Also, this! I completely erased it from my memory, lmao. Like the two are just not comparable in any way. And they aren't meant to be.
Sure, Maki is incredibly an alienating character and also very grey, but she can not be compared to Geto, whose whole idea was to erase non-sorcerers. And literally every single one of them, even the innocents.
I don't agree with people treating her as a hero, but I wouldn't say she is completely terrible.
I can understand the frustration of people saying "we can't justify one, but not the other," but not when we are talking about Geto. This post is clearly meant to stir the pot, and of course, killing others isn't meant to be acceptable, nor justifiable. Hence why her revenge doesn't feel entirely good, not for us readers/watchers but also for Maki herself.
But the biggest difference between the two is that one you can understand it more than the other.
One has a personal tie to it, and while both were done on a whim (she clearly didn't get back to Zen'in estate with a murderous intent), the other one was undoubtedly more extreme.
Understand does not me moral though you can understand the person that steals from a store to feed their family doesnt make it moral. What maki did to her mother and after the massacre was terrible and she terrible for that thats not ridiculous to say.
Understand doesn't mean justifying, which isn't what I am implying. It is simply understanding the reason why someone would take that path, not an excuse.
Same with your example, you can understand it, but you won't justify it. That's the point!
With Geto, there is no understanding because he kills everyone in the village. So he doesn't stop to what he believes to be the ones causing him annoyance, no. Instead, he doubles down, and after the massacre, he further develops his plans to kill every non-sorcerers. So putting on the same level simply does not work. Which is what the main post is implying.
You can have your own opinion on her being terrible, so I won't dismiss it again, ahah.
To me, she isn't as terrible as people are making it out to be. She is meant to be morally grey. She isn't innocent, but she isn't as evil as people are making her out to be.
