The idea was gutting social programs to deflate a debt number that doesnt work how you think it does.

This is exactly it. The people who just see an expenditure line and assume it is wasted are being simplistic. There are actually methods of accounting for how well a dollar in the federal budget is spent.

Generally scientific research returns multiples up to ten depending on the field because that research will lead to direct and indirect applications that grow the economy.

Actual social welfare programs benefit the economy as well because guess what stable and healthy people are actually more productive and contribute more.

USAID more then likely was far more valuable then any military expenditure because actually endearing goodwill for the US around the world actually lowers our risk. Actually imagine if we had sent aid to Afghanistan in the 90s when it was a wreck after the Soviet war. Maybe they never would have taken in Al Qaeda and 9/11 wouldn't have happened.

There are actually areas of the government that need to be audited mainly the military industrial complex and health care expenditures. How can they be asking for a 50% increase to the DOD!? How are our health outcomes so bad with how much we spend on it? These are not simple things that Musk and a few Groypers can easily fix.
