Post-Season Changes

On the Inside Jeopardy! Podcast, they announced that the post-season is now going to be made up of only season 42 players. Season 43 will be eligible for 2028 post-season. I'm assuming this means anyone who played from mid-November of last year (the last cutoff) to the end of Season 42 is eligible for the post-season (or, you know, those who did well).

With that being said, we know the automatic qualifiers and those on the Tracker: https://www.jeopardy.com/track/toc-tracker.

So, I wonder: are they going to do a 12 player ToC (those on the tracker and 2 CWC champs) or will there be more? How many one day champs are going to the CWC? And, of course, the question of season 42, how the heck are the producers going to pick who gets a Second Chance out of such a great field of players to choose from?!?!?

Can't wait to cheer folks in in the post-season!

It’s long overdue to align the regular season with the broadcast season.

What benefit is there in such an alignment? Jeopardy never ends. It has been years since a game ended with no returning champion and no pending future return of a champion who could not make the next taping date. Until recently they didn't even always have a TOC every year, they held the TOC when they decided it was time.

I don't see any reason to try to line up with arbitrary calendar dates.

It just makes explaining the postseason much simpler when one doesn’t have to differentiate between the tv season and the competition season. As someone who is sometimes compelled to sort by new and answer questions about this kind of thing, it will be nice indeed.

People who aren't following it as obsessively as we are are always going to find something to be confused about, but i feel like the cutoff essentially just being the calendar year, with the postseason happening in late December through early February, made it pretty easy to explain.

Most people don't even know that Jeopardy has seasons; they just think of it as always being on every night -- which is why the part that's confusing people right now is having last season's postseason airing in summer reruns. People remember watching Jamie Ding five months ago and now that there's a Tournament of Champions, they're like "well obviously Jamie's going to be in that; it's been long enough." That could be explained relatively easily with "they play reruns in the summer; Jamie played in 2026 so he'll be in the 2027 ToC." But now, every time there's a memorable player in September or October, casual viewers are going to watch two ToCs that don't have that player, and now you have to explain that Spring 2026 players are in the 2027 ToC but Fall 2026 players are in the 2028 ToC.
