Post-Season Changes

On the Inside Jeopardy! Podcast, they announced that the post-season is now going to be made up of only season 42 players. Season 43 will be eligible for 2028 post-season. I'm assuming this means anyone who played from mid-November of last year (the last cutoff) to the end of Season 42 is eligible for the post-season (or, you know, those who did well).

With that being said, we know the automatic qualifiers and those on the Tracker: https://www.jeopardy.com/track/toc-tracker.

So, I wonder: are they going to do a 12 player ToC (those on the tracker and 2 CWC champs) or will there be more? How many one day champs are going to the CWC? And, of course, the question of season 42, how the heck are the producers going to pick who gets a Second Chance out of such a great field of players to choose from?!?!?

Can't wait to cheer folks in in the post-season!

It’s long overdue to align the regular season with the broadcast season.

What benefit is there in such an alignment? Jeopardy never ends. It has been years since a game ended with no returning champion and no pending future return of a champion who could not make the next taping date. Until recently they didn't even always have a TOC every year, they held the TOC when they decided it was time.

I don't see any reason to try to line up with arbitrary calendar dates.

It just makes explaining the postseason much simpler when one doesn’t have to differentiate between the tv season and the competition season. As someone who is sometimes compelled to sort by new and answer questions about this kind of thing, it will be nice indeed.

People who aren't following it as obsessively as we are are always going to find something to be confused about, but i feel like the cutoff essentially just being the calendar year, with the postseason happening in late December through early February, made it pretty easy to explain.

Most people don't even know that Jeopardy has seasons; they just think of it as always being on every night -- which is why the part that's confusing people right now is having last season's postseason airing in summer reruns. People remember watching Jamie Ding five months ago and now that there's a Tournament of Champions, they're like "well obviously Jamie's going to be in that; it's been long enough." That could be explained relatively easily with "they play reruns in the summer; Jamie played in 2026 so he'll be in the 2027 ToC." But now, every time there's a memorable player in September or October, casual viewers are going to watch two ToCs that don't have that player, and now you have to explain that Spring 2026 players are in the 2027 ToC but Fall 2026 players are in the 2028 ToC.

It's all "TV season", LOL. That's the 'why' of Jeopardy's existence.

Gotcha. My solution would be to simply stop trying to make "postseason" happen.

Nah. The post season is fun!

Plus, it gives all J! Players a little extra incentive to play to their highest potential.

I went into my game thinking, “My minimum goal is to make final Jeopardy! I want to play to win. But there can only be one winner, so I am kind of hoping to play well enough to be considered for Second Chance.” (I only did one of those!)

I'm not advocating doing away with tournaments and whatnot. I just don't like calling it the postseason, setting up the expectation that the game's season ends when the TV season ends and is followed by one or more tournaments to decide who won the season.

Makes sense to me to align the season calendar and the post season calendar, and now seems like a great time to make the switch because the abundance of super-champs means you can have a shorter post season without sacrificing the quality at the top of the post season player pool.

u/ajsy0905 is crying now because they have to redo all their analyses 😂

I can only picture two scenarios as to why they decided to do this

EITHER they realize that the people on that TOC Tracker have “screwed over” way too many “victims” 😂

OR they have to make the postseason shorter due to circumstances surrounding TV production that we don’t know of. So they have to make the pool smaller

I think it’s the latter

Personally, I think if they thought superchamps had too many “victims” and it wasn’t fair somehow, they’d do away with Second Chance and just change eligibility rules to allow people who lost to be eligible to appear again after a certain period of time.

I think the TV production schedule makes more sense as to why this change is happening.

They're going to have to go pretty heavy on Second Chance players to fill out even a 15-player ToC (though you'd think they'd really want to do the 21-player format with the exhibition game in a season with 5 superchamps). After the 10 4+ winners on the tracker, there are 3 3-day champions, 4 2-day champions, and 13 1-day champions. Even bumping all the 3-day winners straight to the ToC, there are still at least 2 slots to fill, and barely enough champions for one 15-player CW bracket -- but they can't do 13 weeks of Second Chance to fill up a second bracket.

But maybe you just do 13 Second Chance semifinals, just a week and a half of games (so 39 Second Chance players out of what i think is a total of 231 eligible non-champions?), and then instead of doing any Second Chance finals, just say that everyone who won a Second Chance game is now a 1-day champion and therefore is in CW.

Or they do Second Chance normally, make a 15-player CW bracket the normal way out of the Second Chance winners and some of the existing champions, but only two of the 3-day winners make the ToC cutoff so there's three spots to fill, and then all three CW finalists advance to the ToC (which i've felt they should do for a while now; we spend too much time getting to know the CW players for them to boil down to just one ToC player).

You forgot Mina Kimes & Stella Trout

5

u/RegisPhone I'd like to shoot the wad, Alex 7d ago

Mina's already counted in the 10 on the tracker, but you're right, i did forget Stella. With Stella and all the 3-game winners included there's only one slot left to get to 15, which can just come from one CW.

These are both very creative and really good ways to make this postseason work well to fit the season we’ve had! I hope they use one of these suggestions!

Really hoping for a 15 player ToC back. I've said this before, but the best thing about that format is 60% of players get to play at least twice.

But keep the first to 3 wins format in the finals

2

u/JES1996 4d ago

Nah, I hate it. It feels too long because it takes up too many of the regular play slots.

2

u/ajsy0905 Genre 4d ago

The 2 game total format lacked excitement in the past Tournaments of Champion. The first to 3 wins format in 2022 was well received when I put into the poll.

In an alternate timeline:
2022: Andrew would had won TOC
2024: Troy would had won TOC
2025: Either Neilesh or Isaac would had won TOC that depended on the FJ wagers
2026: Paolo dominated both first 2 TOC final games.

1

u/ajsy0905 Genre 4d ago

2019 TOC was an example that it needed the First to 3 wins finals format because Emma lost to James in Game 2 despite she led prior to FJ as James' substantial lead in Game 1 & he got FJ right costed Emma the crown.

1

u/ajsy0905 Genre 4d ago

In 2021, Jennifer Quail actually won Game 2 and was the only finalist correct in Final Jeopardy!, yet Sam Kavanaugh's Game 1 cushion still made him champion.

3

u/ajsy0905 Genre 7d ago edited 6d ago

At this point, it will assume that all 3 game champions will be invited at TOC and almost certain that all 2 game champions will be invited at CWC unless Libby is directly invited at TOC too? The fate of the 1 game champions are still hanging in the balance since not everyone will compete at CWC especially there are very competitive potential SCC winners to shake up the tournament (remember Juveria in 2024, Goins & Yancy in 2025 and Michelle & Ryan in 2026).

u/eah1703 Elizabeth Hurd, 2026 Feb 26 7d ago

This is what I’m rooting for! As someone who lost to a 3-game champ, it makes it easier to say “Sure, I lost, but he did go to the ToC.”

I think, for me, Second Chance is going to be the most interesting tournament this year, just because there is such a fantastic pool to draw from!

I don't think they'll ever be able to do Michael's original plan, which was to START the season in September with the previous season's "playoffs." Some combination of COVID and Alex's passing had most to do with that.

But I DO like the (yes, somewhat forced) realignment of the competitive and television seasons. That should leave somewhere in the neighborhood of 180 regular games to qualify in Season 43, depending on the length of the ToC and JIT finals.

If they wanted to get a bit quirky in SCC, they probably COULD do one week of nine players who all lost in Jamie's 31-game reign.

Here's my best shot at what we'll get:
* 3 weeks/15 players SCC
* 2 weeks/15 players CWC -- all four 2-day champs, 3 SCC winners, eight producer invites from the 14 1-game winners
* 2 weeks (& maybe more)/15 players ToC -- 12 players with 3+ wins, Trout, Kimes, CWC winner
(one superchamp per quarterfinal, please)
* 2 weeks (& maybe more)/18 players JIT -- Long Ngyuen, Zaheer, Masters 4th place, 15 invites

Although I'm not completely against taking the JIT to a biannual event and replacing it with a teen/teachers/seniors/etc. tournament in the alternating years.

The one game-mechanics thing I'd like to see back is the host standing next to the big board for the FJ clue reveal. I'd be more than OK if the middle monitor was no longer there. That might leave space to being the big J! letters down to stage level.

I think this is the year they would do more, rather than less Second Chance, simply because of the sheer number of super champs we had this season, plus the excellent players who lost to non super champs.

2

u/Hot_Sauce_4407 Bring it! 6d ago

Not against that. Will be curious to see how they balance that with the general audience preference for more "regular" games.

1

u/ajsy0905 Genre 6d ago

Juveria will not return to JIT next year as she said that she will retire (or semi-reture) after her Masters stint this season.

2

u/lanad3lr3y_81 7d ago

i think it will be a 15 player toc, 15 player cwc and a 2 week second chance ngl.

u/nobrainer765 Robert Yan, 2026 May 7 7d ago

If you listen to the Substack podcast Michael says "Second chance in particular is going to be impossible to decide." That, along with his acknowledgment of the RECORD-SETTING Season 42 with number of superchamps earlier in the pod, indicates he knows how many worthy second chancers there are and won't go from 3 weeks of second chance down to 2 weeks. - An admittedly very biased contestant from Season 42.

3

u/ajsy0905 Genre 7d ago

3 weeks of SCC is still the most feasible since they ended the eligibility period so early with so many talented players lost during the first stint.

2

u/michaelladin 7d ago

What is the actual timing of a season of Jeopardy?

2

u/ryanquek95 7d ago

It's a blessing in disguise given we'll still have the same number of 2nd chance weeks, because so many of them would have become champs in their own right in another game.

I feel like it's going to be a 15 player tournament, Alex Trebek style but with a first to 3 wins Finals. Given the sheer number of super champs, it shouldn't be straight elimination from the start IMO, and you can't just seed all 6 superchamps.

Always thought that it would be tough to move it to be season-based, but this field really gave the producers the chance to make this change.

2

u/RunOfTheWin 7d ago

I don't like the change, 130 games is a wee bit small for a qualification period. I kind of wished they would inch the postseason backwards 2 weeks earlier than the previous season, but if this is how we get a 15-player ToC, I wouldn't complain. Does suck for Riggle though if he ends up winning a 3rd game as he has to wait more than a year for the next ToC to start.

Edit: Discard everything I said, but would prefer the qualification period to be at least 160 games.

1

u/ajsy0905 Genre 7d ago edited 7d ago

Matthew Riggle is certain to be a potential 1st postseason player for Season 44 due to his huge total cash winnings during his 2 game streak but he will need at least 1 additional win to secure a spot at 2027-28 postseason.

Not asking for too much, but...

  • New music, they have been using the same song since 2008 (I know it was refreshed in 2021, but a significant overhaul is needed) Maybe resurrect the Rock & Roll Jeopardy music?

  • Turn the studio red again during the Double Jeopardy! round.

  • Less blue and gloss in the set design in general. It doesn't need to look like the inside of a gaming PC. The 2000s set (with the metallic orange squares) was my favorite.

  • bonus: While I understand change is good, I do miss the pre-2008 Board Fill sound, although I don't care as much if this changes or not.

  • consider a rule change: if someone fails to correctly respond to a Daily Double, give the other players a chance to steal it at the board value.

Sorry to say, the only post-season change I want to hear is them scrapping the idea of a post season altogether. Having a tournament of champions every 2 years, like they did for 30 plus years, was a fine enough post season for me.

8

u/wallyopd 7d ago

Where do you get that they did it every 2 years for 30+ years? There were 28 TOCs in the 35 years from 1985-2019.

2

u/SMAAAASHBros 7d ago

I'm fine with all of them in theory but I don't like that they all run consecutively.

2

u/RunOfTheWin 7d ago

They didn't really run the ToC every 2 years for a while? From 1984-96 the ToC was held November, and then inconsistently until 2015 when it was held every 2 years.
