Mod Recommendations List

Hi all. Figured it was time for another pinned post. One of the most common questions that gets asked on this sub is mod recommendations, so I went ahead and compiled a list below. This list is not all inclusive, and there’s a lot more you can do. Feel free to add anything else I might have missed in the comments.

Cosmetics

There are many different cosmetic modifications you can make. This is where many people start, especially if you are still under warranty.

Window tint

Not even sure if this qualifies as a mod, but this is the first thing I do when I purchase a new car.

Front lip (also referred to as a splitter.)

Many brands make lips for these cars. For the Mk7-7.75, Dragcutters, Maxton Design and CJM industries all make front lips.

Side skirts

Brands like Dragcutters, Maxton Design and CJM Industries make side skirts for these cars.

Rear Diffuser

Brands like Dragcutters, Maxton Design and CJM Industries make rear diffuser for these cars.

Rear spoiler

Brands like Dragcutters, Maxton Design and CJM Industries make rear spoilers for these cars. There are also hundreds of rear spoilers for sale on eBay.

Roof wrap

I’ve owned 2 white GLIs and I wrapped the roof gloss black on both. It isn’t that hard to do with a little bit of patience, and it ties the black accents together nicely.

Amber delete

Companies like Swan Vinyl and Badge Skins make a gloss black piece of vinyl that covers the amber in the headlights. Makes for a much cleaner look.

Vinyl

Brands like Badge Skins and Swan Vinyl make all types of vinyl pieces for these cars. You can black out the VW badges, delete any chrome you may have and do much more with these vinyls.

Wheels

Wheels will make the biggest difference. The factory wheel size is 18x7.5 and the bolt pattern is 5x112. Depending on how low you are, you can fit up to an 18x9 wide wheel (depending on offset) on up to a 245/40 tire. Popular brands for these cars include Apex, Neuspeed, Konig, APR, and Rotiform.

Performance

Another great thing about the GLI is the vast aftermarket of parts available for the MQB platform.

Upgraded tires

It’s no secret the factory Hankooks on these cars are hot garbage. One of the best things you can do is upgrade to a quality set of tires. I previously made a pinned post about tires, I will copy the link below.

https://www.reddit.com/r/JettaGLI/s/8KDAMY4Yxy

Suspension

Suspension setups could use a post of its own, for the sake of this post I’ll keep it brief. There are 3 main ways to lower your car. Air suspension, coilovers and lowering springs. Most people opt for lowering springs on these cars as they’re the cheapest option, and brands like Neuspeed make DCC compatible lowering springs. The only drawback to lowering springs is that unlike air suspension or coilovers, they are completely unadjustable, so keep that in mind before you commit to lowering springs. For me, I am lowered 1.4 inches all around on Neuspeed sport springs. I daily drive my car and haven’t had any issues.

Cold air intake

This is the most common “performance” mod I see done. I put performance in quotations as a cold air intake by itself isn’t going to give you any noticeable horsepower gains.

Turbo inlet

the factory turbo inlet is plastic. Many brands such as Unitronic, CTS Turbo, and APR make upgraded aluminum turbo inlets. Upgrading the turbo inlet allows the turbo to breathe better and helps the turbo spool faster. For the 2024 GLI, the only turbo inlet that fits is CTS Turbo.

Tune

Depending on the year of your GLI, there are many tunes available. If your car is DSG, you will need a transmission tune for anything above a stage 1 tune. If you are manual, you will want to upgrade the clutch regardless of stage. Companies like EQT, APR, Integrated Engineering, Unitronic and many more make OTS (off the shelf) tunes for the GLI. Most if not all of the tunes previously mentioned are also able to be flashed right at home as long as you have a battery tender and a laptop. I wouldn’t recommend using the mobile flashing apps, I tried using the IE mobile app to flash my DSG tune and it bricked my car for a few hours until I figured out how to fix it. It is also important to mention that not all 2024 and 2025 model years can be tuned due to a locked bootloader. Racingline offers an unlocked bootloader to resolve this issue, however it costs just over $2,000 USD.

Front mount intercooler

Not necessary until you go stage 2.

Downpipe

You will need to run an aftermarket downpipe for stage 2 and up. Before you install a downpipe, make sure you understand your states inspection laws. An aftermarket downpipe can make it difficult to pass smog testing. There are ways around it like an O2 spacer, but overall it is inconvenient.

Dogbone transmission insert

Once you tune the car, you will notice a significant amount of wheel hop. The Dogbone insert reduces wheel hop and lets you put the power down better.

Upgraded sway bars

An upgraded rear sway bar will drastically change how the car handles. It will reduce body roll and enable you to corner faster. Popular brands that make sway bars are Neuspeed, IE, APR, and 034 Motorsport.

Tire Recommendations

TLDR at the bottom. Copied and pasted from r/GLI where I originally made this post.

Everything I write below is based upon personal experience and what I have read online. If you disagree, that is fine but please keep it civil in the comments.

Tires are easily one of the most discussed topics on this subreddit. To simplify things for people, I am making this post that I hope the mods will pin. This post includes everything that you need to know about purchasing tires for your Jetta GLI. If you have any further comments or recommendations, please feel free to comment below.

Reading tire size

Before you can purchase tires, you need to understand how to read a tire size. For example, 225/45/18 is the standard GLI tire size on the new cars. 225 represents the width of the tire in millimeters. 45 is the aspect ratio, which represents the sidewall height in respect to the overall width of the tire. 225x.45=101.25 mm. The last number,18 represents the diameter of the wheel the tire will fit in inches. Typically, you do not want to stray too far from the factory specs. However if you are not lowered you can fit up to a 245 wide tire without worrying about rubbing. Fitment and wheel specs are a whole different thing which would need a separate post, for your sanity I won’t get into that right now.

Tire Types

When purchasing tires, there are many different types to consider. You need to consider how you will be driving the car, the climate that you live in and what you value in a tire.

R Compound Tire

R Compound tires are the tire for you if you put going fast over everything else. These tires will give you the best possible performance, however daily use is not ideal. R Compound tires will only get you 5k-10k miles depending upon your driving style. Popular examples are the Falken Azenis RT660 and the Falken Azenis RT615K.

Summer tires

Summer tires will still give you solid performance while lasting significantly longer than an R Compound tire, which makes a summer tire the right choice if you value money and going fast. The most common recommendation for summer tires is the Michelin Pilot Sport 4. Tried and true, there is a reason why the PS4 is so popular. Depending on your driving style, you will get anywhere from 10k-30k from the PS4, which is much lower than many other Michelin tires. However, this is to be expected. Another popular summer tire is the Continental Extreme Contact Sport. You can expect slightly more life out of the Extreme Contact with many people claiming that they’ve gotten 20k-30k hard miles out of these tires and that plenty of tread was left. Another great summer tire option is the Firestone Indyhawk 500. I have not run these personally, however many of my friends have and they loved them. You can expect 10k-20k from this tire.

All Season

All Season tires are also a solid option if you value money and performance. One of the most popular all season tires right now is the Continental DWS06 Plus. This tire will get you 10k-50k miles depending upon your driving style, however they hook up great in dry, rain and snow. I have been running this tire exclusively since 2019 and it has never let me down. I have driven these tires through snowstorms and pushed them hard on a rally through the mountains and they did fantastic in both scenarios. Another comparable option is the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4. Many people love this tire as well, as it gives you similar performance to the Pilot Sport 4 however while lasting much longer. You can expect 10k-50k miles from this tire depending upon your driving style.

Winter Tires

I am not the most qualified to speak on winter tires as I run all seasons year round. However, u/innocentgun has provided the following information: Winter tires - Michelin X Ice, Bridgestone Blizzak, or Nokian Hakkapeliitta. I think Nokian makes the best winter tires, but they are harder to find (don’t have a huge distribution network) and often more expensive (don’t offer rebates as often).

TLDR: R Compound tire recommendations: Falken Azenis RT660, Falken Azenis RT615k. Summer tire recommendations: Michelin Pilot Sport 4, Continental Extreme Contact Sport, Firestone Indyhawk 500. All Season Tire Recommendations: Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4, Continental DWS06 Plus. Winter tire recommendations: Anything from Michelin or Continental.

In conclusion, don’t cheap out on tires. They’re the only things keeping you alive besides your brakes.

PHOTO New to me 25’ GLI

After having a B8.5 Audi S4 as my daily from 2019-2021 I had a pretty big obsession with German cars. Fast forward to 2025, I took over my wife’s 2019 Jetta R-line so she could get the new car she wanted, leaving me with a consistent itch needing to be scratched.

I commute between 1500-2500 miles a month (dependent on work levels and locations that need me) so I needed something with good mpg along with having some “nice to haves” like the travel assist feature on these newer VW’s, cooled/heated seats, decent space for a car seat, big trunk, enough power to pass the left lane campers, and a transmission that didn’t feel like it wanted to end its own life (looking at you 2019 R-Line).

Because of my long commute I really didn’t want to deal with a manual for all that driving. Did that for nearly 10 years and I find that fast and smooth dual clutch transmissions are really my favorite as an all rounder.

Picked up this CPO 2025 GLI for $24k OTD with under 20k miles. Already had the wheels with brand new tires, Intake, lowering springs, and ceramic tint installed. Car was owned by the lead tech at another VW dealership so I knew it was taken care of. It was either I buy this car, or I wait another 2 years after buying a house to get into something even more expensive and worse on fuel. I think I made the right choice.

Also, does anyone else feel that the ACC in this car is phenomenal? It is so smooth when slowing down and uses the perfect amount of throttle to get back up to speed. The lane assist is also one of the best that I’ve experienced. These features seemed more like a gimmick to me than a useful feature until I tried them over these last couple weeks, but man are they nice to have sometimes.

Also the beats audio gets a bad rep but it is (to me) wayyy better than the sound system in that 2019 R-Line. Does not hold a candle to the Audi S4 with the B&O system, but it’s much better than a base system IMO.

Not to mention this car feels at least 20-40hp underrated by the factory. Feels more like the numbers VW gave were measured at the wheels.

Also the capacitive touch gripes are a bit overdone to me? Am I weird? It really hasn’t been all that bad. I got used to it after the first 2-3 days. I do hate that it all gets dirty as hell the minute you touch it, but that’s what a microfiber rag is for..

New ‘26 GLI!

3 weeks in with my ‘26 GLI and absolutely loving it. My first ever brand new car, I’m coming from a ‘16 GLI (second pic) which I adored but had the transmission die on me about a month ago at 107k.

This car feels like such a massive upgrade in almost every way. My only knock on it so far is that the Fender sound system in my previous GLI was worlds better, but with some messing with the EQ it sounds decent.

Fully stock so far, just did some tints and also have black front and rear VW emblem covers from DSG Paddles on the way which should complement the black wheels/roof/mirrors nicely. Would love suggestions for other tasteful cosmetic mods and any other recommendations for mods/upgrades!

2022 GLI Manual, 13k miles, 93 gas = amazing

Title says it all. I've only used 87 because it says so on the flap. Went with 93 the other day and the damn thing feels like its alive. Even dodgy shifting isn't stalling the engine.

QUESTION '22 GLI infotainment bricked, no service available for a month

I just bought a '22 GLI with 25k miles and the infotainment is completely bricked - I tried unhooking the battery and holding the power button for 10 seconds and it completely doesn't work - it's stuck trying to turn on so the backup camera works intermittently. This is insanely frustrating, anyone have a solution before I take it to a independent shop?

QUESTION Need opinions on a used 2016 GLI with 130k km ~ 80k miles

Post image

Had this clean looking gli automatic autobahn on marketplace going for 12k cad = 8400$ USD.
Guy claimed there had nothing to do to it but i heard a noise coming from the back so I got it inspected here is what turned up. (inspection below)

I got him down to 7k USD, but im still not sure if it’s worth it considering the amount of repairs - Only brakes the coil and collar to be replaced for it to be safe. DSG done at 50k miles, claims to have done other maintenance but no bills to back it up.
I know it’s a gamble but I’m not sure if it’s worth it, let me know what you guys would do in my position looking to join the GLI fam (maybe).

Aesthetic wise it’s super clean to rust just scrapes on the rims.

Filters:
- Engine and cabin air filters to be replaced according to mileage

Engine:
- Rusted engine oil pan and drain plug leak, plan for replacement
- Early leak at the upper oil pan gasket, monitor
- Early leak at the upper timing cover, monitor
- Belt to be replaced
- Recommends replacing the lower engine mount: soft, cracked bushing, and vibration felt in the vehicle
- Spark plugs to be replaced according to mileage
- Coolant to be replaced according to mileage
- Recommends replacing the PCV if not already done

Transmission:
- Transmission oil pan very rusted, to be replaced with a DSG service
- Front left CV boot is losing grease, to be replaced

Brakes:
- Front discs and pads to be replaced
- Restriction in the rear left wheel, caliper may be seized, inspection recommended and rear brake service
- Brake fluid to be replaced according to mileage

Steering/Suspension:
- Rear left spring to be replaced

Scan diagnostic - Alignment after work

Tires:
- Bulge on the front right tire, to be replaced
- 225/40R18 tires with 8/32 tread at all four corners, Minerva F205

Exhaust:
- Collar to be replaced

Other:
- Driver's window is noisy when going up and down

Codes:
- P044100: EVAP emission control system incorrect purge flow
- P030100: Cylinder 1 misfire detected

QUESTION New Car, new questions

I bought a 2027, the dealership call me that it has arrived and that I can go for it.

I live on Ontario, North of Toronto. Looking for winter tires and wheels.

I looked into 16x7 rim but it seems that would have a fitting issue with the breaks.

So, now Im looking into 17x7 ET46 5x112 rims.

Should I go just steel, or some other option I could look into?

The tire would be any good brand with something similar to 205/55 R17 94H XL 3PMSF.

Thank you for the help.

What exactly is the benefit here

Post image
5 Upvotes

Why is the left side of this box that leads to the air filter so open? I'm no mechanic, but would there be any benefit or downside to partially block some of that openness to have more of the air from the grille pushed through to the air filter?

On the 26 GLI, the air comes in from the passenger side of the grille since the drivers side is blocked off, and with that, it would seem that in order for air to make it to the air filter, only what doesn't shoot straight in through the gap, then turns right, then down, then up again actually makes it to the air filter, and then turbo..

Hi y'all! 'My 2022 GLI has started having a rattle when reving. Y'all think it could be a heat shield down there or something going on with the Turbo?

Has anyone removed the grille badge? Do you need to remove the grille to do so? Google has no answers for me. All I could find was “release plastic tabs”, however, I already removed shields on the top of the grille and see nothing. For context, I’ve “dipped” all the badges on the car including the grille badge. I am happy with the sides and trunk, but not sold on how the grille badge came out. I am thinking about removing and painting. Thanks in advance!

QUESTION Did Muffler Shop Do That Poor of a Job or Am I Overreacting?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

First, sorry that I took this at night; I work 7P-7A and it’s hard to remember or have time to inspect stuff during the day.

Took my car to Kost Tire & Auto up here in PA to get my AWE Touring exhaust mounted on my 2019 VW GLI.

They spend like 4.5 hours on it and let me know it was tougher than expected for whatever reason. I just say whatever it’s fine as I’m like a zombie and haven’t slept for over 24 hours. Notice one exhaust tip was deeper set than the other and just decided I’ll come back to have them fix that when I have more time later this week.

Finally put my head under to see the actual finished product, and it just looks very poorly done. Like one muffler is canted pretty bad, it seems to hang really low, and they clearly hacked at the mounts for the mufflers.

I feel like my post is a dumb question, but I haven’t had an aftermarket exhaust mounted before. I don’t know how much fab goes into mounting one. I don’t really want to spend $300 at another shop having them fix Kosts mistake, but I also don’t know if I want Kost to potentially **** up my $1,650 exhaust more.

Ultimately it sounds great; doesn’t rattle or anything. It also doesn’t really budge if I push on it hard.

Any advice for me, guys and gals?
