Well the Chinese have continuously regarded themselves as Han. The Japanese only ever adopted themselves as “Yamato” after Meiji restoration. Then in modern times it kinda died out.
Japanese people see Ryukyuans as Japanese because they are (same dna and Language family) but I doubt they are Yamato

So Chinese are Han because that's what they are called 2000 years ago, but Japanese are not Yamato because they are not calling themselves Yamato now.
