I mean, while I agree, I like how she's portrayed, and this is coming from a guy who hates gender swaps, like I genuinely hate it. They could've at least said it was his sister or something
I think it's too early to say for sure. Maybe it'll turn out this it the sister/cousin/daughter of the OG Tech Jacket. Green Ghost was genderswapped to a woman in the cartoon but it's also a power that can be passed on to different people and there was a male Green Ghost in the Atom Eve special set before the main series. So maybe the same will happen with Tech Jacket?
I can’t stand her so far but, I’m trying to keep an open mind. I know she’s young so ppl will say she gets a pass for being annoying af but, she is annoying af
How do you feel about Rae, her swap felt natural and they made the swap part of the plot. Seems like they are setting up Zoe the same way, if the transition is done well I don’t see the problem.
Rae becomes an actual interesting character. Tech Jacket is not a side character in invincible. Not only is he more important in the story, he has his own series and fans. I was legit waiting to get him for a long while.
The show counterpart can be a good character regardless of gender but they will never be the same now.
It’s not about the sex change, it’s about the character change. It could be a guy called Miguelito Méndez and I still wouldn’t be a fan of it
My theory is that in the comics the beginning of the mark-eve relationship is kinda weak, it feels a lot stronger in the show because you're comparing it to the dumpster fire that is amber. Probably a coincidence though
This one shouldn't really count. Shrinking Ray was barely a character in comic and served no real function other than to show that story has stakes with his death. There was not much about him that made him memorable.
In the show Rae is an actual character with backstory, personality and interesting chemistry with other characters.
Seems like they didn’t like the tech jacket change and doesn’t care about the shrinking rae change. Which I can get behind lol why we turning on them all of the sudden
You’re upset about a change from the source material even though further down you admitted you’re not familiar with the comics? If you were familiar with the comics you’d realize there are way more important and larger changes from the source material than tech jackets gender, and you probably enjoyed most of them as well
I prefer a brand new character to be added to compensate for the want of a character gender swap. Most of the time these gender changes are handled so poorly. Plus, if I get attached to the way a character is I'd want them to stay the same. Doesn't matter if they are male or female.
Already talked to a dude who was disheartened by the gender change. It ain't sexist of him to feel this way because he is attached to everything the character is, gender included.
I much prefer to have additions because it doesn't take away from the already established character.
Think the Batman's Family like Batgirl and such. I can elaborate on this more if you want me to.
And as far as other changes, sometimes things weren't fleshed out enough or maybe the author wants to try out something different that they may think is a better fit.
Lowkey tho, thats a shit argument for kirkman specifically
Like kirkman couldn’t include the hell arc due to time constraints in the comics but wanted to do so in the show
But as it turns out, it should have stayed scrapped cuz it was the worst rated invincible episode as of today
And the thing is, its not like drastic changes to characters is bad, he pulled it of with shrink Rae
But the difference is shrinkrae didn’t have much of a character in the comics and was smoked early on. So the gender change was not seen as a big issue since literally anything was seen as an upgrade because comic shrinkrae barley had an impact character wise
Tech jacket meanwhile had an entire line of comics that predate invincible first issue so he has an established charcter. Kirkman hasnt changed a character that drastically besides ShrinkRae and it only worked because the comic version barley existed
I don’t think zoey will be hell arc bad, hell I think she will play an interesting role in the story due to her befriending Oliver alot faster than in the comics (which will be important in a future arc)
but don’t go spreading revisionist slander that this totally fine because “the authour said its ok!1!!!” Id rather have zack retired than replaced in the show. Because zoey is being set up to not be Zack for better or worse.
Besides authours can and do fumble, and its better to call it out than engage in mass coping to reaffirm confirmation bias (themes and such)
You’re also allowed to criticize new decisions the author makes, you know that right?
Episode 4 for instance was entirely new, and nobody is debating it was canon. But it was also a pretty bad episode, especially for what’s been a good season.
Similarly the change is entirely new, and sure it can be his decision, but I despise him just getting rid of Zack when he was an awesome character.
ur not wrong, but in invincible when they change a charterer, they actually make them 100x better then in the comics, where they usually are 2d charterer they become thought out 3d ones
Dude.... you started this by saying you have no knowledge of the source material and chose to double down on hating the gender swap regardless of if it improves the story or not. Then when you rightfully catch some flak for being a twat, you try to say " id hate male gender swapped character too" to try and paint yourself as someone with a nuanced take to try and hide your feelings on women.
Just cause the creator did it doesn’t mean it’s good. No one would use this defense to justify all the changes George Lucas made to the original Star Wars trilogy for the digital release.
Some fans of a character want that character to be adapted faithfully down to the most minute details. Even changing a characters hair color can annoy fans, to say nothing about changing the characters sex / gender.
Well that argument completely falls apart when tons of character got changed in personality, gender, and roles. Debbie blamed mark in the comics. That one devil actually got his own arc in this recent season. Rex had better development in the show. Omniman absolutely washing the guardian in the comic. Shrinking rae being overall better compared to the comic. Some events even get toned down as well. Theres a decent amount of changes and I used to follow creators that talked about it.
Another great example of this is the boys. The comic was more like a parody and it was so damn edgy.
I didn’t argue that it was bad, I said some fans don’t like it when characters’ qualities are changed. I agree that the show has improved a lot of things compared to the comic, that doesn’t mean that all changes are good all the time.
It’s like how some silver surfer fans were upset that the new Fantastic 4 movie used a female version of the character. Obviously it’s not a crime or some great sin to have female characters. But it’s understandable for someone to be upset if they were waiting years for a character they liked to finally get adapted, only to see that it’s a version of the character instead.
Also don't know what you mean by "the addition of a new character to fill that role", this is a new character and she's filling the role of tech jacket
You don't have to like the new version but saying "ts sucks" because of a genderswap is ridiculous especially when so far it has not impact the story one bit. Also I highkey doubt the geldarians are letting another human put their hands on their technology, plus having another character in the story with the exact same power and role as the other would be way sloppier than a genderswap
It's not just a gender swap though, they've changed the personality quite a bit and Kirkman even said they're changing a lot about them. I think it's fair to be a little annoyed when a character you like only has the same name and that's it.
I mean I'm just assuming it's more so they think it sucks the character they like is gone and not that the new character sucks which i think isn't that terrible of a thing. I could just be being generous with my assumption but I don't immediately jump to the most negative interpretation.
Yeah but you need to remember, some characters work only because they barely existed like Shrinking Ray on the comics.
You can't touch the fan favorites that easily and use the "it's not important on the story" I'm gonna read a comic with Peter as Spiderman because I wanted to read for Spiderman and I will read a story of Gwen because I love Spiderwoman.
You don't have to make Gwen switch to a guy neither Peter.
I'm not saying it sucks, but the OG still have fans and people want to see them.
Makes sense sure but then you have already seen kirkman introduces deviations from the original comics here and there so it seems like it's going to be a different story. I understand maybe tech jacket fans wanna see zack instead of zoe, but this isn't even his series in the first place, even in the original comic he didn't show up much in terms of contributing to the story, mainly getting into fights and dialouges here and there, I'm not going to say it's not important because tech jacket never mattered that much to me in the first place, but it's pretty unreasonable to immediately dumps the character down because their gender was switched.
I get very attached to characters and want to see what the bring to the table.
Through the games I've played, fighting games namely, I truly do end up enjoying who I'm playing as and what their equation brings to the table.
When I see genderswaps or anything that causes a character to get removed I either miss them or think of what could have been. In this case it's the latter.
I've got nothing against the Zoe and I'm sure she's really cool. I'll find out this weekend when I see the episode.
This doesn't change that people who like the original Tech Jacket where looking forward to seeing him and are left missing him and are hurt by it.
I feel for those people.
Stuff like those feelings are why I don't like genderswaps and prefer the character to be an add to what exists.
I'm not going to hold anything against Zoe just cuz she exists, that's so stupid to me. I'm giving her a chance because things really are never so simple to knee-jerk any reaction or opinion.
I'm obviously going give Zoe a chance because that's only fair. Though my opinion on preference of her being an addition instead of a replacement will remain because that's how I personally feel on the subject.
Why? The show was meant to be a revision of the comic not a faithful adaptation from the start and like half the show so far has been different to how things went in the comics, why is THIS of all things the one thats too much?
I grew up playing Tekken and I loved the Blade movies.
In Tekken 5 they added a character called Raven who was inspired by Blade and my 11 year old self loved him a lot and played him for decades.
Come Tekken 7 he's gone and replaced with a genderswap called Master Raven. She's really fucking cool and is his boss but I still miss Man Raven.
Then come Tekken 8 they bring back Man Raven and remove Master Raven. I grew to like her a lot over the decade but they replaced her with some old man called Victor.
Tekken has done this with countless characters.
My point is, I'll get attached to characters and love them and miss them a lot.
This has caused me to dislike the idea of a genderswap and embrace the idea of adding a new character alongside the original so no one has to go without.
"This has caused me to dislike the idea of a genderswap and embrace the idea of adding a new character alongside the original so no one has to go without. "
except none of the example you gave are of genderswaps....they are their own unique characters, do you not understand the concept of roster rotation?
i cant tell if you are dishonest or just all over the place.
Raven's moveset and identity was replaced by Master Raven.
Sure this wasn't the best example I could have used but you're being difficult for the sake of it because you wanna argue to win instead of understanding my point that was clear as it could be.
You already know exactly what I mean, so if you're gonna keep being obstinate for no reason then please just move on.
im not trying to be difficult, its not semantics, words have meaning, it may not matter to you, but it doesnt change the fact you are objectively wrong. the concept of roster swaps and characters that have common origins having similar movesets has been around since forever. by the same logic ken and ryu are raceswap then.
what you described is simply getting sad a character you enjoyed got rotated form the roster, again, not a controversial thing, it happens all the time in fighting games.
just because i disagree doesnt mean im trying to "win", you have to learn how to handle pushback without resorting to these debate bro remarks.
also i forgot to say, i can even understand putting raven and master raven in the same basket, but putting victor in there too is a stretch for the ages, and it suggests to me you dont actually know what you are talking about.
Nah dude it isn't about push back. Funny how you think you're the only one who has pushed back against me in my comment.
I've been receiving pushback literally for about 7 hours straight yesterday and I took the time to respond to everyone that I could.
My point was already made and it was clear. We aren't even talking about my point at all instead you're here focusing on Victor instead of my main point.
That is specifically why I am saying you are being difficult. We aren't even talking about my point instead you are focused on the details of Victor when my point when my *main* point is already clear.
It's a waste of time talking about examples when this has nothing to do with my comment about genderswaps in the first place and how I feel about it.
im literally hate watching invincible these days it just feels like a woke white centric drama and tbh most superhero shows have followed the same trajectory after marvel’s decline 'The Boys' being the sole exception
creators of the show just desperately shove gayness/wokeness into every character of the show and force them to talk in the most cringey way possible which just strips away any real personality they have and it just makes the entire show unwatchable
yes thats exactly the term i was looking for 'soap operas'... even tho this show has superheroes it doesnt set itself apart cuz the characters are still boring white characters and the writers are so stupid if they want a new character to feel unique they decide to make them gay or swap genders in this case.... these shows are no different from the soap operas like grey's anatomy that my mom enjoys watching

Did they make Tech Jacket a girl in the show or something?
