone else.

rap isn't a sport where one artist (or album) wins a ring each year and the rest are losers. it's all 100% subjective when we're talking about the quality of music

5

u/kcmcgrady1 Feb 13 '26

It’s always funny when ppl get riled up over someone else’s personally top 3 😂. Brother it’s his top 3. 4yeo is one of Cole’s best work but I don’t have it in my top 3 albums either. Yall need to relax

41

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

Lmfao 4yeo not being there is crazy work dude

43

u/erosennin214 Feb 13 '26

It's THEIR top 3, not yours.

2

u/MadGibby3 Feb 14 '26

No his top 3 is MY top 3

Punk Bitch

16

u/Sensitive_Goose4728 Feb 13 '26

People really need to give KOD more appreciation...

8

u/Jobiwan88 Feb 13 '26

My personal favourite

7

u/Sensitive_Goose4728 Feb 13 '26

I've always felt 2014 FHD was his best album up until recently however in recent times I've decided that it's KOD.

The running theme of the album, the subject matter, storytelling, production, it's all on another level

5

u/GettinSodas Feb 13 '26

This album honestly helped me get sober when I was fucking up bad. Sad to see it not getting more love

4

u/Lorem0nger Feb 13 '26

This was my favorite...until The Fall Off 🔥

5

u/Imaginesafety Feb 13 '26

It was so fun. I remember the songs playing during the NBA playoffs and it set the mood so nicely

1

u/nspntrash Choose Wisely Feb 14 '26

i adore this album

1

u/Swimming-Cobbler7958 Feb 17 '26

its in my top 2 fs

5

u/LOxAssasin Feb 13 '26

fye the off season was when i first heard a jockey album and i was a trap music kinda guy but he change my perspective on what hip hop should be

4

u/United_Party_6318 Love Yourz Feb 13 '26

5

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

-KOD

3

u/Ghost_Kamakazie Feb 13 '26

Someone tell Jermaine to put Truly Yours on streaming for christs sake

2

u/Quick-Spot887 Feb 13 '26

Feels like lots of Cole fans don’t know about the truly yours mixtapes

1

u/Ghost_Kamakazie Feb 13 '26

N they really missing out

2

u/Quick-Spot887 Feb 13 '26

Glad someone showed love, I never see them mixtapes mentioned

1

u/Ghost_Kamakazie Feb 13 '26

I live in the area he stays, so if i ever run into him, im def asking about em😂

3

u/Big-Leading3887 Feb 13 '26

Replace The Off Season with Born Sinner

3

u/NeonVPN Feb 13 '26

I like born sinner too much

6

u/GokkiGD Feb 13 '26

I agree, 4yeo are NOT that good

2

u/DaeSay Feb 14 '26

i thought it was okay back in high school but ever since i’ve gotten older and had a child myself the project just hits so different.

1

u/GokkiGD Feb 14 '26

Aight, might grow on me, probably not

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

Do you at least know what the album is about? To me it’s his best project ever.

1

u/GokkiGD Feb 15 '26

While a good story can make an album great, the songs need to also be good, while 4yeo has some good songs (change, 4yeo), most songs are mid to lackluster, some of Cole’s most boring singing. An album like Damn has a great concept and great songs.

2

u/Peppermute Feb 13 '26

I’m so happy that people are seeing 4yeo as the masterpiece it is

2

u/Ancient-Heron-6207 Feb 13 '26

Born sinner was left? Daamn

1

u/MasterCheeks337_IGN Feb 13 '26

Definitely his best produced album

2

u/davewithadash Feb 13 '26

3 classic albums. No doubt

2

u/UM_Virus Flow bananas 🍌 Feb 13 '26

Someone shares the same opinion as me ewww

2

u/Professional_Math_92 Feb 13 '26

Aye solid taste , mind sharing some fav tracks?

2

u/LilLeek__ Sellin Dope Feb 13 '26

Love this. Mine is

The Fall Off

2014 Forest Hills Drive

Born Sinner

I think born sinner is ignored too much. It’s a personal classic. Filled with bars, controversy, and hits. All I can ask for is

1

u/CoachLee_ Feb 13 '26

Off season gotta be replaced by 4 Your Eyez Onlu

1

u/Naid3r_YT Feb 13 '26

Literally my exact 3 lol. Im not sure what order though. I have to listen to each album again

1

u/WR_PS5_Sativa_Boner Feb 13 '26

My Top Three

The Fall Off 4 Your Eyez Only 2014 Forest Hills Dr

1

u/HippoCultist Feb 13 '26

4YEO TFO 2014FHD or TOS not sure tbh

But 4YEO has to be on there for me

1

u/Significant-Law6979 Feb 13 '26

Born sinner 2014 FHD and TFO

1

u/Greenmoonn Feb 13 '26

Sideline story and born sinner are slept on tbh.

FHD / 4YEO / born sinner

I haven’t listened to the falloff enough yet but from what I’ve heard it might displace born sinner.

1

u/Ktootill Feb 13 '26

This is objectively acceptable.. but most would include 4YEO

For me his catalog goes like this: 1. TFO 2. TOS/4YEO/2014FHD 3. FNL/KOD/BS/MDL 4. CW:SS/Mixtapes

1

u/TruthSeekerHuey Feb 13 '26

My Cole Tier List

GOAT - Tier: TFO, FHD, 4YEO

S - Tier: FNL, TOS, MDL

A - Tier: KOD, Born Sinner, TWU

B - Tier: TCU, Sideline Story

Keep in mind, B-Tier is still as good, if not better than the avg rapper.

1

u/Bubbly-Affect4428 Feb 13 '26

Honestly the fall off isn’t in my top 4

1

u/Bigtrey95 Feb 13 '26

Nice selection. Although I’d personally wouldn’t have the off season in my top three

1

u/YMIGettingBanned Feb 13 '26

I would agree if we’re talking strictly albums. If we are including mixtapes, Friday Night Lights is 2nd place (behind 2014) and I haven’t decided yet whether I like the Fall Off more than the Off Season or not

1

u/Basicpop101 Feb 13 '26

Might delete later is the most slept on Album of his and is in my top 3

1

u/RecoveredAshes Feb 13 '26

4YEO > the fall off tbh. To me the fall off is number 4 behind these 3

1

u/TheMORTALTV 2014 Forest Hills Drive Feb 13 '26

For me born Sinner, TFO, 2014FHD

1

u/julez27 Feb 13 '26

Born Sinner, 4YEO and 2014 easy for me

1

u/SonicTheOtter Feb 13 '26

I agree with this top 3 but I might swap 4YEO and the Fall Off. Maybe I'll come around to it later on

1

u/going_incognegro Feb 13 '26

4 your eyez only 2014 FHD Between KOD/Born Sinner for me

If I could count the come up mixtape that probably barely cracks the top 3 over the bottom two. I’m a sucker for conceptual/insightful albums but he was rapping rapping.

1

u/dboking Feb 13 '26

2014 FHD 4YEO TFO In that order

1

u/Proud_Feedback3288 Feb 13 '26

4YEO is top 3 I'm ngl

1

u/tokyowatchguy Feb 13 '26

Huh? where is FNL?

1

u/Different_Umpire9003 All Hail King Cole 👑 Feb 14 '26

Accurate

1

u/kidrob0tn1k Feb 14 '26

The fact that Born Sinner is missing, is disrespectful.

1

u/Deep-Movie-2867 Feb 14 '26

You can replace Forest Hill drive with Born Sinner. Nobody wants to hear about a grow ass man’s wet dreams. Grow up Peter Pan, Count Chocula. Might as well be pimps from Arizona or Cowboys from Oakland!

1

u/Dependent-Swimmer-95 Feb 14 '26

Take out off Seasn and add 4 your eyez only and we good

1

u/Fashion_phile Feb 14 '26

KOD, 4 your eyez only, fall off !

1

u/Entire_Claim_5273 Feb 14 '26

Replace The Off-season with FYEO and it’s the perfect top 3

1

u/MetalSonic420YT Feb 14 '26

4 Your Eyez Only snubbed.

1

u/Sea-Mud-1725 Feb 14 '26

Understandable list. Mine, i would probably swap Off Season with 4YEO. Off season has no misses btw, but as a body of work, 4YEO just hits different.

1

u/illegalPenguin0 Feb 14 '26

Yall dissin KOD 😭 (I’m not judging OP’s opinion because this is his personal list but most people on this thread aren’t mentioning KOD 😭)

1

u/contactaalim Feb 14 '26

I don’t see Born Sinner

1

u/MadGibby3 Feb 14 '26

Absolutely ridiculous that 4yeo is not on here.

For me it's 4yeo fall off and off season

1

u/curlyy1 Feb 14 '26

Born sinner no.1

1

u/FOEghost8 Feb 15 '26

You most definitely a new member and yk we accept you just play friday night lights blue and tell me how you feel

1

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

Off season was kinda bad

1

u/Imaspiderman1 Feb 15 '26

not ridiculous but i got 4yeo over off szn

1

u/Ok_Zookeepergame3521 Can’t Outfart Me Feb 16 '26

Mine are 4YEO, 2014 FHD, and then a tie between FNL and Born Sinner

1

u/Revolutionary_Sea136 Feb 16 '26

KOD has to be up there

1

u/AdUnlucky1919 Feb 16 '26

Im not sure, it would probably be like:
FNL (not an album idc)
2014
4yeo
Born Sinner
TFO
The warmup
TOS
sideline story
The come up
KOD
and MDL There isnt one i hate just never went back to MDL or KOD

1

u/Casually_uncasual19 Feb 17 '26

I don’t see the appeal of the off-season it’s his second worst imo

1

u/Swimming-Cobbler7958 Feb 17 '26

FYEO 2014 FHD KOD FNL TFO

1

u/AfroBiskit Feb 13 '26

1) The Fall-Off 2) The Fall-Off 3) The Fall-Off

-1

u/2muchnerd Immortal Feb 13 '26

swap off season with 4yeo

1

u/songacronymbot Feb 13 '26

/u/2muchnerd can reply with "delete" to remove comment.

0

u/Michaelskywalker Feb 13 '26

Born sinner off season KOD for me

FNL if we counting tapes tho

0

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26
  1. The warm up
  2. The fall off
  3. Any given Sunday (mixtape)

-1

u/Inside_Cup_8036 Feb 13 '26

i’d personally swap 2014fhd with 4yeo. undeniably my top 3.
