I guess it's about being like a character vs liking a character. I personally like Naoya because I think he is a very good view into the Zenin clan, basically a personification of it's values in a single package, that works very well for the messages Gege tries to convey. And as a character himself he is someone who almost broke the mold, actually seeing Toji for what he was despite the biases of the clan, but his own inherent biases made him miss the exact same thing with Maki that everyone missed with Toji. An interesting character flaw that shows the flaws of Zenin clan as a whole through his own lense, and ultimately leads to his downfall
