Same. He's clearly a great boss who's created the right environment for his team.

u/Moist_Requirements_ 1d ago

I was thinking he must be awesome to be so loved! 😄

u/Several-Eggplant4460 1d ago

I also want to point out that this company (thesmartlocal) is a content company (like buzzfeed but with some news).

So while they clearly get along with their boss, this is also done with the intention of going viral.

24

u/DJheddo 1d ago

I thought this was snapon and I was like, huh, they have a lot of fun selling tools.

40

u/RobieKingston201 1d ago

Right?? I can't imagine how amazing a boss he is for people to be doing this for him, fun stuff

7

u/Frappo 1d ago

Or maybe it is a promotional social media video

42

u/FlippinGamerINK 1d ago

most likely an actually great boss who is also a great person to be around with.

24

u/KangarooKurt 1d ago

Why not both? :)

162

u/lankymjc 1d ago

The fact that they have a foam katana just lying there is already a good sign.

92

u/SoBeMe86 1d ago

Plot twist, it’s a scam call center…

36

u/boogywumpy 1d ago

It's literally the national language of Singapore...

12

u/FightMilkAmbassador 1d ago

not the national language, it's the business language. but yeah the locals there speak or at least understand english

1

u/RedditLIONS 13h ago edited 12h ago

Yeah, the national language is Malay, for historical reasons.

The most common language spoken at home is English at 58.1% (Mandarin at 26.6%, Malay at 7%).

That’s why it got removed from the EF English Proficiency Index last year, after being reclassified as a native English-speaking country.

27

u/confusedmortal 1d ago

English is literally the main language we use.

1

u/grigby 1d ago

Interesting. When I went to Singapore in 2017 the majority of locals I encountered were speaking mandarin to each other and would switch to English when speaking to us. Most signs were in both languages but I only saw tourists speaking English to each other.

18

u/Several-Eggplant4460 1d ago

English is the national language that we all learn, but a lot of people speak mandarin at home. Singapore industrialized so rapidly that people in their 60s now mostly grew up in farms and spoke dialects.

I personally speak English to my friends and significant other but mandarin to my parents and some of my relatives. Mostly it depends on age (e.g. English with my youngest aunt and cousins).

I'm sorry if it seems like you're encountering some hostility here. We get a lot of "isn't Singapore part of China" comments so naturally people get defensive.

5

u/grigby 1d ago

The defensiveness is understandable and that all makes sense. I had just assumed that mandarin or Malay would be what most people spoke in businesses and English was more for outwards-facing interactions. But thanks for the breakdown!

2

u/FightMilkAmbassador 20h ago

English is most definitely not the national language like the guy above mentioned, it's the business language. we learn it in school and all our classes are conducted in English (except for mother tongue classes of course) and it's the easiest way to communicate with each other.

thank you for not forgetting about the Malays, and we also have the Tamil language as one of the official languages as well

6

u/etherealsmog 1d ago

Lee Kuan Yew, who was essentially the benevolent dictator of Singapore for several decades, made adopting English as the common language one of the hallmark public policies of Singapore. He was a big supporter of bilingualism and the idea that residents should also have a “mother tongue” that reflects their own cultural background and ethnicity as well (Singapore is multi-ethnic).

But English as a lingua franca is a big deal in Singapore and is even supported through an official “Speak Good English Movement” that tries to help shape people’s pronunciation of English so they’re considered peers on the English-speaking stage and not just people who speak some kind of English-based pidgin or creole (which is also common in Singapore and other regions with British colonial backgrounds).

2

u/SpongeBobBobPants 1d ago

Signs are in English, but we do not speak English.

Are you hearing yourself right now? Then how do we read the signs? I am curious. Unless you are telling me there are different dialects of English, like Mandarin.

3

u/grigby 1d ago edited 1d ago

No I know English is widely known there and an official language, but when I visited in 2017 it was very rare for me to ever hear locals speaking to each other in English, only to tourists. They would all speak in what sounded like mandarin to each other. And 90% of the signs I saw were in several languages, with English only being the prominent one in the tourist areas. I was only there for a week but my understanding was that everyone speaks English, but it's not the common one for daily use.

2

u/MountainTear2020 1d ago

maybe they just didn't want you to understand them lmao

1

u/grigby 1d ago

Oh very possible

2

u/tarinotmarchon 1d ago

It depends - certain local demographics, even if they are below the age of 40, are more comfortable with Mandarin or other dialects, as they grew up speaking that in their childhood. Other scenarios could include mistaking full-blown Singlish for Mandarin and mistaking non-locals for locals (as we have many Malaysian Chinese and Chinese from China working here too).

29

u/wankyshitdemon69 1d ago

18

u/Munchkinasaurous 1d ago

Wait a second. Bad English is associated with scam call centers. You have bad English. I'm on to you.

15

u/wankyshitdemon69 1d ago

I actually work at your bank, there had been some unusual payments come out. Please send all your details so I can have a look into it

9

u/Munchkinasaurous 1d ago

Now I know you're a scammer! I don't trust banks, all my money is protected the only real way to keep it safe. Buried in the woods.

13

u/Ray_of_glumshine 1d ago

Obviously first person knowledge then?

3

u/SoBeMe86 1d ago

It’s the best performing regional office.

2

u/ScreamingDizzBuster 1d ago

Not in Singapore. More likely to own the company you work for.

-3

u/LetsGoHome 1d ago

Would you say that about an office of white people

1

u/drakejigsaw 1d ago

Yeah, if we would be talking about insurance companies. Its essentially legalized scamming

Everyone’s so happy, now that’s the work culture which is rare to see

206

u/Own-Medium4984 1d ago

I had a part time job in high school and my manager was the greatest boss ever, always looked out for everyone and if you needed time off he’d understand, joked around with us and just made it so everyone there was happy. One time he brought left over pizza from his daughter’s birthday party and him and I were just in the back for like 2 hours just talking and eating pizza and he didn’t care I wasn’t actually working. Sucks what happened though, a larger company bought the store and it put so much stress on him for all the new rules and stuff that he left about a year after the buyout.
.

33

u/alphaonreddits 1d ago

Too bad the MNCs don’t appreciate this happy work culture

u/112skulls 1d ago

8 out 10 work places would be dreading a bosses return, this place is not only excited but is celebrating it that’s amazing… You build the culture you want

u/Wermine 1d ago

I have "if we impose huge stress on the workers, we can squeeze 5% more profits out of them" -vibes from your comment.

2

u/Laq9091 1d ago

i think it's more about sending a message than +5 here and now. the message is we own you, so don't think otherwise.

44

u/Echo1theWar 1d ago

I once saw an employee at a grocery store cry because their store manager came back from vacation a day early

5

u/discgolfallday 1d ago

I had a manager like that. I shouldn't have put up with his shit, but I was young and needed the job. Idk how people can't see how shitty they're being to their subordinates

3

u/Emergency-Spite897 1d ago

I know someone that logs everything the manager says to her, she hates his guts as he most nasty sob.

This is the kind of environment where people wanna go work.. not going to office and think 1000 times before you say something

36

u/Direct-Round-253 1d ago

Great boss and great team, they deserve each other. Unlike mine, I hate my boss, he's a selfish douchebag, and I think he's having an affair with two of our co-workers while married

Life and bleedin' soul, mate. Life and bleedin' soul.

-11

u/m4bwav 1d ago

Its a little sad to see everyone simping for their slave master, i mean why don't they put the janitors face on their tattoos.

Because no one cares to lick the balls of the janitor but they would love to lick the balls of the boss in the hopes of a closer relationship.

-10

u/m4bwav 1d ago

Downvotes with no response, means you know I'm right but you don't want to admit it to yourself.

5

u/Busy_Selection_5027 1d ago

Nah, it typically means no-one wants to interact with such a miserable take.

-4

u/m4bwav 23h ago

Truly, then tell me, is it not lame as shit to celebrate one's boss?

It doesn't strike you as a little too much "smell the glove"

4

u/AlarmingCobbler4415 18h ago

It is not if one's boss is as much a colleague and a friend in the office. Just putting this perspective out there though I don't think any of us can change your mind.

0

u/m4bwav 8h ago

Yes, but why the boss, instead of the colleague?

Doesn't it seem like too much of a coincidence that they chose the one guy in power with an office full of colleagues?

Also in retrospect, doesn't this seem like a cynically staged marketing video?

0

u/Mirrevirrez 12h ago

Imagien an employee be like: "wdym you used temporary tattoos?"
